Ecclesiastes 10
1 Dead flies cause the ointment of the apothecary to send forth an offensive odor: [so doth] a little folly him that is in reputation for wisdom [and] honor.
Assim como a mosca morta faz exalar mau cheiro e evaporar o unguênto do perfumador, assim o faz ao famoso em sabedoria e em honra uma pouca de estultícia.
2 A wise man's heart [is] at his right hand; but a fool's heart [is] at his left.
O coração do sábio está à sua dextra, mas o coração do tolo está à sua esquerda.
3 Also, when he that is a fool walketh by the way, his wisdom faileth [him], and he saith to every one [that] he [is] a fool.
E, até quando o tolo vai pelo caminho, falta-lhe o seu entendimento e diz a todos que é tolo.
4 If the spirit of the ruler riseth against thee, leave not thy place; for yielding pacifieth great offenses.
Levantando-se contra ti o espírito do governador, não deixes o teu lugar, porque é um remédio que aquieta grandes pecados.
5 There is an evil [which] I have seen under the sun, as an error [which] proceedeth from the ruler:
Ainda há um mal que vi debaixo do sol, como o erro que procede de diante do governador.
6 Folly is set in great dignity, and the rich sit in low place.
Ao tolo assentam em grandes alturas, mas os ricos estão assentados na baixeza.
7 I have seen servants upon horses, and princes walking as servants upon the earth.
Vi os servos a cavalo, e os príncipes que andavam a pé como servos sobre a terra.
8 He that diggeth a pit shall fall into it; and whoever breaketh a hedge, a serpent shall bite him.
Quem cavar uma cova, cairá nela, e, quem romper um muro, uma cobra o morderá.
9 Whoever removeth stones shall be hurt by them; [and] he that cleaveth wood shall be endangered by it.
Quem acarretar pedras, será maltratado por elas, e o que rachar lenha perigará com ela.
10 If the iron is blunt, and he doth not whet the edge, then must he use more strength: but wisdom [is] profitable to direct.
Se estiver embotado o ferro, e não se amolar o corte, então se devem pôr mais forças: mas a sabedoria é excelente para dirigir.
11 Surely the serpent will bite without enchantment; and a babbler is no better.
Se a cobra morder, não estando encantada, então remédio nenhum se espera do encantador, por mais hábil que seja.
12 The words of a wise man's mouth [are] gracious; but the lips of a fool will swallow up himself.
Nas palavras da boca do sábio há favor, porém os lábios do tolo o devoram.
13 The beginning of the words of his mouth [is] foolishness: and the end of his talk [is] mischievous madness.
O princípio das palavras da sua boca é a estultícia, e o fim da sua boca um desváiro péssimo.
14 A fool also is full of words: a man cannot tell what shall be; and what shall be after him, who can tell him?
Bem que o tolo multiplique as palavras, não sabe o homem o que há de ser; e quem lhe fará saber o que será depois dele?
15 The labor of the foolish wearieth every one of them, because he knoweth not how to go to the city.
O trabalho dos tolos a cada um deles fatiga, porque não sabem ir à cidade.
16 Woe to thee, O land, when thy king [is] a child, and thy princes eat in the morning!
Ai de ti, ó terra, cujo rei é criança, e cujos príncipes comem de manhã.
17 Blessed [art] thou, O land, when thy king [is] the son of nobles, and thy princes eat in due season, for strength, and not for drunkenness!
Benaventurada tu, ó terra, cujo rei é filho dos nobres, e cujos príncipes comem a tempo, para refazerem as forças, e não para bebedice.
18 By much slothfulness the building decayeth; and through idleness of the hands the house droppeth through.
Pela muita preguiça se enfraquece o teto, e pela frouxidão das mãos goteja a casa.
19 A feast is made for laughter, and wine maketh merry: but money answereth all [things].
Para rir se fazem convites, e o vinho alegra a vida, e por tudo o dinheiro responde.
20 Curse not the king, no not in thy thought; and curse not the rich in thy bed-chamber: for a bird of the air will carry the voice, and that which hath wings will tell the matter.
Nem ainda no teu pensamento amaldiçoes ao rei, nem tão pouco no mais interior da tua recâmara amaldiçoes ao rico: porque as aves dos céus levariam a voz, e os que tem asas dariam notícia da palavra.
