Matthew 20
1 For the kingdom of heaven is like a man that is an householder, who went out early in the morning to hire labourers into his vineyard.
« Car le royaume des cieux est semblable à un père de famille qui sortit de grand matin afin de louer des ouvriers pour sa vigne.
2 And when he had agreed with the labourers for a penny a day, he sent them into his vineyard.
Étant convenu avec les ouvriers d’un denier par jour, il les envoya à sa vigne.
3 And he went out about the third hour, and saw others standing idle in the marketplace,
Il sortit vers la troisième heure et en vit d’autres qui se tenaient sur la place sans rien faire.
4 And said to them; Go ye also into the vineyard, and whatever is right I will give you. And they went.
Il leur dit: Allez aussi à ma vigne, et je vous donnerai ce qui sera juste;
5 Again he went out about the sixth and ninth hour, and did the same.
et ils y allèrent. Il sortit encore vers la sixième et vers la neuvième heure, et fit la même chose.
6 And about the eleventh hour he went out, and found others standing idle, and saith to them, Why stand ye here all the day idle?
Enfin, étant sorti vers la onzième heure, il en trouva d’autres qui étaient là oisifs, et il leur dit: Pourquoi vous tenez-vous ici toute la journée sans rien faire?
7 They say to him, Because no man hath hired us. He saith to them, Go ye also into the vineyard; and whatever is right, that shall ye receive.
Ils lui répondirent: C’est que personne ne nous a loués. Il leur dit: Allez, vous aussi, à ma vigne.
8 So when evening was come, the lord of the vineyard saith to his steward, Call the labourers, and give them their hire, beginning from the last to the first.
Le soir étant venu, le maître de la vigne dit à son intendant: Appelle les ouvriers et paie leur salaire, en allant des derniers aux premiers.
9 And when they came that were hired about the eleventh hour, they received every man a penny.
Ceux de la onzième heure vinrent et reçurent chacun un denier.
10 But when the first came, they supposed that they should receive more; and they likewise received every man a penny.
Les premiers, venant à leur tour, pensaient qu’ils recevraient davantage; mais ils reçurent aussi chacun un denier.
11 And when they had received it, they murmured against the master of the house,
En le recevant, ils murmuraient contre le père de famille,
12 Saying, These last have worked but one hour, and thou hast made them equal to us, who have borne the burden and heat of the day.
en disant: Ces derniers n’ont travaillé qu’une heure, et tu leur donnes autant qu’à nous, qui avons porté le poids du jour et de la chaleur.
13 But he answered one of them, and said, Friend, I do thee no wrong: didst thou not agree with me for a penny?
Mais le Maître s’adressant à l’un d’eux, répondit: Mon ami, je ne te fais pas d’injustice: n’es-tu pas convenu avec moi d’un denier?
14 Take that which is thine, and go thy way: I will give to this last, even as to thee.
Prends ce qui te revient, et va-t’en. Pour moi, je veux donner à ce dernier autant qu’à toi.
15 Is it not lawful for me to do what I will with my own? Is thy eye evil, because I am good?
Ne m’est-il pas permis de faire de mon bien ce que je veux? Et ton œil sera-t-il mauvais parce que je suis bon?
16 So the last shall be first, and the first last: for many are called, but few chosen.
Ainsi les derniers seront les premiers, et les premiers, les derniers; car il y a beaucoup d’appelés, mais peu d’élus. »
17 And Jesus going up to Jerusalem took the twelve disciples aside in the way, and said to them,
Pendant que Jésus montait à Jérusalem, il prit à part les douze disciples et leur dit en chemin:
18 Behold, we go up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man shall be betrayed to the chief priests and to the scribes, and they shall condemn him to death,
« Voici que nous montons à Jérusalem, et le Fils de l’homme sera livré aux Princes des prêtres et aux scribes. Ils le condamneront à mort,
19 And shall deliver him to the Gentiles to mock, and to scourge, and to crucify him: and the third day he shall rise again.
et le livreront aux Gentils pour être moqué, flagellé et crucifié; et il ressuscitera le troisième jour. »
20 Then came to him the mother of Zebedee’s children with her sons, worshipping him, and desiring a certain thing of him.
Alors la mère des fils de Zébédée s’approcha de Jésus avec ses fils, et se prosterna devant lui pour lui demander quelque chose.
21 And he said to her, What wilt thou? She saith to him, Grant that these my two sons may sit, the one on thy right hand, and the other on the left, in thy kingdom.
Il lui dit: « Que veux-tu? » Elle répondit: « Ordonne que mes deux fils, que voici, soient assis l’un à ta droite, l’autre à ta gauche, dans ton royaume. »
22 But Jesus answered and said, Ye know not what ye ask. Are ye able to drink of the cup that I shall drink of, and to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? They say to him, We are able.
Jésus leur dit: « Vous ne savez pas ce que vous demandez. Pouvez-vous boire le calice que je dois boire? — Nous le pouvons », lui dirent-ils.
23 And he saith to them, Ye shall drink indeed of my cup, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with: but to sit on my right hand, and on my left, is not mine to give, but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared by my Father.
Il leur répondit: « Vous boirez en effet mon calice; quant à être assis à ma droite ou à ma gauche, ce n’est pas à moi de l’accorder; si ce n’est à ceux à qui mon Père l’a préparé. »
24 And when the ten heard it, they were moved with indignation against the two brethren.
Ayant entendu cela, les dix autres furent indignés contre les deux frères.
25 But Jesus called them to him, and said, Ye know that the princes of the Gentiles exercise dominion over them, and they that are great exercise authority upon them.
Mais Jésus les appela et leur dit: « Vous savez que les chefs des nations leur commandent en maîtres, et que les grands exercent l’empire sur elles.
26 But it shall not be so among you: but whoever will be great among you, let him be your minister;
Il n’en sera pas ainsi parmi vous; mais quiconque veut être grand parmi vous, qu’il se fasse votre serviteur;
27 And whoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant:
et quiconque veut être le premier parmi vous, qu’il se fasse votre esclave.
28 Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered to, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.
C’est ainsi que le Fils de l’homme est venu, non pour être servi, mais pour servir, et donner sa vie pour la rançon de la multitude. »
29 And as they departed from Jericho, a great multitude followed him.
Comme ils sortaient de Jéricho, une grande foule le suivit.
30 And, behold, two blind men sitting by the way side, when they heard that Jesus passed by, cried out, saying, Have mercy on us, O Lord, thou Son of David.
Et voilà que deux aveugles, qui étaient assis sur le bord du chemin, entendant dire que Jésus passait, se mirent à crier: « Seigneur, fils de David, ayez pitié de nous. »
31 And the multitude rebuked them, that they should hold their peace: but they cried the more, saying, Have mercy on us, O Lord, thou Son of David.
La foule les gourmandait pour les faire taire; mais ils criaient plus fort: « Seigneur, fils de David, ayez pitié de nous. »
32 And Jesus stood still, and called them, and said, What will ye that I shall do to you?
Jésus, s’étant arrêté, les appela et dit: « Que voulez-vous que je vous fasse? —
33 They say to him, Lord, that our eyes may be opened.
Seigneur, lui dirent-ils, que nos yeux s’ouvrent. »
34 So Jesus had compassion on them, and touched their eyes: and immediately their eyes received sight, and they followed him.
Emu de compassion, Jésus toucha leurs yeux, et aussitôt ils recouvrèrent la vue et le suivirent.
