Acts 27
1 And when it was determined that we should sail into Italy, they delivered Paul and certain other prisoners to [one] named Julius, a centurion of Augustus' band.
Lorsqu’il eut été décidé que nous irions par mer en Italie, on remit Paul et quelques autres prisonniers à un centurion nommé Julius, de la cohorte Augusta.
2 And entering into a ship of Adramyttium, we lanched, meaning to sail by the coasts of Asia, [one] Aristarchus, a Macedonian of Thessalonica, being with us.
Nous montâmes sur un vaisseau d’Adramytte qui devait longer les côtes de l’Asie, et nous levâmes l’ancre, ayant avec nous Aristarque, Macédonien de Thessalonique.
3 And the next [day] we touched at Sidon. And Julius courteously treated Paul, and gave [him] liberty to go to his friends to refresh himself.
Le jour suivant, nous abordâmes à Sidon; et Julius, qui traitait Paul avec bienveillance, lui permit d’aller chez ses amis et de recevoir leurs soins.
4 And when we had lanched from thence, we sailed under Cyprus, because the winds were contrary.
Etant partis de là, nous côtoyâmes l’île de Chypre, parce que les vents étaient contraires.
5 And when we had sailed over the sea of Cilicia and Pamphylia, we came to Mira, [a city] of Lycia.
Après avoir traversé la mer qui baigne la Cilicie et la Pamphylie, nous arrivâmes à Myre, en Lycie.
6 And there the centurion found a ship of Alexandria sailing into Italy; and he put us therein.
Le centurion y ayant trouvé un navire d’Alexandrie qui faisait voile pour l’Italie, il nous y fit monter.
7 And when we had sailed slowly many days, and scarce had come over against Cnidus, the wind not suffering us, we sailed under Crete, over against Salmone:
Pendant plusieurs jours nous navigâmes lentement, et ce ne fut pas sans difficulté que nous arrivâmes à la hauteur de Cnide, où le vent ne nous permit pas d’aborder. Nous passâmes au-dessous de l’île de Crète, du côté de Salmoné,
8 And hardly passing it, came to a place which is called, The fair havens; nigh to which was the city [of] Lasea.
et longeant la côte avec peine, nous arrivâmes à un lieu nommé Bons-Ports, près duquel était la ville de Laséa.
9 Now when much time was spent, and when sailing was now dangerous, because the fast was now already past, Paul admonished [them].
Un temps assez long s’était écoulé et la navigation devenait dangereuse, car l’époque du jeûne était déjà passée. Paul fit des représentations à l’équipage:
10 And said to them, Sirs, I perceive that this voyage will be with hurt and much damage, not only of the lading and ship, but also of our lives.
« Mes amis, leur dit-il, je vois que la navigation ne pourra se faire sans danger et sans de graves dommages, non seulement pour la cargaison et le navire, mais encore pour nos personnes. »
11 Nevertheless, the centurion believed the master and the owner of the ship more than the things which were spoken by Paul.
Mais le centurion avait plus de confiance en ce que disait le pilote et le patron du navire, que dans les paroles de Paul.
12 And because the haven was not commodious to winter in, the greater part advised to depart thence also, if by any means they might attain to Phenice, [and there] to winter; [which is] a haven of Crete, and lieth towards the south-west and north-west.
Et comme le port n’était pas bon pour hiverner, la plupart furent d’avis de reprendre la mer et de tâcher d’atteindre, pour y passer l’hiver, Phénice, port de Crète qui regarde l’Africus et le Corus.
13 And when the south wind blew softly, supposing that they had obtained [their] purpose, loosing [thence], they sailed close by Crete.
Un léger vent du sud vint à souffler; se croyant maîtres d’exécuter leur dessein, ils levèrent l’ancre et rasèrent plus près les côtes de Crète.
14 But not long after there arose against it a tempestuous wind, called Euroclydon.
Mais bientôt un vent impétueux, nommé Euraquilon, se déchaîna sur l’île.
15 And when the ship was caught, and could not bear up into the wind, we let [her] drive.
Le navire fut entraîné, sans pouvoir lutter contre l’ouragan, et nous nous laissâmes aller à la dérive.
16 And running under a certain isle which is called Clauda, we had much work to come by the boat:
Nous passâmes rapidement au-dessous d’une petite île, nommée Cauda, et nous eûmes beaucoup de peine à remonter la chaloupe.
17 Which when they had taken up, they used helps, undergirding the ship; and fearing lest they should fall into the quicksands, struck sail, and so were driven.
Quand on l’eut hissée, les matelots, ayant recours à tous les moyens de salut, ceintrèrent le navire, et dans la crainte d’échouer sur la Syrte, ils abattirent la voilure et se laissèrent aller.
18 And we being exceedingly tossed with a tempest, the next [day] they lightened the ship;
Comme nous étions violemment battus par la tempête, on jeta le lendemain la cargaison à la mer,
19 And the third [day] we cast out with our own hands the tackling of the ship.
et le jour suivant nous y lançâmes de nos propres mains les agrès du navire.
20 And when neither sun nor stars in many days appeared, and no small tempest lay on [us], all hope that we should be saved was then taken away.
Pendant plusieurs jours, ni le soleil ni les étoiles ne se montrèrent, et la tempête continuait de sévir avec violence: tout espoir de salut s’était évanoui.
21 But after long abstinence, Paul stood forth in the midst of them, and said, Sirs, ye should have hearkened to me, and not have loosed from Crete, and to have gained this harm and loss.
Depuis longtemps personne n’avait mangé. Paul, se levant alors au milieu d’eux, leur dit: « Vous auriez dû m’écouter, mes amis, ne pas partir de Crète, et vous épargner ce péril et ce dommage.
22 And now I exhort you to be of good cheer: for there shall be no loss of life among you, but of the ship.
Cependant je vous exhorte à prendre courage, car aucun de vous ne perdra la vie; le vaisseau seul sera perdu.
23 For there stood by me this night the angel of God, whose I am, and whom I serve,
Cette nuit même un ange de Dieu à qui j’appartiens et que je sers, m’est apparu,
24 Saying, Fear not, Paul; thou must be brought before Cesar: and lo, God hath given thee all them that sail with thee.
et m’a dit: Paul, ne crains pas; il faut que tu comparaisses devant César, et voici que Dieu t’a donné tous ceux qui naviguent avec toi.
25 Wherefore, sirs, be of good cheer: for I believe God, that it will be even as it was told to me.
Courage donc, mes amis; car j’ai confiance en Dieu qu’il en sera comme il m’a été dit.
26 But we must be cast upon a certain isle.
Nous devons échouer sur une île. »
27 When the fourteenth night was come, as we were driven up and down in Adria, about midnight the shipmen suspected that they drew near to some country:
La quatorzième nuit, comme nous étions ballottés dans l’Adriatique, les matelots soupçonnèrent, vers le milieu de la nuit, qu’on approchait de quelque terre.
28 And sounded, and found [it] twenty fathoms: and when they had gone a little further, they sounded again, and found [it] fifteen fathoms.
Jetant aussitôt la sonde, ils trouvèrent vingt brasses; un peu plus loin, il la jetèrent de nouveau, et en trouvèrent quinze.
29 Then fearing lest we should fall upon rocks, they cast four anchors out of the stern, and wished for the day.
Dans la crainte de heurter contre des récifs, ils jetèrent quatre ancres de la poupe, et attendirent le jour avec impatience.
30 And as the shipmen were about to flee out of the ship, when they had let down the boat into the sea, under color as though they would cast anchors out of the foreship,
Mais comme les matelots cherchaient à s’échapper du navire, et que déjà, sous prétexte d’aller jeter des ancres du côté de la proue, ils avaient mis la chaloupe à flot,
31 Paul said to the centurion, and to the soldiers, Except these abide in the ship, ye cannot be saved.
Paul dit au centurion et aux soldats: « Si ces hommes ne restent pas dans le navire, vous êtes tous perdus. »
32 Then the soldiers cut off the ropes of the boat, and let her fall off.
Alors les soldats coupèrent les amarres de la chaloupe, et la laissèrent tomber.
33 And while the day was coming on, Paul besought [them] all to take food, saying, This day is the fourteenth day that ye have tarried, and continued fasting, having taken nothing.
En attendant le jour, Paul exhorta tout le monde à prendre de la nourriture: « Voici, leur dit-il, le quatorzième jour que, remplis d’anxiété, vous restez à jeun sans rien prendre.
34 Wherefore I pray you to take [some] food; for this is for your health: for there shall not a hair fall from the head of any of you.
Je vous engage donc à manger, car cela importe à votre salut; aucun de vous ne perdra un cheveu de sa tête. »
35 And when he had thus spoken, he took bread, and gave thanks to God in presence of them all; and when he had broken [it], he began to eat.
Ayant ainsi parlé, il prit du pain, et après avoir rendu grâces à Dieu devant tous, il le rompit et se mit à manger.
36 Then they were all of good cheer, and they also took food.
Et tous, reprenant courage, mangèrent aussi.
37 And we were in all in the ship two hundred and seventy six souls.
Nous étions en tout, sur le bâtiment, deux cent soixante-seize personnes.
38 And when they had eaten enough, they lightened the ship, and cast the wheat into the sea.
Quand ils eurent mangés suffisamment, ils allégèrent le navire en jetant les provisions à la mer.
39 And when it was day, they knew not the land: but they discovered a certain creek with a shore, into which they purposed, if it were possible, to thrust in the ship.
Le jour étant venu, ils ne reconnurent pas la côte; mais ayant aperçu une baie qui avait une plage de sable, ils résolurent de faire échouer le navire, s’ils le pouvaient.
40 And when they had taken up the anchors, they committed [themselves] to the sea, and loosed the rudder bands, and hoisted the mainsail to the wind, and made towards the shore.
On coupa donc les amarres des ancres, qu’on abandonna à la mer; on lâcha en même temps les attaches des gouvernails, on mit au vent la voile d’artimon et on se dirigea vers la plage.
41 And falling into a place where two seas met, they ran the ship aground; and the forepart stuck fast, and remained immovable, but the hinder part was broken with the violence of the waves.
Mais ayant touché sur une langue de terre, ils y échouèrent; la proue s’enfonça et resta immobile, tandis que la poupe se disloquait sous la violence des vagues.
42 And the soldiers' counsel was to kill the prisoners, lest any of them should swim out, and escape.
Les soldats furent d’avis de tuer les prisonniers, de peur que quelqu’un d’entre eux ne s’échappât à la nage.
43 But the centurion, willing to save Paul, kept them from [their] purpose, and commanded that they who could swim, should cast [themselves] first [into the sea], and get to land:
Mais le centurion, qui voulait sauver Paul, les empêcha d’exécuter leur dessein. Il ordonna à ceux qui savaient nager de se jeter à l’eau les premiers et de gagner la terre,
44 And the rest, some on boards, and some on [broken pieces] of the ship: And so it came to pass, that they all escaped safe to land.
et aux autres de se mettre sur des planches ou sur des débris du vaisseau. Et ainsi tous atteignirent le rivage sains et saufs.
