2 Samuel 11
1 And it came to pass, after the year had expired, at the time when kings go forth [to battle], that David sent Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel; and they destroyed the children of Ammon, and destroyed Rabbah. But David tarried still at Jerusalem.
Or avvenne che l’anno seguente, nel tempo in cui i re sogliono andare alla guerra, Davide mandò Joab con la sua gente e con tutto Israele a devastare il paese dei figliuoli di Ammon e ad assediare Rabba; ma Davide rimase a Gerusalemme.
2 And it came to pass in an evening, that David arose from off his bed, and walked upon the roof of the king's house: and from the roof he saw a woman washing herself; and the woman [was] very beautiful to look upon.
Una sera Davide, alzatosi dal suo letto, si mise a passeggiare sulla terrazza del palazzo reale; e dalla terrazza vide una donna che si bagnava; e la donna era bellissima.
3 And David sent and inquired after the woman. And [one] said, [Is] not this Bath-sheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?
Davide mandò ad informarsi chi fosse la donna; e gli fu detto: “E’ Bath-Sheba, figliuola di Eliam, moglie di Uria, lo Hitteo”.
4 And David sent messengers, and took her; and she came in to him, and he lay with her; for she was purified from her uncleanness: and she returned to her house.
E Davide inviò gente a prenderla; ed ella venne da lui, ed egli si giacque con lei, che si era purificata della sua contaminazione; poi ella se ne tornò a casa sua.
5 And the woman conceived, and sent and told David, and said, I [am] with child.
La donna rimase incinta, e lo fece sapere a Davide, dicendo: “Sono incinta”.
6 And David sent to Joab, [saying], Send me Uriah the Hittite. And Joab sent Uriah to David.
Allora Davide fece dire a Joab: “Mandami Uria, lo Hitteo”. E Joab mandò Uria da Davide.
7 And when Uriah had come to him, David inquired [of him] how Joab did, and how the people did, and how the war prospered.
Come Uria fu giunto da Davide, questi gli chiese come stessero Joab ed il popolo, e come andasse la guerra.
8 And David said to Uriah, Go down to thy house, and wash thy feet. And Uriah departed out of the king's house, and there followed him a mess [of meat] from the king.
Poi Davide disse ad Uria: “Scendi a casa tua e làvati i piedi”. Uria uscì dal palazzo reale, e gli furon portate appresso delle vivande del re.
9 But Uriah slept at the door of the king's house with all the servants of his lord, and went not down to his house.
Ma Uria dormì alla porta del palazzo del re con tutti i servi del suo signore, e non scese a casa sua.
10 And when they had told David, saying, Uriah went not down to his house, David said to Uriah, Camest thou not from [thy] journey? why [then] didst thou not go down to thy house?
E come ciò fu riferito a Davide e gli fu detto: “Uria non è sceso a casa sua”, Davide disse ad Uria: “Non vieni tu di viaggio? Perché dunque non sei sceso a casa tua?”
11 And Uriah said to David, The ark, and Israel, and Judah, abide in tents; and my lord Joab, and the servants of my lord are encamped in the open fields; shall I then go into my house, to eat and to drink, and to lie with my wife? [as] thou livest, and [as] thy soul liveth, I will not do this thing.
Uria rispose a Davide: “L’arca, Israele e Giuda abitano sotto le tende, Joab mio signore e i suoi servi sono accampati in aperta campagna, e io me n’entrerei in casa mia per mangiare e bere e per dormire con mia moglie? Com’è vero che tu vivi e che vive l’anima tua, io non farò tal cosa!”
12 And David said to Uriah, Tarry here to-day also, and to-morrow I will let thee depart. So Uriah abode in Jerusalem that day and the morrow.
E Davide disse ad Uria: “Trattienti qui anche oggi, e domani ti lascerò partire”. Così Uria rimase a Gerusalemme quel giorno ed il seguente.
13 And when David had called him, he ate and drank before him; and he made him drunk: and at evening he went out to lie on his bed with the servants of his lord, but went not down to his house.
E Davide lo invitò a mangiare e a bere con sé; e lo ubriacò; e la sera Uria uscì per andarsene a dormire sul suo lettuccio coi servi del suo signore, ma non scese a casa sua.
14 And it came to pass in the morning, that David wrote a letter to Joab, and sent [it] by the hand of Uriah.
La mattina seguente, Davide scrisse una lettera a Joab, e gliela mandò per le mani d’Uria.
15 And he wrote in the letter, saying, Set ye Uriah in the front of the hottest battle, and retire ye from him, that he may be smitten, and die.
Nella lettera avea scritto così: “Ponete Uria al fronte, dove più ferve la mischia; poi ritiratevi da lui, perch’egli resti colpito e muoia”.
16 And it came to pass, when Joab observed the city, that he assigned Uriah to a place where he knew that valiant men [were].
Joab dunque, assediando la città, pose Uria nel luogo dove sapeva che il nemico avea degli uomini valorosi.
17 And the men of the city went out, and fought with Joab: and there fell [some] of the people of the servants of David; and Uriah the Hittite died also.
Gli uomini della città fecero una sortita e attaccarono Joab; parecchi del popolo, della gente di Davide, caddero, e perì anche Uria lo Hitteo.
18 Then Joab sent and told David all the things concerning the war;
Allora Joab inviò un messo a Davide per fargli sapere tutte le cose ch’erano avvenute nella battaglia;
19 And charged the messenger, saying, When thou hast made an end of telling the matters of the war to the king,
e diede al messo quest’ordine: “Quando avrai finito di raccontare al re tutto quello ch’è successo nella battaglia,
20 And if the king's wrath shall rise, and he shall say to thee, Why approached ye so nigh to the city for the fight? knew ye not that they would shoot from the wall?
se il re va in collera, e ti dice: Perché vi siete accostati così alla città per dar battaglia? Non sapevate voi che avrebbero tirato di sulle mura?
21 Who smote Abimelech the son of Jerubbesheth? did not a woman cast a piece of a millstone upon him from the wall, that he died in Thebez? why went ye nigh the wall? then say thou, Thy servant Uriah the Hittite is dead also.
Chi fu che uccise Abimelec, figliuolo di Jerubbesheth? Non fu ella una donna che gli gettò addosso un pezzo di macina dalle mura, si ch’egli morì a Thebets? Perché vi siete accostati così alle mura? tu digli allora: Il tuo servo Uria lo Hitteo è morto anch’egli”.
22 So the messenger went, and came and showed David all that Joab had sent him for.
Il messo dunque partì; e, giunto, riferì a Davide tutto quello che Joab l’aveva incaricato di dire.
23 And the messenger said to David, Surely the men prevailed against us, and came out to us into the field, and we were upon them even to the entrance of the gate.
Il messo disse a Davide: “I nemici avevano avuto del vantaggio su di noi, e avean fatto una sortita contro di noi nella campagna; ma noi fummo loro addosso fino alla porta della città;
24 And the shooters shot from off the wall upon thy servants: and [some] of the king's servants are dead, and thy servant Uriah the Hittite is dead also.
allora gli arcieri tirarono sulla tua gente di sulle mura, e parecchi della gente del re perirono, e Uria lo Hitteo, tuo servo, perì anch’egli”.
25 Then David said to the messenger, Thus shalt thou say to Joab, Let not this thing displease thee, for the sword devoureth one as well as another: make thy battle more strong against the city, and overthrow it: and encourage thou him.
Allora Davide disse al messo: “Dirai così a Joab: Non ti dolga quest’affare; poiché la spada or divora l’uno ed ora l’altro; rinforza l’attacco contro la città, e distruggila. E tu fagli coraggio”.
26 And when the wife of Uriah heard that Uriah her husband was dead, she mourned for her husband.
Quando la moglie di Uria udì che Uria suo marito era morto, lo pianse;
27 And when the mourning was past, David sent and brought her to his house, and she became his wife, and bore him a son. But the thing that David had done displeased the LORD.
e finito che ella ebbe il lutto, Davide la mandò a cercare e l’accolse in casa sua. Ella divenne sua moglie, e gli partorì un figliuolo. Ma quello che Davide avea fatto dispiacque all’Eterno.
