Ecclesiastes 7
1 A good name [is] better than precious ointment; and the day of death than the day of one's birth.
Bon renom vaut mieux que bon parfum; le jour de la mort vaut mieux que le jour de la naissance.
2 [It is] better to go to the house of mourning, than to go to the house of feasting: for that [is] the end of all men; and the living will lay [it] to his heart.
Il vaut mieux aller à la maison du deuil qu'à la maison du festin, puisque le deuil est la fin de tout homme, et que le vivant donnera ainsi de bons avertissements à son cœur.
3 Sorrow [is] better than laughter: for by the sadness of the countenance the heart is made better.
La tristesse vaut mieux que le rire; parce que, par la tristesse du visage, le cœur deviendra bon.
4 The heart of the wise [is] in the house of mourning; but the heart of fools [is] in the house of mirth.
Le cœur des sages est à la maison des pleurs; le cœur des insensés est à la maison d'allégresse.
5 [It is] better to hear the rebuke of the wise, than for a man to hear the song of fools.
Mieux vaut écouter la réprimande d'un sage, que d'entendre le chant des insensés.
6 For as the crackling of thorns under a pot, so [is] the laughter of the fool: this also [is] vanity.
Le rire des insensés est comme le pétillement des épines sous une chaudière; et cela encore est vanité.
7 Surely oppression maketh a wise man mad; and a gift destroyeth the heart.
La calomnie trouble le sage, et lui fait perdre sa force d'âme.
8 Better [is] the end of a thing than its beginning: [and] the patient in spirit [is] better than the proud in spirit.
La fin du discours vaut mieux que le commencement; un homme patient vaut mieux qu'un esprit présomptueux.
9 Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry: for anger resteth in the bosom of fools.
Ne t'abandonne pas trop vite au souffle de la colère; car la colère réside dans le sein des insensés.
10 Say not thou, What is [the cause] that the former days were better than these? for thou dost not inquire wisely concerning this.
Garde-toi de dire: Comment se fait-il que les jours d'autrefois ont été meilleurs que ceux d'à présent? Car il n'est point sage de s'enquérir de ces choses.
11 Wisdom [is] good with an inheritance: and [by it there is] profit to them that see the sun.
La sagesse est bonne, unie aux richesses; elle est alors profitable à ceux qui vivent sous le soleil.
12 For wisdom [is] a defense, [and] money [is] a defense: but the excellence of knowledge [is], [that] wisdom giveth life to them that have it.
Car on s'abrite à l'ombre de la sagesse, comme à l'ombre de l'argent; mais l'avantage de la science et de la sagesse, c'est qu'elles font vivre celui qui les possède.
13 Consider the work of God: for who can make [that] straight, which he hath made crooked?
Considère les œuvres de Dieu; car qui pourrait redresser celui que Dieu a courbé?
14 In the day of prosperity be joyful, but in the day of adversity consider: God also hath set the one over against the other, to the end that man should find nothing after him.
Au jour de la prospérité vis dans le bien-être, et prévois le jour du malheur; prévois-le: car Dieu a fait telle chose concordant avec telle autre, à cause des propos des hommes, afin qu'ils ne trouvent rien à blâmer en Lui.
15 All [things] have I seen in the days of my vanity: there is a just [man] that perisheth in his righteousness, and there is a wicked [man] that prolongeth [his life] in his wickedness.
J'ai vu toutes choses au jour de ma vanité. Le juste meurt avec sa justice; l'impie subsiste avec sa perversité.
16 Be not righteous over much; neither make thyself over wise: why shouldst thou destroy thyself?
Ne sois pas juste à l'excès; ne soit point sage plus qu'il ne faut, de peur que tu ne sois confondu.
17 Be not over much wicked, neither be thou foolish: why shouldst thou die before thy time?
Mais ne sois pas non plus impie ni obstiné à l'excès, de peur que tu ne périsses avant le temps.
18 [It is] good that thou shouldst take hold of this; yes, also from this withdraw not thy hand: for he that feareth God shall escape from them all.
Il est bon que tu t'attaches à telle chose, et que tu t'éloignes de telle autre, pour ne point souiller tes mains; car tout vient à ceux qui craignent Dieu.
19 Wisdom strengtheneth the wise more than ten mighty [men] who are in the city.
La sagesse sera utile au sage plus que dix des plus puissants de la cité.
20 For [there is] not a just man upon earth, that doeth good, and sinneth not.
Car il n'est point sur la terre de juste qui fasse le bien, et ne pèche.
21 Also take no heed to all words that are spoken; lest thou hear thy servant curse thee:
Mais ne dépose pas en ton cœur toutes les paroles que dirent les impies, de peur que tu n'entendes ton serviteur te maudire.
22 For often also thy own heart knoweth that thou thyself likewise hast cursed others.
Car maintes fois il t'irritera, et il t'affligera de bien des manières; car toi-même aussi tu as maudit les autres.
23 All this have I proved by wisdom: I said, I will be wise; but it [was] far from me.
J'ai éprouve toutes choses en ma sagesse, et j'ai dit: Je serai sage; et la sagesse s'est éloignée de moi.
24 That which is far off, and exceedingly deep, who can find it out?
Elle était plus loin encore qu'auparavant; l'abîme entre nous était profond: qui le sondera?
25 I applied my heart to know, and to search, and to seek out wisdom, and the reason [of things], and to know the wickedness of folly, even of foolishness [and] madness:
Pour moi, j'ai tourné autour de toutes choses, et j'ai appliqué mon esprit à les apprendre, à les examiner avec soin, à chercher la sagesse et la raison des choses, à connaître la démence de l'impie, et ses agitations et son inquiétude.
26 And I find more bitter than death the woman whose heart [is] snares and nets, [and] her hands [as] bands: whoever pleaseth God shall escape from her; but the sinner shall be taken by her.
Et j'ai trouve cette démence, et je la dis plus amère que la mort; de même est la femme que le veneur poursuit comme une proie, tandis que son cœur est un filet, et qu'elle tient des chaînes en sa main. L'homme bon en face du Seigneur fuira loin d'elle, et le pécheur y sera pris.
27 Behold, this have I found, saith the preacher, [counting] one by one, to find out the account:
Voilà ce que j'ai trouvé, dit l'Ecclésiaste, en prenant les choses une à une, pour en découvrir la raison.
28 Which yet my soul seeketh, but I find not: one man among a thousand have I found; but a woman among all those have I not found.
Mon âme l'a cherchée cette raison, et je ne l'ai point trouvée, et j'ai trouvé un homme sur mille; mais parmi toutes les femmes, je n'en ai pas trouvé une seule.
29 Lo, this only have I found, that God hath made man upright; but they have sought out many inventions.
Seulement voici ce que j'ai trouvé: Dieu a créé l'homme droit, et les hommes ont cherché une multitude de raisons.
