Proverbs 18
1 Through desire a man, having separated himself, seeketh and intermeddleth with all wisdom.
Wer sich absondert, pflegt seine Liebhaberei und wehrt sich gegen alles, was heilsam ist.
2 A fool hath no delight in understanding, but that his heart may discover itself.
Einem Toren ist es nicht ums Lernen zu tun, sondern um kundzumachen, was er weiß.
3 When the wicked cometh, then cometh also contempt, and with ignominy reproach.
Wo der Gottlose hinkommt, da stellt sich auch Verachtung ein und mit der Schande die Schmach.
4 The words of a man’s mouth are as deep waters, and the wellspring of wisdom as a flowing brook.
Die Worte eines Mannes sind tiefe Wasser, ein sprudelnder Bach, eine Quelle der Weisheit.
5 It is not good to accept the person of the wicked, to overthrow the righteous in judgment.
Es ist nicht gut, wenn man die Person des Gottlosen ansieht und den Gerechten im Gericht unterdrückt.
6 A fool’s lips enter into contention, and his mouth calleth for strokes.
Die Reden des Toren stiften Streit, und er schimpft, bis er Schläge kriegt.
7 A fool’s mouth is his destruction, and his lips are the snare of his soul.
Des Toren Mund wird ihm zum Verderben, und seine Lippen sind der Fallstrick seiner Seele.
8 The words of a talebearer are as wounds, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly.
Die Worte des Verleumders sind wie Leckerbissen; man verschlingt sie mit großem Appetit.
9 He also that is slothful in his work is brother to him that is a great waster.
Wer nachlässig ist in seinem Geschäft, der ist ein Bruder des Zerstörers.
10 The name of the LORD is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe.
Der Name des HERRN ist ein festes Schloß; der Gerechte läuft dahin und wird beschirmt.
11 The rich man’s wealth is his strong city, and as an high wall in his own conceit.
Das Gut des Reichen ist seine feste Burg und wie eine hohe Mauer in seiner Einbildung.
12 Before destruction the heart of man is haughty, and before honour is humility.
Vor dem Zusammenbruch erhebt sich des Menschen Herz; aber der Ehre geht Demut voraus.
13 He that answereth a matter before he heareth it, it is folly and shame to him.
Wer antwortet, bevor er gehört hat, dem ist es Torheit und Schande.
14 The spirit of a man will sustain his infirmity; but a wounded spirit who can bear?
Ein männlicher Mut erträgt sein Leiden; wer aber kann einen niedergeschlagenen Geist aufrichten?
15 The heart of the prudent getteth knowledge; and the ear of the wise seeketh knowledge.
Ein verständiges Herz erwirbt Kenntnisse, und das Ohr der Weisen lauscht dem Wissen.
16 A man’s gift maketh room for him, and bringeth him before great men.
Das Geschenk macht dem Menschen Raum und geleitet ihn vor die Großen.
17 He that is first in his own cause seemeth just; but his neighbour cometh and searcheth him.
Wer sich in seinem Prozeß zuerst verteidigen darf, hat Recht; dann kommt der andere und forscht ihn aus.
18 The lot causeth contentions to cease, and parteth between the mighty.
Das Los schlichtet den Hader und entscheidet zwischen den Starken.
19 A brother offended is harder to be won than a strong city: and their contentions are like the bars of a castle.
Ein Bruder, mit dem man sich entzweit hat, ist schwerer zu gewinnen als eine Burg, und Zwistigkeiten sind wie der Riegel an einem Schloß.
20 A man’s belly shall be satisfied with the fruit of his mouth; and with the increase of his lips shall he be filled.
An der Frucht seines Mundes sättigt sich der Mensch, am Ertrag seiner Lippen ißt er sich satt.
21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit of it.
Tod und Leben steht in der Zunge Gewalt; wer sie liebt, ißt ihre Frucht.
22 Whoever findeth a wife findeth a good thing, and obtaineth favour from the LORD.
Wer eine Frau gefunden, der hat etwas Gutes gefunden und Gunst von dem HERRN erlangt.
23 The poor useth entreaties; but the rich answereth roughly.
Der Arme redet bittend; aber der Reiche antwortet grob.
24 A man that hath friends must show himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.
Wer viele Gefährten hat, gefährdet sich selbst; aber es gibt einen Freund, der anhänglicher ist als ein Bruder.
