Amos 7

1 Thus hath the Lord GOD shown to me; and behold, he formed grasshoppers in the beginning of the shooting up of the latter growth; and lo, [it was] the latter growth after the king's mowings.

Voici ce que m’a montré le Seigneur Dieu: or voici qu’il formait la sauterelle, lorsque les plantes commençaient à germer par la pluie de l’arrière-saison; et voici la pluie de l’arrière-saison après la coupe du roi.

2 And it came to pass, [that] when they had made an end of eating the grass of the land, then I said, O Lord GOD, forgive, I beseech thee: by whom shall Jacob arise? for he [is] small.

Et il arriva que lorsque la sauterelle eut achevé de manger l’herbe de la terre, je dis: Seigneur Dieu, soyez propice, je vous conjure; qui rétablira Jacob, car il est bien faible?

3 The LORD repented for this: It shall not be, saith the LORD.

Sur cela, le Seigneur a eu pitié: Ce que tu crains ne sera pas, dit le Seigneur.

4 Thus hath the Lord GOD shown to me: and behold, the Lord GOD called to contend by fire, and it devoured the great deep, and did eat up a part.

Voici ce que m’a montré le Seigneur Dieu; or, voici que le Seigneur Dieu appelait le feu pour exercer le jugement, et il dévora un grand abîme, et consuma en même temps une partie de la plaine.

5 Then said I, O Lord GOD, cease, I beseech thee: by whom shall Jacob arise? for he [is] small.

Et je dis: Seigneur Dieu, apaisez-vous, je vous conjure; qui rétablira Jacob, car il est bien faible?

6 The LORD repented for this: This also shall not be, saith the Lord GOD.

Sur cela, le Seigneur eut pitié: Il n’en sera pas ainsi, dit le Seigneur Dieu.

7 Thus he showed me: and behold, the LORD stood upon a wall [made] by a plumb-line, with a plumb-line in his hand.

Voici ce que m’a montré le Seigneur Dieu; voici que le Seigneur se tenait debout sur une muraille crépie, et que dans sa main était une truelle de maçon.

8 And the LORD said to me, Amos, what seest thou? and I said, A plumb-line. Then said the LORD, Behold, I will set a plumb-line in the midst of my people Israel: I will not again pass by them any more:

Et le Seigneur me dit: Que vois-tu, Amos? Et je dis: Une truelle de maçon. Et le Seigneur dit: Voici que moi je déposerai la truelle au milieu de mon peuple d’Israël; et je ne le crépirai plus à l’avenir.

9 And the high places of Isaac shall be desolate, and the sanctuaries of Israel shall be laid waste; and I will rise against the house of Jeroboam with the sword.

Et les hauts lieux consacrés à l’idole seront détruits, et les sanctuaires d’Israël seront désolés; et je m’élèverai avec le glaive contre la maison de Jéroboam.

10 Then Amaziah the priest of Beth-el sent to Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, Amos hath conspired against thee in the midst of the house of Israel: the land is not able to bear all his words.

Et Amasias, prêtre de Béthel, envoya vers Jéroboam, roi d’Israël, disant: Amos s’est révolté contre toi au sein de la maison d’Israël. Ta terre ne pourra supporter tous ses discours.

11 For thus Amos saith, Jeroboam shall die by the sword, and Israel shall surely be led away captive out of their own land.

Car voici ce que dit Amos: Par le glaive mourra Jéroboam, et Israël émigrera de sa terre;

12 Also Amaziah said to Amos, O thou seer, go flee thee away into the land of Judah, and there eat bread, and prophesy there:

Et Amasias dit à Amos: Toi qui vois, va, fuis dans la terre de Juda et mange là ton pain, et tu prophétiseras là.

13 But prophesy not again any more at Beth-el: for it [is] the king's chapel, and it [is] the king's court.

Mais dans Béthel tu ne prophétiseras plus à l’avenir, parce que c’est le sanctuaire du roi, et le siège du royaume.

14 Then answered Amos, and said to Amaziah, I [was] no prophet, neither [was] I a prophet's son; but I [was] a herdman, and a gatherer of sycamore fruit:

Et Amos répondit et dit à Amasias: Je ne suis pas fils de prophète, mais je suis pâtre, effeuillant des sycomores.

15 And the LORD took me as I followed the flock, and the LORD said to me, Go, prophesy to my people Israel.

Et le Seigneur m’a pris lorsque je suivais mon troupeau, et le Seigneur m’a dit: Va, prophétise à mon peuple d’Israël.

16 Now therefore hear thou the word of the LORD: Thou sayest, Prophesy not against Israel, and drop not [thy word] against the house of Isaac.

Et maintenant écoute la parole du Seigneur: Tu dis: Tu ne prophétiseras pas sur Israël, et tu ne répandras pas tes oracles sur la maison de l’idole.

17 Therefore thus saith the LORD; Thy wife shall be a harlot in the city, and thy sons and thy daughters shall fall by the sword, and thy land shall be divided by line; and thou shalt die in a polluted land: and Israel shall surely go from his land into captivity.

À cause de cela, voici ce que dit le Seigneur: Ta femme dans la cité forniquera; tes fils et tes filles sous le glaive tomberont; ton sol sera mesuré au cordeau; et toi, c’est sur une terre souillée que tu mourras, et Israël captif émigrera de sa terre.
