2 Samuel 14
1 Now Joab the son of Zeruiah perceived that the king's heart [was] towards Absalom.
Joab, fils de Sarvia, s’aperçut que le cœur du roi se tournait vers Absalom.
2 And Joab sent to Tekoah, and brought thence a wise woman, and said to her, I pray thee, feign thyself to be a mourner, and put on now mourning apparel, and anoint not thyself with oil, but be as a woman that had a long time mourned for the dead:
Joab envoya chercher à Thécua une femme habile, et il lui dit: « Feins d’être dans le deuil et revêts des habits de deuil; ne t’oins pas d’huile et sois comme une femme qui depuis longtemps est dans le deuil pour un mort.
3 And come to the king, and speak in this manner to him. So Joab put the words in her mouth.
Tu viendras chez le roi et tu lui tiendras ce discours... » Et Joab lui mit dans la bouche ce qu’elle devait dire.
4 And when the woman of Tekoah spoke to the king, she fell on her face to the ground, and did obeisance, and said, Help, O king.
La femme de Thécua vint parler au roi. Tombant la face contre terre et se prosternant, elle dit: « O roi, sauve-moi! »
5 And the king said to her, What aileth thee? And she answered, I [am] indeed a widow woman, and my husband is dead.
Le roi lui dit: « Qu’as-tu? » Elle répondit: « Je suis une veuve, mon mari est mort.
6 And thy handmaid had two sons, and they two strove together in the field, and [there was] none to part them, but the one smote the other and slew him.
Or ta servante avait deux fils; et ils se sont tous deux querellés dans les champs; comme il n’y avait personne pour les séparer, l’un a frappé l’autre et l’a tué.
7 And behold, the whole family hath risen against thy handmaid, and they said, Deliver him that smote his brother, that we may kill him, for the life of his brother whom he slew; and we will destroy the heir also: and so they will quench my coal which is left, and will not leave to my husband [neither] name nor remainder upon the earth.
Et voici que toute la famille s’est levée contre ta servante, en disant: Livre le meurtrier de son frère; nous le ferons mourir pour la vie de son frère qu’il a tué, et nous détruirons même l’héritier! Ils éteindront ainsi le charbon qui me reste, pour ne laisser à mon mari ni un nom ni un survivant sur la face de la terre. »
8 And the king said to the woman, Go to thy house, and I will give charge concerning thee.
Le roi dit à la femme: « Va à ta maison; je donnerai des ordres à ton sujet. »
9 And the woman of Tekoah said to the king, My lord, O king, the iniquity [be] on me, and on my father's house: and the king and his throne [be] guiltless.
La femme de Thécua dit au roi: « Que ce soit sur moi, ô roi mon Seigneur, et sur la maison de mon père que la faute retombe; que le roi et son trône n’aient pas à en souffrir! »
10 And the king said, Whoever saith [aught] to thee, bring him to me, and he shall not touch thee any more.
Le roi dit: « Si quelqu’un t’inquiète encore, amène-le-moi, et il ne lui arrivera plus de te toucher. »
11 Then said she, I pray thee, let the king remember the LORD thy God, that thou wouldest not suffer the revengers of blood to destroy any more, lest they destroy my son. And he said, [As] the LORD liveth, there shall not one hair of thy son fall to the earth.
Elle dit: « Que le roi fasse mention de Yahweh, ton Dieu, afin que le vengeur du sang n’augmente pas le dommage, et qu’on ne détruise pas mon fils! » Il répondit: « Aussi vrai que Yahweh est vivant! Il ne tombera pas à terre un cheveu de ton fils. »
12 Then the woman said, Let thy handmaid, I pray thee, speak [one] word to my lord the king. And he said, Say on.
La femme dit: « Permets à ta servante, je te prie, de dire un mot à mon seigneur le roi! » Il répondit: « Parle! »
13 And the woman said, Why then hast thou thought such a thing against the people of God? for the king doth speak this thing as one who is faulty, in that the king doth not bring home again his banished.
Et la femme dit: « Pourquoi as-tu pensé ainsi à l’égard du peuple de Dieu — le roi, en prononçant ce jugement, se déclare coupable, — à savoir que le roi ne rappelle pas celui qu’il a banni.
14 For we must needs die, and [are] as water spilt on the ground, which cannot be gathered up again; neither doth God respect [any] person: yet doth he devise means, that his banished be not expelled from him.
Car nous mourrons certainement; nous sommes comme les eaux répandues à terre et qui ne se rassemblent plus; Dieu n’ôte pas la vie, et il forme le dessein que le banni ne reste pas banni de sa présence.
15 Now therefore that I have come to speak of this thing to my lord the king, [it is] because the people have made me afraid: and thy handmaid said, I will now speak to the king; it may be that the king will perform the request of his handmaid.
Maintenant, si je suis venue dire ces choses au roi mon seigneur, c’est que le peuple m’a effrayée; et ta servante a dit: Je veux parler au roi; peut-être le roi fera-t-il ce que dira ta servante.
16 For the king will hear, to deliver his handmaid from the hand of the man [that would] destroy me and my son together out of the inheritance of God.
Oui, le roi écoutera, pour délivrer sa servante de la main de l’homme qui veut nous retrancher, mon fils et moi, de l’héritage de Dieu.
17 Then thy handmaid said, The word of my lord the king, will now be comfortable: for as an angel of God, so [is] my lord the king to discern good and bad: therefore the LORD thy God will be with thee.
Ta servant a dit: Que la parole de mon seigneur le roi me donne le repos! Car mon seigneur le roi est comme un ange de Dieu, pour écouter le bien et le mal. Et que Yahweh, ton Dieu, soit avec toi! »
18 Then the king answered and said to the woman, Hide not from me, I pray thee, the thing that I shall ask thee. And the woman said, Let my lord the king now speak.
Le roi répondit et dit à la femme: « Ne me cache rien de ce que je vais te demander. » La femme dit: « Que mon seigneur le roi parle! »
19 And the king said, [Is not] the hand of Joab with thee in all this? And the woman answered and said, [As] thy soul liveth, my lord the king, none can turn to the right hand or to the left from aught that my lord the king hath spoken: for thy servant Joab, he bade me, and he put all these words in the mouth of thy handmaid:
Et le roi dit: « La main de Joab est-elle avec toi dans tout cela? » La femme répondit: « Aussi vrai que ton âme est vivante, ô mon seigneur le roi, il est impossible d’aller à droite ou à gauche de tout ce que dit mon seigneur le roi. Oui, c’est ton serviteur Joab qui m’a donné des ordres et qui a mis toutes ces paroles dans la bouche de ta servante.
20 To bring about this form of speech hath thy servant Joab done this thing: and my lord [is] wise, according to the wisdom of an angel of God, to know all [things] that [are] on the earth.
C’est pour détourner l’aspect de la chose que ton serviteur Joab a fait cela; mais mon seigneur est aussi sage qu’un ange de Dieu, pour connaître tout ce qui se passe sur la terre. »
21 And the king said to Joab, Behold now, I have done this thing: go therefore, bring the young man Absalom again.
Le roi dit à Joab: « Voici, je vais faire cela; va donc, ramène le jeune homme Absalom. »
22 And Joab fell to the ground on his face, and bowed himself, and thanked the king: and Joab said, To-day thy servant knoweth that I have found grace in thy sight, my lord, O king, in that the king hath fulfilled the request of his servant.
Joab tomba la face contre terre et se prosterna, et il bénit le roi; puis Joab dit: « Ton serviteur connaît aujourd’hui que j’ai trouvé grâce à tes yeux, ô roi, mon seigneur, puisque le roi agit selon la parole de son serviteur. »
23 So Joab arose and went to Geshur, and brought Absalom to Jerusalem.
Et Joab, s’étant levé, alla à Gessur, et il ramena Absalom à Jérusalem.
24 And the king said, Let him turn to his own house, and let him not see my face. So Absalom returned to his own house, and saw not the king's face.
Mais le roi dit: « Qu’il se retire dans sa maison, et qu’il ne voie pas ma face. » Et Absalom se retira dans sa maison, et il ne vit pas la face du roi.
25 But in all Israel there was none to be so much praised as Absalom for his beauty: from the sole of his foot even to the crown of his head there was no blemish in him.
Dans tout Israël il n’y avait pas un homme aussi renommé qu’Absalom pour sa beauté; de la plante du pied au sommet de la tête, il n’y avait en lui aucun défaut.
26 And when he polled his head, (for it was at every year's end that he polled [it]: because [the hair] was heavy on him, therefore he polled it: ) he weighed the hair of his head at two hundred shekels after the king's weight.
Lorsqu’il se rasait la tête, — c’était chaque année qu’il le faisait; lorsque sa chevelure lui pesait, il la rasait — le poids des cheveux de sa tête était de deux cents sicles, poids du roi.
27 And to Absalom there were born three sons, and one daughter, whose name [was] Tamar: she was a woman of a fair countenance.
Il naquit à Absalom trois fils et une fille nommée Thamar; c’était une femme de belle figure.
28 So Absalom dwelt two full years in Jerusalem, and saw not the king's face.
Absalom demeura deux ans à Jérusalem sans voir la face du roi.
29 Therefore Absalom sent for Joab, that he might send him to the king; but he would not come to him: and when he sent again the second time, he would not come.
Absalom fit demander Joab pour l’envoyer vers le roi; mais Joab ne voulut pas venir vers lui. Absalom le fit demander une seconde fois, et il ne voulut pas venir.
30 Therefore he said to his servants, See, Joab's field is near mine, and he hath barley there; go and set it on fire. And Absalom's servants set the field on fire.
Absalom dit alors à ses serviteurs: « Voyez, le champ de Joab est à côté du mien; il s’y trouve de l’orge pour lui: allez-y mettre le feu. » Et les serviteurs d’Absalom mirent le feu au champ.
31 Then Joab arose, and came to Absalom, to [his] house, and said to him, Why have thy servants set my field on fire?
Joab se leva et, étant venu vers Absalom dans sa maison, il lui dit: « Pourquoi tes serviteurs ont-ils mis le feu au champ qui m’appartient? »
32 And Absalom answered Joab, Behold, I sent to thee, saying, Come hither, that I may send thee to the king, to say, Why am I come from Geshur? it [had been] good for me [had I been] there still: now therefore let me see the king's face; and if there is [any] iniquity in me, let him kill me.
Absalom répondit à Joab: « Voilà que je t’avais envoyé dire: Viens ici et je t’enverrai vers le roi afin que tu lui dises: Pourquoi suis-je revenu de Gessur? Il vaudrait mieux pour moi que j’y fusse encore. Maintenant, je veux voir la face du roi; et, s’il y a quelque iniquité en moi, qu’il me fasse mourir! »
33 So Joab came to the king, and told him: and when he had called for Absalom, he came to the king, and bowed himself on his face to the ground before the king: and the king kissed Absalom.
Joab alla trouver le roi et lui rapporta ces choses. Et il appela Absalom, et celui-ci vint auprès du roi et se prosterna la face contre terre devant le roi. Et le roi baisa Absalom.
