1 Kings 17
1 And Elijah the Tishbite [who was] of the inhabitants of Gilead, said to Ahab, [As] the LORD God of Israel liveth, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, but according to my word.
Alors Elie Tisbite, [l'un de ceux] qui s'étaient habitués à Galaad, dit à Achab: L'Eternel le Dieu d'Israël, en la présence duquel je me tiens, est vivant, qu'il n'y aura ces années-ci ni rosée ni pluie, sinon à ma parole.
2 And the word of the LORD came to him, saying,
Puis la parole de l'Eternel fut adressée à Elie, en disant:
3 Depart hence, and turn thee eastward, and hide thyself by the brook Cherith, that [is] before Jordan.
Va-t'en d'ici, et tourne-toi vers l'Orient, et te cache au torrent de Kérith, qui est vis-à-vis du Jourdain.
4 And it shall be, [that] thou shalt drink of the brook; and I have commanded the ravens to feed thee there.
Tu boiras du torrent, et j'ai commandé aux corbeaux de t'y nourrir.
5 So he went and did according to the word of the LORD: for he went and dwelt by the brook Cherith, that [is] before Jordan.
Il partit donc, et fit selon la parole de l'Eternel; il s'en alla, dis-je, et demeura au torrent de Kérith, vis-à-vis du Jourdain.
6 And the ravens brought him bread and flesh in the morning, and bread and flesh in the evening; and he drank of the brook.
Et les corbeaux lui apportaient du pain et de la chair le matin, et du pain et de la chair le soir, et il buvait du torrent.
7 And it came to pass after a while, that the brook dried up, because there had been no rain in the land.
Mais il arriva qu'au bout de quelques jours le torrent tarit; parce qu'il n'y avait point eu de pluie au pays.
8 And the word of the LORD came to him, saying,
Alors la parole de l'Eternel lui fut adressée, en disant:
9 Arise, go to Zarephath, which [belongeth] to Zidon, and dwell there: behold, I have commanded a widow woman there to sustain thee.
Lève-toi, [et] t'en va à Sarepta, qui est près de Sidon, et demeure-là. Voici, j'ai commandé là à une femme veuve de t'y nourrir.
10 So he arose and went to Zarephath. And when he came to the gate of the city, behold, the widow woman [was] there gathering sticks: and he called to her, and said, Bring me, I pray thee, a little water in a vessel, that I may drink.
Il se leva donc, et s'en alla à Sarepta; et comme il fut arrivé à la porte de la ville, voilà, une femme veuve était là, qui amassait du bois; et il l'appela, et lui dit: Je te prie, apporte-moi un peu d'eau dans un vaisseau, et que je boive.
11 And as she was going to bring [it], he called to her, and said, Bring me, I pray thee, a morsel of bread in thy hand.
Elle s'en alla pour en prendre; et il la rappela, et lui dit: Je te prie, prends en ta main une bouchée de pain pour moi.
12 And she said, [As] the LORD thy God liveth, I have not a cake, but a handful of meal in a barrel, and a little oil in a cruse: and behold, I [am] gathering two sticks, that I may go in and dress it for me and my son, that we may eat it, and die.
Mais elle répondit: L'Eternel ton Dieu est vivant, que je n'ai aucun gâteau; je n'ai que pleine ma main de farine dans une cruche, et un peu d'huile dans une fiole, et voici j'amasse deux bûches, puis je m'en irai, et je l'apprêterai pour moi et pour mon fils, et nous le mangerons; et après cela nous mourrons.
13 And Elijah said to her, Fear not; go [and] do as thou hast said: but make me of it a little cake first, and bring [it] to me, and afterward make for thee and for thy son.
Et Elie lui dit: Ne crains point; va, fais comme tu dis; mais fais m'en premièrement un petit gâteau, et apporte-le-moi, et puis tu en feras pour toi et pour ton fils.
14 For thus saith the LORD God of Israel, The barrel of meal shall not waste, neither shall the cruse of oil fail, until the day [that] the LORD sendeth rain upon the earth.
Car ainsi a dit l'Eternel le Dieu d'Israël: La farine qui est dans la cruche, ne défaudra point, et l'huile qui est dans la fiole ne défaudra point, jusqu'à ce que l'Eternel donne de la pluie sur la terre.
15 And she went and did according to the saying of Elijah: and she, and he, and her house, did eat [many] days.
Elle s'en alla donc, et fit selon la parole d'Elie; et elle mangea, lui, et la famille de cette femme durant plusieurs jours.
16 [And] the barrel of meal wasted not, neither did the cruse of oil fail, according to the word of the LORD, which he spoke by Elijah.
La farine de la cruche ne manqua point, et l'huile de la fiole ne tarit point, selon la parole que l'Eternel avait proférée par le moyen d'Elie.
17 And it came to pass after these things [that] the son of the woman, the mistress of the house, fell sick; and his sickness was so severe, that there was no breath left in him.
Après ces choses il arriva que le fils de la femme, maîtresse de la maison, devint malade; et la maladie fut si forte, qu'il expira.
18 And she said to Elijah, What have I to do with thee, O thou man of God? art thou come to me to call my sin to remembrance, and to slay my son?
Et elle dit à Elie: Qu'y a-t-il entre moi et toi, homme de Dieu? Es-tu venu chez moi pour rappeler en mémoire mon iniquité, et pour faire mourir mon fils?
19 And he said to her, Give me thy son. And he took him out of her bosom, and carried him up into a loft, where he abode, and laid him upon his own bed.
Et il lui dit: Donne-moi ton fils; et il le prit du sein de cette femme, et le porta dans la chambre haute où il demeurait, et le coucha sur son lit.
20 And he cried to the LORD, and said, O LORD my God, hast thou also brought evil upon the widow with whom I sojourn, by slaying her son?
Puis il cria à l'Eternel, et dit: Eternel mon Dieu! as-tu donc tellement affligé cette veuve avec laquelle je demeure, que tu lui aies fait mourir son fils?
21 And he stretched himself upon the child three times, and cried to the LORD, and said, O LORD my God, I pray thee, let this child's soul come into him again.
Et il s'étendit tout de son long sur l'enfant par trois fois, et cria à l'Eternel, et dit: Eternel mon Dieu! je te prie que l'âme de cet enfant r'entre dans lui.
22 And the LORD heard the voice of Elijah; and the soul of the child came into him again, and he revived.
Et l'Eternel exauça la voix d'Elie, et l'âme de l'enfant r'entra dans lui, et il recouvra la vie.
23 And Elijah took the child, and brought him down from the chamber into the house, and delivered him to his mother: and Elijah said, See, thy son liveth.
Et Elie prit l'enfant, et le fit descendre de la chambre haute dans la maison, et le donna à sa mère, en lui disant: Regarde, ton fils vit.
24 And the woman said to Elijah, Now by this I know that thou [art] a man of God, [and] that the word of the LORD in thy mouth [is] truth.
Et la femme dit à Elie: Je connais maintenant, que tu es un homme de Dieu, et que la parole de l'Eternel, qui est dans ta bouche, est la vérité.
