Acts 8
1 And Saul was consenting to his death. And at that time there was a great persecution against the church which was at Jerusalem; and they were all dispersed throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria, except the apostles.
Or Saul avait pris plaisir à son supplice. Or, ce jour-là, une grande persécution fut dirigée contre l'église qui était à Jérusalem; mais tous se dispersèrent dans les contrées de la Judée et de la Samarie, sauf les apôtres.
2 And devout men carried Stephen [to his burial], and made great lamentation over him.
Toutefois des hommes pieux enterrèrent Etienne et le pleurèrent bruyamment.
3 As for Saul, he made havoc of the church, entering into every house, and hauling men and women committed [them] to prison.
Saul, de son côté, ravageait l'église; envahissant les maisons, il en arrachait hommes et femmes et les livrait pour être jetés en prison.
4 Therefore they that were dispersed went every where preaching the word.
Ceux donc qui s'étaient dispersés s'en allèrent de côté et d'autre annonçant la bonne nouvelle de la parole.
5 Then Philip went down to the city of Samaria, and preached Christ to them.
Or Philippe, étant venu dans la ville de Samarie, leur prêchait le Christ.
6 And the people with one accord gave heed to those things which Philip spoke, hearing and seeing the miracles which he performed.
La foule s'accordait à prêter attention à ce que disait Philippe, parce qu'elle entendait parler et était témoin des miracles qu'il faisait;
7 For unclean spirits, crying with loud voice, came out of many that were possessed: and many taken with palsies, and that were lame, were healed.
en effet les esprits impurs sortirent de plusieurs de ceux qui en étaient possédés, en poussant de grands cris, tandis que plusieurs paralytiques et impotents furent guéris.
8 And there was great joy in that city.
Et ce fut une grande joie dans cette ville.
9 But there was a certain man called Simon, who before in the same city used sorcery, and bewitched the people of Samaria, giving out that himself was some great one:
Mais un homme nommé Simon, qui déjà auparavant habitait la ville, y exerçait la magie et tenait sous le charme la nation des Samaritains, en se disant un grand personnage.
10 To whom they all gave heed, from the least to the greatest, saying, This man is the great power of God.
Tous, du petit au grand, lui prêtaient attention, et disaient: « Celui-ci est la puissance de Dieu, qui est appelée grande. »
11 And to him they had regard, because that for a long time he had bewitched them with sorceries.
Et ils lui prêtaient attention, parce que pendant longtemps il les avait tenus sous le charme par ses sortilèges.
12 But when they believed Philip, preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized both men and women.
Mais quand ils eurent cru Philippe, qui leur annonçait la bonne nouvelle du royaume de Dieu et du nom de Jésus-Christ, hommes et femmes se faisaient baptiser.
13 Then Simon himself believed also: and when he was baptized, he continued with Philip, and wondered, beholding the miracles and signs which were done.
Or Simon lui-même crut aussi, et après avoir été baptisé il s'attacha à Philippe; la vue des miracles et des grands prodiges qui s'opéraient le tenait sous le charme.
14 Now when the apostles who were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent to them Peter and John:
Or, les apôtres qui étaient à Jérusalem, ayant appris que la Samarie accueillait la parole de Dieu, leur envoyèrent Pierre et Jean,
15 Who, when they had come down, prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit:
qui, lorsqu'ils furent arrivés, prièrent pour eux, afin qu'ils reçussent l'esprit saint;
16 (For as yet he had fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.)
car il n'était encore tombé sur aucun d'eux, mais ils avaient seulement été baptisés au nom du seigneur Jésus;
17 Then they laid [their] hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.
alors ils leur imposèrent les mains et ils recevaient l'esprit saint.
18 And when Simon saw that through laying on of the apostles' hands the Holy Spirit was given, he offered them money,
Or Simon, ayant vu que l'esprit était donné par l'imposition des mains des apôtres, leur offrit de l'argent en disant:
19 Saying, Give me also this power, that on whomsoever I lay hands, he may receive the Holy Spirit.
« Octroyez-moi aussi cette autorité, afin que celui à qui j'aurai imposé les mains reçoive l'esprit saint. »
20 But Peter said to him, Thy money perish with thee, because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money.
Mais Pierre lui dit: « Que ton argent périsse avec toi, puisque tu as cru acquérir le don de Dieu avec de l'argent;
21 Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter: for thy heart is not right in the sight of God.
il n'y a pour toi ni portion ni lot dans cette affaire, car ton cœur n'est pas droit devant Dieu;
22 Repent therefore of this thy wickedness, and pray God, if perhaps the thought of thy heart may be forgiven thee.
repens-toi donc de ta méchanceté dont tu viens de faire preuve, et prie le Seigneur, pour voir si le projet de ton cœur te sera pardonné;
23 For I perceive that thou art in the gall of bitterness, and [in] the bond of iniquity.
car je vois que tu te trouves dans du fiel amer et dans les nœuds de l'injustice. »
24 Then answered Simon, and said, Pray ye to the Lord for me, that none of these things which ye have spoken come upon me.
Et Simon répliqua: « Priez vous-mêmes pour moi le Seigneur, afin que rien de ce dont vous avez parlé ne m'arrive. »
25 And they, when they had testified and preached the word of the Lord, returned to Jerusalem, and preached the gospel in many villages of the Samaritans.
Pour eux donc, après avoir rendu témoignage et proclamé la parole du Seigneur, ils revinrent à Jérusalem, et ils annoncèrent la bonne nouvelle dans plusieurs villages des Samaritains.
26 And the angel of the Lord spoke to Philip, saying, Arise, and go towards the south, to the way that goeth down from Jerusalem to Gaza, which is desert.
Or, un ange du Seigneur s'adressa à Philippe en disant: « Lève-toi, et va du côté du midi sur la route qui descend de Jérusalem à Gaza; elle est déserte. »
27 And he arose, and went: and behold, a man of Ethiopia, a eunuch of great authority under Candace queen of the Ethiopians, who had the charge of all her treasure, and had come to Jerusalem to worship,
Et s'étant levé il se mit en chemin; et voici, un Éthiopien, principal eunuque de Candace, reine des Éthiopiens, et qui était son trésorier général, était venu à Jérusalem pour adorer.
28 Was returning; and sitting in his chariot, read Isaiah the prophet.
Or il s'en retournait, et, assis sur son char, il lisait le prophète Ésaïe;
29 Then the Spirit said to Philip, Go near and join thyself to this chariot.
or l'Esprit dit à Philippe: « Approche-toi et tiens-toi collé à ce char. »
30 And Philip ran thither to [him], and heard him reading the prophet Isaiah, and said, Understandest thou what thou readest?
Et Philippe étant accouru l'entendit qui lisait Ésaïe le prophète, et il dit: « Est-ce que tu comprends bien ce que tu lis? »
31 And he said, How can I, except some man should guide me? And he desired Philip that he would come up, and sit with him.
Mais l'autre dit: « Eh, comment le pourrais-je, si personne ne me guide? » Et il invita Philippe à monter et à s'asseoir à côté de lui.
32 The place of the scripture which he read was this, He was led as a sheep to the slaughter; and like a lamb dumb before his shearer, so he opened not his mouth:
Or voici quel était le contenu du texte qu'il lisait: « C'est comme une brebis qu'il a été conduit à la tuerie; et, de même qu'un agneau est muet devant celui qui le tond, de même il n'ouvre point la bouche;
33 In his humiliation his judgment was taken away: and who shall declare his generation? for his life is taken from the earth.
c'est dans l'humiliation que s'est consommé son jugement. Qui dépeindra les hommes de sa génération? Car sa vie est enlevée de dessus la terre. »
34 And the eunuch answered Philip, and said, I pray thee, of whom speaketh the prophet this? of himself, or of some other man?
L'eunuque s'adressant à Philippe: « Je te prie, dit-il, de qui le prophète parle-t-il ainsi? Est-ce de lui-même, ou de quelque autre? »
35 Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached to him Jesus.
Là-dessus Philippe, ouvrant la bouche et commençant par ce texte-là, lui annonça la bonne nouvelle de Jésus.
36 And as they went on [their] way, they came to a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, [here is] water; what doth hinder me to be baptized?
Or, comme ils cheminaient le long de la route, ils arrivèrent vers de l'eau, et l'eunuque dit: « Voici de l'eau; qu'est-ce qui empêche que je ne sois baptisé? »
37 And Philip said, If thou believest with all thy heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.
Et il fit arrêter son char, et ils descendirent l'un et l'autre dans l'eau, Philippe et l'eunuque, et il le baptisa.
38 And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they both went down into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him.
Mais, quand ils furent ressortis de l'eau, l'esprit du Seigneur enleva Philippe, et l'eunuque ne le vit plus,
39 And when they had come up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip, that the eunuch saw him no more: and he went on his way rejoicing.
car tandis qu'il continuait sa route plein de joie,
40 But Philip was found at Azotus: and passing through, he preached in all the cities, till he came to Cesarea.
Philippe se trouva dans Azot. Et il s'en allait de côté et d'autre, évangélisant toutes les villes jusques à ce qu'il arrivât à Césarée.
