2 Chronicles 25
1 Amaziah [was] twenty and five years old [when] he began to reign, and he reigned twenty and nine years in Jerusalem. And his mother's name [was] Jehoaddan of Jerusalem.
Amasias avait vingt-cinq ans lorsqu’il commença à régner, et il régna vingt-neuf ans à Jérusalem: le nom de sa mère était Joadan de Jérusalem.
2 And he did [that which was] right in the sight of the LORD, but not with a perfect heart.
Et il fit le bien en la présence du Seigneur, mais non avec un cœur parfait.
3 Now it came to pass, when the kingdom was established to him, that he slew his servants that had killed the king his father.
Et, lorsqu’il vit son empire affermi, il fit égorger les serviteurs qui avaient tué le roi son père;
4 But he slew not their children, but [did] as [it is] written in the law of the book of Moses, where the LORD commanded, saying, The fathers shall not die for the children, neither shall the children die for the fathers, but every man shall die for his own sin.
Mais leurs enfants, il ne les tua point, comme il est écrit dans le Livre de la loi de Moïse, où le Seigneur a ordonné, disant: Des pères ne seront pas mis à mort pour des enfants, ni des enfants pour des pères; mais chacun mourra pour son péché.
5 Moreover, Amaziah assembled Judah, and made them captains over thousands, and captains over hundreds, according to the houses of [their] fathers, throughout all Judah and Benjamin: and he numbered them from twenty years old and above, and found them three hundred thousand choice [men], [able] to go forth to war, that could handle spear and shield.
Amasias assembla donc Juda, et il les établit par familles, tribuns et centurions dans tout Juda et Benjamin; et il les recensa depuis vingt ans et au-dessus, et il trouva trois cent mille jeunes hommes qui pouvaient sortir pour les combats, et porter une lance et un bouclier.
6 He hired also a hundred thousand mighty men of valor out of Israel for a hundred talents of silver.
Il engagea aussi cent mille hommes robustes d’Israël au prix de cent talents d’argent.
7 But there came a man of God to him, saying, O king, let not the army of Israel go with thee; for the LORD [is] not with Israel, [to wit], [with] all the children of Ephraim.
Or un homme de Dieu vint vers lui, et dit: ô roi, que l’armée d’Israël ne sorte pas avec vous; car Dieu n’est point avec Israël, ni avec les enfants d’Ephraïm.
8 But if thou wilt go, do [it], be strong for the battle: God will make thee fall before the enemy: for God hath power to help, and to cast down.
Que si vous croyez que la guerre consiste dans la force de l’armée, Dieu fera que vous serez vaincu par vos ennemis; car c’est à Dieu à secourir et à mettre en fuite.
9 And Amaziah said to the man of God, But what shall we do for the hundred talents which I have given to the army of Israel? And the man of God answered, The LORD is able to give thee much more than this.
Et Amasias demanda à l’homme de Dieu: Que sera-t-il donc fait des cent talents que j’ai donnés aux soldats d’Israël? Et l’homme de Dieu lui répondit: Le Seigneur a de quoi pouvoir vous donner beaucoup plus que ces cent talents.
10 Then Amaziah separated them, [to wit], the army that had come to him out of Ephraim, to go home again: wherefore their anger was greatly kindled against Judah, and they returned home in great anger.
C’est pourquoi Amasias sépara l’armée qui lui était venue d’Ephraïm, afin qu’elle retournât en son lieu; mais c’est violemment irritées contre Juda que ces troupes retournèrent dans leur contrée.
11 And Amaziah strengthened himself, and led forth his people, and went to the valley of salt, and smote of the children of Seir ten thousand.
Or Amasias, conduisit son peuple résolument; il alla dans la vallée des Salines, et il battit les enfants de Séir au nombre de dix mille.
12 And [other] ten thousand [left] alive the children of Judah carried away captive, and brought them to the top of the rock, and cast them down from the top of the rock, that they were all broken in pieces.
Et les enfants de Juda prirent dix autres mille hommes; ils les amenèrent sur le pic du rocher, et les précipitèrent du haut en bas, et tous furent brisés.
13 But the soldiers of the army whom Amaziah sent back, that they should not go with him to battle, fell upon the cities of Judah, from Samaria even to Beth-horon, and smote three thousand of them, and took much spoil.
Mais l’armée qu’Amasias avait renvoyée, afin qu’elle n’allât pas avec lui au combat, se répandit dans les villes de Juda, depuis Samarie jusqu’à Béthoron, et, trois mille hommes tués, elle enleva un grand butin.
14 Now it came to pass, after that Amaziah had come from the slaughter of the Edomites, that he brought the gods of the children of Seir, and set them up [to be] his gods, and bowed himself before them, and burned incense to them.
Or Amasias, après avoir taillé en pièces les Iduméens et avoir emporté les dieux des enfants de Séir, en fit des dieux pour lui-même; il les adorait, et leur brûlait de l’encens.
15 Wherefore the anger of the LORD was kindled against Amaziah, and he sent to him a prophet, who said to him, Why hast thou sought after the gods of the people, which could not deliver their own people out of thy hand?
C’est pourquoi le Seigneur, irrité contre Amasias, envoya vers lui un prophète pour lui dire: Pourquoi avez-vous adoré les dieux qui n’ont pas délivré leur peuple de votre main?
16 And it came to pass, as he talked with him, that [the king] said to him, Art thou made of the king's council? forbear? why shouldst thou be smitten? Then the prophet forbore, and said, I know that God hath determined to destroy thee, because thou hast done this, and hast not hearkened to my counsel.
Comme le prophète disait ces choses, Amasias lui répondit: Est-ce que tu es conseiller du roi? Tais-toi, de peur que je ne te tue. Alors le prophète se retirant: Je sais, dit-il, que Dieu a résolu de vous tuer, parce que vous avez fait ce mal, et que de plus vous n’avez pas voulu acquiescer à mes conseils.
17 Then Amaziah king of Judah took advice, and sent to Joash, the son of Jehoahaz, the son of Jehu, king of Israel, saying, Come, let us see one another in the face.
Ainsi Amasias, roi de Juda, ayant pris une détestable résolution, envoya vers Joas, fils de Joachaz, fils de Jéhu, roi d’Israël, disant: Venez, et voyons-nous mutuellement.
18 And Joash king of Israel sent to Amaziah king of Judah, saying, The thistle that [was] in Lebanon sent to the cedar that [was] in Lebanon, saying, Give thy daughter to my son for a wife: and there passed by a wild beast that [was] in Lebanon, and trod down the thistle.
Mais Joas renvoya les messagers, disant: Le chardon qui est au Liban envoya vers le cèdre du Liban, disant: Donnez votre fille à mon fils pour femme; et voilà que les bêtes qui étaient dans la forêt du Liban passèrent et foulèrent aux pieds le chardon.
19 Thou sayest, Lo, thou hast smitten the Edomites; and thy heart lifteth thee up to boast: abide now at home; why shouldst thou meddle to [thy] hurt, that thou shouldst fall, [even] thou, and Judah with thee?
Vous avez dit: J’ai battu Edom, et c’est pourquoi votre cœur s’élève jusqu’à l’orgueil. Demeurez en votre maison: pourquoi provoquez-vous un malheur pour que vous tombiez, et vous et Juda avec vous?
20 But Amaziah would not hear; for it [came] from God, that he might deliver them into the hand [of their enemies], because they sought after the gods of Edom.
Amasias ne voulut pas l’écouter, parce que la volonté du Seigneur était qu’il fût livré dans les mains des ennemis, à cause des dieux d’Edom.
21 So Joash the king of Israel went up; and they saw one another in the face, [both] he and Amaziah king of Judah, at Beth-shemesh, which [belongeth] to Judah.
Joas, roi d’Israël, monta donc, et les deux armées se mirent en présence. Or Amasias, roi de Juda, était campé à Bethsamès de Juda;
22 And Judah was defeated before Israel, and they fled every man to his tent.
Et Juda tomba devant Israël, et s’enfuit dans ses tabernacles.
23 And Joash the king of Israel took Amaziah king of Judah, the son of Joash, the son of Jehoahaz, at Beth-shemesh, and brought him to Jerusalem, and broke down the wall of Jerusalem from the gate of Ephraim to the corner gate, four hundred cubits.
Pour Amasias, roi de Juda, fils de Joas, fils de Joachaz, Joas, roi d’Israël, le prit dans Bethsamès, et l’emmena à Jérusalem; et il détruisit aussi son mur, depuis la porte d’Ephraïm jusqu’à la porte de l’angle, espace de quatre cents coudées.
24 And [he took] all the gold and the silver, and all the vessels that were found in the house of God with Obed-edom, and the treasures of the king's house, the hostages also, and returned to Samaria.
Il emporta encore tout l’or et l’argent et tous les vases qu’il avait trouvés dans la maison de Dieu et chez Obédédom, et même dans les trésors de la maison royale; il ramena aussi à Samarie les fils des otages.
25 And Amaziah the son of Joash king of Judah, lived after the death of Joash, son of Jehoahaz king of Israel, fifteen years.
Or Amasias, fils de Joas, roi de Juda, vécut quinze ans après que fut mort Joas, fils de Joachaz, roi d’Israël.
26 Now the rest of the acts of Amaziah, first and last, behold, [are] they not written in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel?
Mais le reste des actions d’Amasias, des premières et des dernières, est écrit dans le Livre des rois de Juda et d’Israël.
27 Now after the time that Amaziah turned away from following the LORD, they made a conspiracy against him in Jerusalem; and he fled to Lachish: but they sent to Lachish after him, and slew him there.
Après qu’Amasias eut abandonné le Seigneur, on lui tendit des embûches dans Jérusalem; et, comme il se fut enfui à Lachis, on envoya, et on le tua là.
28 And they brought him upon horses, and buried him with his fathers in the city of Judah.
Et le rapportant sur les chevaux, on l’ensevelit avec ses pères dans la cité de David.
