Ecclesiastes 10
1 Dead flies cause the ointment of the apothecary to send forth an offensive odor: [so doth] a little folly him that is in reputation for wisdom [and] honor.
Giftige Fliegen machen das Öl des Salbenbereiters stinkend und faulend; ein wenig Torheit kommt teurer zu stehen als Weisheit und Ehre!
2 A wise man's heart [is] at his right hand; but a fool's heart [is] at his left.
Der Weise trägt sein Herz auf dem rechten Fleck, der Narr hat es am unrechten Ort;
3 Also, when he that is a fool walketh by the way, his wisdom faileth [him], and he saith to every one [that] he [is] a fool.
auf welchem Wege der Narr auch gehen mag, es fehlt ihm überall an Verstand, und er sagt jedermann, daß er ein Tor sei.
4 If the spirit of the ruler riseth against thee, leave not thy place; for yielding pacifieth great offenses.
Wenn der Zorn des Herrschers gegen dich entbrennt, so verlaße deinen Posten nicht; denn Gelassenheit verhütet große Sünden.
5 There is an evil [which] I have seen under the sun, as an error [which] proceedeth from the ruler:
Es gibt ein Übel, das ich unter der Sonne sah, wie ein Mißgriff, von einem Machthaber getan:
6 Folly is set in great dignity, and the rich sit in low place.
Die Torheit ward auf große Höhen gestellt, und Reiche mußten unten bleiben;
7 I have seen servants upon horses, and princes walking as servants upon the earth.
ich sah Knechte auf Pferden, und Fürsten gingen wie Knechte zu Fuß.
8 He that diggeth a pit shall fall into it; and whoever breaketh a hedge, a serpent shall bite him.
Wer eine Grube gräbt, fällt hinein; und wer eine Mauer einreißt, den wird eine Schlange beißen.
9 Whoever removeth stones shall be hurt by them; [and] he that cleaveth wood shall be endangered by it.
Wer Steine bricht, verwundet sich daran, und wer Holz spaltet, bringt sich in Gefahr.
10 If the iron is blunt, and he doth not whet the edge, then must he use more strength: but wisdom [is] profitable to direct.
Wenn ein Eisen stumpf ist und ungeschliffen bleibt, so muß man um so mehr Kraft anwenden; aber durch Weisheit kommt man zum Gelingen.
11 Surely the serpent will bite without enchantment; and a babbler is no better.
Wenn die Schlange beißt, weil man sie nicht beschworen hat, so hat der Beschwörer keinen Nutzen von seiner Kunst.
12 The words of a wise man's mouth [are] gracious; but the lips of a fool will swallow up himself.
Die Reden eines Weisen sind anmutig; aber die Lippen des Toren verschlingen ihn selbst.
13 The beginning of the words of his mouth [is] foolishness: and the end of his talk [is] mischievous madness.
Der Anfang seiner Worte ist Dummheit und das Ende seiner Rede die schlimmste Tollheit.
14 A fool also is full of words: a man cannot tell what shall be; and what shall be after him, who can tell him?
Auch macht der Tor viele Worte, obgleich kein Mensch weiß, was geschehen ist; und was nach ihm sein wird, wer kann es ihm sagen?
15 The labor of the foolish wearieth every one of them, because he knoweth not how to go to the city.
Die Mühe, die der Tor sich gibt, der den Weg zur Stadt nicht kennt, ermüdet ihn.
16 Woe to thee, O land, when thy king [is] a child, and thy princes eat in the morning!
Wehe dir, Land, dessen König ein Knabe ist und dessen Fürsten schon am Morgen schmausen!
17 Blessed [art] thou, O land, when thy king [is] the son of nobles, and thy princes eat in due season, for strength, and not for drunkenness!
Heil dir, du Land, dessen König ein Sohn der Edlen ist und dessen Fürsten zu rechter Zeit essen, zur Stärkung, und nicht aus Genußsucht.
18 By much slothfulness the building decayeth; and through idleness of the hands the house droppeth through.
Durch Faulheit verfault das Gebälk, und wegen Nachlässigkeit der Hände rinnt das Dach.
19 A feast is made for laughter, and wine maketh merry: but money answereth all [things].
Zum Vergnügen backt man Brot, und der Wein erfreut die Lebendigen, und das Geld gewährt alles.
20 Curse not the king, no not in thy thought; and curse not the rich in thy bed-chamber: for a bird of the air will carry the voice, and that which hath wings will tell the matter.
Fluche dem König nicht einmal in deinen Gedanken, und verwünsche den Reichen auch in deiner Schlafkammer nicht; denn die Vögel des Himmels tragen den Laut davon, und ein geflügelter Bote verkündigt das Wort.
