1 Samuel 8
1 And it came to pass, when Samuel was old, that he made his sons judges over Israel.
Khi đã già, Sa-mu-ên bổ nhiệm các con mình làm phán quan Ít-ra-ên.
2 Now the name of his first-born was Joel; and the name of his second, Abiah: [they were] judges in Beer-sheba.
Tên người con trưởng là Giô-ên; người con thứ là A-bi-gia. Họ làm phán quan tại Bê-e-sê-ba.
3 And his sons walked not in his ways, but turned aside after lucre, and took bribes, and perverted judgment.
Nhưng họ không theo gương cha mình, họ tham lợi, ăn hối lộ, và bóp méo công lý.
4 Then all the elders of Israel assembled, and came to Samuel to Ramah,
Cuối cùng, các trưởng lão Ít-ra-ên cùng nhau đến Ra-ma hội kiến với Sa-mu-ên,
5 And said to him, Behold, thou art old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways: now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.
và thỉnh cầu: “Ông đã cao tuổi, còn các con ông không theo gương ông. Vậy xin ông chỉ định một người làm vua để cai trị chúng tôi cũng như các nước khác.”
6 But the thing displeased Samuel, when they said, Give us a king to judge us: and Samuel prayed to the LORD.
Những lời họ nói làm Sa-mu-ên buồn lòng, vì họ muốn có vua để cai trị họ. Ông đem việc trình lên Chúa Hằng Hữu.
7 And the LORD said to Samuel, Hearken to the voice of the people in all that they say to thee: for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me, that I should not reign over them.
Chúa Hằng Hữu phán: “Con cứ thực hiện mọi lời dân thỉnh cầu. Không phải họ từ khước con, nhưng họ từ khước Ta, là Vua họ.
8 According to all the works which they have done since the day that I brought them out of Egypt even to this day, by which they have forsaken me, and served other gods, so do they also to thee.
Từ ngày Ta đem họ ra khỏi Ai Cập đến nay, họ vẫn đối xử với Ta như thế, họ chối bỏ Ta để thờ các thần khác. Nay họ cũng đối xử với con cách ấy.
9 Now therefore hearken to their voice: yet protest solemnly to them, and show them the manner of the king that will reign over them.
Thế nên con cứ làm theo lời họ xin, chỉ cần long trọng cảnh cáo, cho họ thấy trước cách thức vua cai trị sẽ ra làm sao.”
10 And Samuel told all the words of the LORD to the people that asked of him a king.
Vậy Sa-mu-ên lặp lại mọi lời cảnh cáo của Chúa Hằng Hữu cho dân chúng nghe vì đã đòi Ngài cho một vua.
11 And he said, This will be the manner of the king that shall reign over you: He will take your sons, and appoint [them] for himself, for his chariots, and [to be] his horsemen; and [some] will run before his chariots.
Ông nói: “Đây là cách vua cai trị dân: Vua sẽ bắt con của anh chị em làm người đánh xe, làm kỵ binh hoặc để chạy trước xe vua.
12 And he will appoint him captains over thousands, and captains over fifties; and [will set them] to till his ground, and to reap his harvest, and to make his instruments of war, and instruments of his chariots.
Có người sẽ được làm sĩ quan chỉ huy một nghìn binh sĩ hay năm mươi binh sĩ, nhưng cũng có người phải đi cày ruộng, gặt hái, rèn khí giới và dụng cụ xe cộ cho vua.
13 And he will take your daughters [to be] confectioneries, and [to be] cooks, and [to be] bakers.
Vua sẽ bắt con gái anh chị em làm bếp, làm bánh, pha chế nước hoa.
14 And he will take your fields, and your vineyards, and your olive-yards, [even] the best [of them], and give [them] to his servants.
Đồng ruộng, vườn nho, vườn ô-liu tốt nhất của anh chị em sẽ bị vua lấy để cấp cho đầy tớ mình.
15 And he will take the tenth of your seed, and of your vineyards, and give to his officers, and to his servants.
Vua cũng lấy một phần mười ngũ cốc và nho của anh chị em cho các quan và bầy tôi của vua.
16 And he will take your men-servants, and your maid-servants, and your most choice young men, and your asses, and put [them] to his work.
Các đầy tớ nam nữ của anh chị em, cũng như các thanh thiếu niên ưu tú nhất sẽ bị vua trưng dụng, cho đến bầy lừa của anh chị em cũng bị đem đi làm việc cho vua.
17 He will take the tenth of your sheep: and ye will be his servants.
Anh chị em phải nộp phần mười đàn chiên và chính mình cũng thành nô lệ của vua.
18 And ye shall cry out in that day because of your king which ye shall have chosen for yourselves; and the LORD will not hear you in that day.
Có ngày anh chị em sẽ phải kêu khóc vì vua mà anh chị em đã chọn, nhưng lúc ấy Chúa Hằng Hữu sẽ không giúp anh chị em đâu.”
19 Nevertheless, the people refused to obey the voice of Samuel; and they said, No; but we will have a king over us;
Dù vậy, dân chúng không chịu nghe lời Sa-mu-ên, nhất quyết đòi hỏi: “Dù sao, chúng tôi cũng phải có vua,
20 That we also may be like all the nations; and that our king may judge us, and go out before us, and fight our battles.
vì chúng tôi muốn được như các nước khác; vua sẽ cai trị chúng tôi và lãnh đạo chúng tôi ra trận.”
21 And Samuel heard all the words of the people, and he rehearsed them in the ears of the LORD.
Nghe họ nói xong, Sa-mu-ên đem thưa lại với Chúa Hằng Hữu,
22 And the LORD said to Samuel, Hearken to their voice, and make them a king. And Samuel said to the men of Israel, Go ye every man to his city.
Ngài phán: “Hãy thực hiện điều họ xin và lập cho họ một vua.” Vậy, Sa-mu-ên đồng ý và cho mọi người trở về nhà.
