Deuteronomy 28

1 And it shall come to pass, if thou shalt hearken diligently to the voice of the LORD thy God, to observe [and] to do all his commandments which I command thee this day; that the LORD thy God will set thee on high above all nations of the earth:

"Or, si tu obéis à la voix de l’Éternel, ton Dieu, observant avec soin tous ses préceptes, que je t’impose en ce jour, l’Éternel, ton Dieu, te fera devenir le premier de tous les peuples de la terre;

2 And all these blessings shall come on thee, and overtake thee, if thou shalt hearken to the voice of the LORD thy God.

et toutes les bénédictions suivantes se réaliseront pour toi et resteront ton partage, tant que tu obéiras à la voix de l’Éternel, ton Dieu:

3 Blessed [shalt] thou [be] in the city, and blessed [shalt] thou [be] in the field.

tu seras béni dans la ville, et béni dans les champs.

4 Blessed [shall be] the fruit of thy body, and the fruit of thy ground, and the fruit of thy cattle, the increase of thy cattle, and the flocks of thy sheep.

Béni sera le fruit de tes entrailles, et le fruit de ton sol, et celui de ton bétail: la progéniture de tes taureaux, la portée de tes brebis.

5 Blessed [shall be] thy basket and thy store.

Bénies seront ta corbeille et ta huche.

6 Blessed [shalt] thou [be] when thou comest in, and blessed [shalt] thou [be] when thou goest out.

Béni seras-tu à ton arrivée, et béni encore à ton départ!

7 The LORD shall cause thy enemies that rise up against thee to be smitten before thy face: they shall come out against thee one way, and flee before thee seven ways.

L’Éternel fera succomber devant toi les ennemis qui te menaceraient: s’ils marchent contre toi par un chemin, ils fuiront devant toi par sept.

8 The LORD shall command the blessing upon thee in thy store-houses, and in all that thou settest thy hand to: and he shall bless thee in the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.

L’Éternel fixera chez toi la bénédiction, dans tes celliers, dans tous tes biens; il te rendra heureux dans ce pays que l’Éternel, ton Dieu, te destine.

9 The LORD shall establish thee a holy people to himself, as he hath sworn to thee, if thou shalt keep the commandments of the LORD thy God, and walk in his ways.

L’Éternel te maintiendra comme sa nation sainte, ainsi qu’il te l’a juré, tant que tu garderas les commandements de l’Éternel, ton Dieu, et que tu marcheras dans ses voies.

10 And all the people of the earth shall see that thou art called by the name of the LORD; and they shall be afraid of thee.

Et tous les peuples de la terre verront que le nom de l’Éternel est associé au tien, et ils te redouteront.

11 And the LORD shall make thee to abound in goods, in the fruit of thy body, and in the fruit of thy cattle, and in the fruit of thy ground, in the land which the LORD swore to thy fathers to give thee.

Et l’Éternel te rendra supérieur à tous en félicité, par le fruit de tes entrailles, celui de ton bétail et celui de ton sol, sur la terre qu’il a juré à tes aïeux de te donner.

12 The LORD shall open to thee his good treasure, the heaven to give rain to thy land in its season, and to bless all the work of thy hand: and thou shalt lend to many nations, and thou shalt not borrow.

L’Éternel ouvrira pour toi son bienfaisant trésor, le ciel, pour dispenser à ton sol des pluies opportunes et faire prospérer tout le labeur de ta main; et tu pourras prêter à maintes nations, mais tu n’emprunteras point.

13 And the LORD shall make thee the head, and not the tail; and thou shalt be above only, and thou shalt not be beneath; if thou shalt hearken to the commandments of the LORD thy God, which I command thee this day, to observe and to do [them]:

L’Éternel te fera tenir le premier rang, et non point le dernier; tu seras constamment au faîte, sans jamais déchoir, pourvu que tu obéisses aux lois de l’Éternel, ton Dieu, que je t’impose en ce jour, en les exécutant ponctuellement,

14 And thou shalt not go aside from any of the words which I command thee this day, [to] the right hand or [to] the left, to go after other gods to serve them.

et que tu ne dévies pas, à droite ni à gauche, de tout ce que je vous ordonne aujourd’hui, pour suivre et adorer des divinités étrangères.

15 But it shall come to pass, if thou wilt not hearken to the voice of the LORD thy God, to observe to do all his commandments and his statutes which I command thee this day; that all these curses shall come upon thee, and overtake thee:

Mais si tu n’écoutes pas la voix de l’Éternel, ton Dieu: si tu n’as pas soin d’observer tous ses préceptes et ses lois que je te recommande en ce jour, toutes ces malédictions se réaliseront contre toi et seront ton partage:

16 Cursed [shalt] thou [be] in the city, and cursed [shalt] thou [be] in the field.

tu seras maudit dans la ville, et maudit dans les champs.

17 Cursed [shall be] thy basket and thy store.

Maudites seront ta corbeille et ta huche.

18 Cursed [shall be] the fruit of thy body, and the fruit of thy land, the increase of thy kine, and the flocks of thy sheep.

Maudits seront le fruit de tes entrailles et le fruit de ton sol, la progéniture de tes taureaux et les portées de tes brebis.

19 Cursed [shalt] thou [be] when thou comest in, and cursed [shalt] thou [be] when thou goest out.

Maudit seras-tu à ton arrivée, et maudit encore à ton départ!

20 The LORD shall send upon thee cursing, vexation, and rebuke, in all that thou undertakest to perform, until thou shalt be destroyed, and until thou shalt perish quickly; because of the wickedness of thy doings by which thou hast forsaken me.

L’Éternel suscitera chez toi le malheur, le désordre et la ruine, dans toute opération où tu mettras la main; tellement que tu seras bientôt anéanti et perdu, pour prix de tes méfaits, pour avoir renoncé à moi.

21 The LORD shall make the pestilence cleave to thee, until he shall have consumed thee from off the land, whither thou goest to possess it.

L’Éternel attachera à tes flancs la peste, jusqu’à ce qu’elle t’ait consumé de dessus la terre où tu vas entrer pour en prendre possession.

22 The LORD shall smite thee with a consumption, and with a fever, and with an inflammation, and with an extreme burning, and with the sword, and with blasting, and with mildew: and they shall pursue thee until thou dost perish.

L’Éternel te frappera de consomption, de fièvre chaude, d’inflammations de toute nature, de marasme et de jaunisse, qui te poursuivront jusqu’à ce que tu succombes.

23 And thy heaven that [is] over thy head shall be brass, and the earth that [is] under thee [shall be] iron.

Ton ciel, qui s’étend sur ta tête, sera d’airain, et la terre sous tes pieds sera de fer.

24 The LORD shall make the rain of thy land powder and dust: from heaven shall it come down upon thee, until thou art destroyed.

L’Éternel transformera la pluie de ton pays en poussière et en sable, qui descendront sur toi du haut du ciel jusqu’à ce que tu périsses.

25 The LORD shall cause thee to be smitten before thy enemies: thou shalt go out one way against them, and flee seven ways before them; and shalt be removed into all the kingdoms of the earth.

L’Éternel te fera écraser par tes ennemis: si tu marches contre eux par un chemin, par sept chemins tu fuiras devant eux; et tu seras un objet de stupéfaction pour tous les royaumes de la terre.

26 And thy carcass shall be food to all fowls of the air, and to the beasts of the earth, and no man shall drive [them] away.

Et ta dépouille servira de pâture aux oiseaux du ciel et aux animaux de la terre, et nul ne les troublera.

27 The LORD will smite thee with the botch of Egypt, and with the emerods, and with the scab, and with the itch, of which thou canst not be healed.

Le Seigneur t’affligera de l’éruption égyptienne, d’hémorroïdes, de gale sèche et humide, dont tu ne pourras guérir.

28 The LORD shall smite thee with the madness, and blindness, and astonishment of heart:

Le Seigneur te frappera de vertige et de cécité, et de perturbation morale;

29 And thou shalt grope at noon-day, as the blind gropeth in darkness, and thou shalt not prosper in thy ways: and thou shalt be only oppressed and spoiled evermore, and no man shall save [thee].

et tu iras tâtonnant en plein midi comme fait l’aveugle dans les ténèbres, tu ne mèneras pas à bonne fin tes entreprises, tu seras opprimé et spolié incessamment, sans trouver un défenseur.

30 Thou shalt betroth a wife, and another man shall lie with her: thou shalt build a house, and thou shalt not dwell in it: thou shalt plant a vineyard, and shalt not gather the grapes of it.

Tu fianceras une femme, et un autre la possédera; tu bâtiras une maison, et tu ne t’y installeras point; tu planteras une vigne, et tu n’en auras point la primeur.

31 Thy ox [shall be] slain before thy eyes, and thou shalt not eat of it: thy ass [shall be] violently taken away from before thy face, and shall not be restored to thee: thy sheep [shall be] given to thy enemies, and thou shalt have none to rescue [them].

Ton bœuf sera égorgé sous tes yeux, et tu ne mangeras pas de sa chair; ton âne sera enlevé, toi présent, et ne te sera pas rendu; tes brebis tomberont au pouvoir de tes ennemis, et nul ne prendra parti pour toi.

32 Thy sons and thy daughters [shall be] given to another people, and thy eyes shall look, and fail [with longing] for them all the day long: and [there shall be] no might in thy hand.

Tes fils et tes filles seront livrés à un peuple étranger, et tes yeux le verront et se consumeront tout le temps à les attendre, mais ta main sera impuissante.

33 The fruit of thy land, and all thy labors, shall be eaten by a nation which thou knowest not: and thou shalt be only oppressed and crushed always:

Le fruit de ton sol, tout ton labeur, sera dévoré par un peuple à toi inconnu; tu seras en butte à une oppression, à une tyrannie de tous les jours,

34 So that thou shalt be mad for the sight of thy eyes which thou shalt see.

et tu tomberas en démence, au spectacle que verront tes yeux.

35 The LORD shall smite thee in the knees, and in the legs, with a sore botch that cannot be healed, from the sole of thy foot to the top of thy head.

Le Seigneur te frappera d’une éruption maligne sur les genoux, sur les cuisses, d’une éruption incurable, qui gagnera depuis la plante du pied jusqu’au sommet de la tête.

36 The LORD shall bring thee, and thy king which thou shalt set over thee, to a nation which neither thou nor thy fathers have known; and there shalt thou serve other gods, wood and stone.

Le Seigneur te fera passer, toi et le roi que tu te seras donné, chez une nation que tu n’auras jamais connue, toi ni tes pères; là, tu serviras des dieux étrangers, du bois et de la pierre!

37 And thou shalt become an astonishment, a proverb, and a by-word, among all nations whither the LORD shall lead thee.

Et tu deviendras l’étonnement, puis la fable et la risée de tous les peuples chez lesquels te conduira le Seigneur.

38 Thou shalt carry much seed into the field, and shalt gather [but] little: for the locust shall consume it.

Tu auras confié à ton champ de nombreuses semences; mince sera ta récolte, car la sauterelle la dévorera.

39 Thou shalt plant vineyards and dress [them], but shalt neither drink [of] the wine, nor gather [the grapes]: for the worm shall eat them.

Tu planteras des vignes et les cultiveras; mais tu n’en boiras pas le vin et tu ne l’encaveras point, car elles seront rongées par la chenille.

40 Thou shalt have olive-trees throughout all thy coasts, but thou shalt not anoint [thyself] with the oil: for thy olive shall cast [its fruit].

Tu posséderas des oliviers sur tout ton territoire; mais tu ne te parfumeras pas de leur huile, car tes oliviers couleront.

41 Thou shalt beget sons and daughters, but thou shalt not enjoy them: for they shall go into captivity.

Tu engendreras des fils et des filles et ils ne seront pas à toi, car ils s’en iront en captivité.

42 All thy trees and fruit of thy land shall the locust consume.

Tous tes arbres et les produits de ton sol, la courtilière les dévastera.

43 The stranger that [is] within thee shall rise above thee very high; and thou shalt come down very low.

L’Étranger qui sera chez toi s’élèvera de plus en plus au-dessus de toi, et toi tu descendras de plus en plus.

44 He shall lend to thee, and thou shalt not lend to him: he shall be the head, and thou shalt be the tail.

C’Est lui qui te prêtera, loin que tu puisses lui prêter; lui, il occupera le premier rang, toi, tu seras au dernier.

45 Moreover, all these curses shall come upon thee, and shall pursue thee, and overtake thee, till thou art destroyed: because thou hearkenedst not to the voice of the LORD thy God, to keep his commandments and his statutes which he commanded thee:

Et toutes ces malédictions doivent se réaliser sur toi, te poursuivre et t’atteindre jusqu’à ta ruine, parce que tu n’auras pas obéi à la voix de l’Éternel, ton Dieu, en gardant les préceptes et les lois qu’il t’a imposés.

46 And they shall be upon thee for a sign and for a wonder, and upon thy seed for ever.

Elles s’attacheront, comme un stigmate miraculeux, à toi et à ta postérité, indéfiniment.

47 Because thou didst not serve the LORD thy God with joyfulness and with gladness of heart, for the abundance of all [things]:

Et parce que tu n’auras pas servi l’Éternel, ton Dieu, avec joie et contentement de cœur, au sein de l’abondance,

48 Therefore shalt thou serve thy enemies which the LORD shall send against thee, in hunger, and in thirst, and in nakedness, and in want of all [things]: and he shall put a yoke of iron upon thy neck, until he hath destroyed thee.

tu serviras tes ennemis, suscités contre toi par l’Éternel, en proie à la faim, à la soif, au dénuement, à une pénurie absolue; et ils te mettront sur le cou un joug de fer, jusqu’à ce qu’ils t’aient anéanti.

49 The LORD shall bring a nation against thee from far, from the end of the earth, [as swift] as the eagle flieth, a nation whose language thou shalt not understand:

Le Seigneur lancera sur toi une nation lointaine, venue des confins de la terre, rapide comme l’aigle en son vol; nation dont tu n’entendras point la langue,

50 A nation of fierce countenance, which shall not regard the person of the old, nor show favor to the young:

nation inexorable, qui n’aura point de respect pour le vieillard, point de merci pour l’adolescent!

51 And he shall eat the fruit of thy cattle, and the fruit of thy land, until thou art destroyed: which [also] shall not leave thee [either] corn, wine, or oil, [or] the increase of thy cattle, or flocks of thy sheep, until he hath destroyed thee.

Elle se repaîtra du fruit de ton bétail et du fruit de ton sol, jusqu’à ce que tu succombes; elle enlèvera, sans t’en rien laisser, le blé, le vin et l’huile, les produits de tes taureaux et de tes fécondes brebis, jusqu’à ta ruine entière.

52 And he shall besiege thee in all thy gates, until thy high and fortified walls come down, in which thou didst trust, throughout all thy land; and he shall besiege thee in all thy gates throughout all thy land which the LORD thy God hath given thee.

Elle mettra le siège devant toutes tes portes, jusqu’à ce que tombent, dans tout ton pays, ces murailles si hautes et si fortes en qui tu mets ta confiance; oui, elle t’assiégera dans toutes tes villes, dans tout ce pays que l’Éternel, ton Dieu, t’aura donné.

53 And thou shalt eat the fruit of thy own body, the flesh of thy sons and of thy daughters which the LORD thy God hath given thee, in the siege and in the straitness with which thy enemies shall distress thee:

Et tu dévoreras le fruit de tes entrailles, la chair de tes fils et de tes filles, ces présents de l’Éternel, ton Dieu, par suite du siège et de la détresse où t’étreindra ton ennemi.

54 [So that] the man [that is] tender among you, and very delicate, his eye shall be evil towards his brother, and towards the wife of his bosom, and towards the remnant of his children whom he shall leave:

L’Homme le plus délicat parmi vous et le plus voluptueux verra d’un œil hostile son frère, sa compagne et le reste d’enfants qu’il aura encore,

55 So that he will not give to any of them of the flesh of his children whom he shall eat: because he hath nothing left him in the siege and in the straitness with which thy enemies shall distress thee in all thy gates.

ne voulant donner à aucun d’eux de la chair de ses enfants, qu’il mangera faute d’autres ressources; tellement tu seras assiégé et cerné par ton ennemi dans toutes tes villes.

56 The tender and delicate woman among you, who would not venture to set the sole of her foot upon the ground for delicateness and tenderness, her eye shall be evil towards the husband of her bosom, and towards her son, and towards her daughter,

La plus sensible parmi vous et la plus délicate, si délicate et si sensible qu’elle n’aurait jamais risqué de poser la plante de son pied sur la terre, verra d’un œil hostile l’homme qu’elle serrait dans ses bras, et son fils et sa fille,

57 And towards her young one, her own offspring, and towards her children which she shall bear: for she shall eat them for want of all [things] secretly in the siege and straitness with which thy enemy shall distress thee in thy gates.

jusqu’au nouveau-né sorti de ses flancs, jusqu’aux jeunes enfants dont elle est la mère, car, dénuée de tout, elle se cachera pour les dévorer! Telle sera la détresse où te réduira ton ennemi, t’assiégeant dans tes murs.

58 If thou wilt not observe to do all the words of this law that are written in this book, that thou mayest fear this glorious and fearful name, THE LORD THY GOD;

Oui, si tu n’as soin d’observer toutes les paroles de cette doctrine, écrites dans ce livre; de révérer ce nom auguste et redoutable: l’ETERNEL, ton Dieu,

59 Then the LORD will make thy plagues wonderful, and the plagues of thy seed, [even] great plagues, and of long continuance, and severe sicknesses, and of long continuance.

l’Éternel donnera une gravité insigne à tes plaies et à celles de ta postérité: plaies intenses et tenaces, maladies cruelles et persistantes.

60 Moreover, he will bring upon thee all the diseases of Egypt, of which thou wast afraid; and they shall cleave to thee.

Il déchaînera sur toi tous les fléaux de l’Egypte, objets de ta terreur, et ils seront chez toi en permanence.

61 Also every sickness, and every plague which [is] not written in the book of this law, them will the LORD bring upon thee, until thou art destroyed.

Bien d’autres maladies encore, bien d’autres plaies non consignées dans le livre de cette doctrine, le Seigneur les fera surgir contre toi, jusqu’à ce que tu sois exterminé.

62 And ye shall be left few in number, whereas ye were as the stars of heaven for multitude; because thou wouldst not obey the voice of the LORD thy God.

Et vous serez réduits à une poignée d’hommes, après avoir égalé en multitude les étoiles du ciel, parce que tu auras été sourd à la voix de l’Éternel, ton Dieu.

63 And it shall come to pass, [that] as the LORD rejoiced over you to do you good, and to multiply you; so the LORD will rejoice over you to destroy you, and to bring you to naught; and ye shall be plucked from off the land whither thou goest to possess it.

Alors, autant le Seigneur s’était plu à vous combler de ses bienfaits et à vous multiplier, autant il se plaira à consommer votre perte, à vous anéantir; et vous serez arrachés de ce sol dont vous allez prendre possession.

64 And the LORD shall scatter thee among all people from the one end of the earth even to the other; and there thou shalt serve other gods, which neither thou nor thy fathers have known, [even] wood and stone.

Et l’Éternel te dispersera parmi tous les peuples, d’une extrémité de la terre à l’autre; et là tu serviras des dieux étrangers, jadis inconnus à toi comme à tes pères, faits de bois et de pierre.

65 And among these nations shalt thou find no ease, neither shall the sole of thy foot have rest: but the LORD shall give thee there a trembling heart, and failing of eyes, and sorrow of mind:

Et parmi ces nations mêmes tu ne trouveras pas de repos, pas un point d’appui pour la plante de ton pied; là, le Seigneur te donnera un cœur effaré, mettra la défaillance dans tes yeux, l’angoisse dans ton âme,

66 And thy life shall hang in doubt before thee; and thou shalt fear day and night, and shalt have no assurance of thy life:

et ton existence flottera incertaine devant toi, et tu trembleras nuit et jour, et tu ne croiras pas à ta propre vie!

67 In the morning thou shalt say, O that it were evening, and at evening thou shalt say, O that it were morning! for the fear of thy heart with which thou shalt fear, and for the sight of thy eyes which thou shalt see.

Tu diras chaque matin: "Fût-ce encore hier soir!" Chaque soir tu diras: "Fût-ce encore ce matin!" Si horribles seront les transes de ton cœur et le spectacle qui frappera tes yeux.

68 And the LORD shall bring thee into Egypt again with ships, by the way of which I have said to thee, Thou shalt see it no more again: and there ye shall be sold to your enemies for bond-men and bond-women, and no man shall buy [you].

Et le Seigneur te fera reprendre, sur des navires, la route de l’Egypte, cette route où je t’avais dit que tu ne repasserais plus; et là vous vous offrirez en vente à vos ennemis comme esclaves et servantes, mais personne ne voudra vous acheter!"
