< John 16 >
1 These things have I spoken to you, that ye should not be offended.
“I have told you these things so that you may be kept from stumbling.
2 They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the time cometh, that whoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service.
They will put you out of the synagogues. Indeed, the time is coming that whoever kills you will think that they are serving God.
3 And these things will they do to you, because they have not known the Father, nor me.
They will do these things to you because they haven’t known the Father nor me.
4 But these things have I told you, that when the time shall come, ye may remember that I told you of them. And these things I said not to you at the beginning, because I was with you.
I have told you these things, so that when the time comes, you may remember that I told you about them. I didn’t tell you these things at the beginning, because I was with you.
5 But now I go to him that sent me; and none of you asketh me, Where goest thou?
“Now I am going to Him who sent me, yet none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’
6 But because I have said these things to you, sorrow hath filled your heart.
Instead, because I have told you these things, sorrow has filled your heart.
7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send him to you.
Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it’s to your advantage that I go away; because if I don’t go away, the Counselor won’t come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you.
8 And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:
When He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:
9 Of sin, because they believe not on me;
of sin, because they don’t believe in me;
10 Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more;
of righteousness, because I go to my Father and you see me no more;
11 Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.
and of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.
12 I have yet many things to say to you, but ye cannot bear them now.
“I still have many things to tell you, but you can’t bear them now.
13 But when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all the truth: for he shall not speak from himself; but whatever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will show you things to come.
However, when the Spirit of truth has come, He will guide you into all truth. He won’t speak on His own, but whatever He hears He will speak. He will announce things to come.
14 He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall show it to you.
He will glorify me, because He will take from what is mine and reveal it to you.
15 All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore I said, that he shall take of mine, and show it to you.
Everything that the Father has is mine. That is why I said that He will take from what is mine and reveal it to you.
16 A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me, because I go to the Father.
“In a little while, you won’t see me; and in a little while longer, you will see me again, because I go to the Father.”
17 Then said some of his disciples among themselves, What is this that he saith to us, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me: and, Because I go to the Father?
Then some of Jesus’ disciples said among themselves, “What does He mean by, ‘In a little while, and you won’t see me; and in a little while longer, you will see me, again;’ and, ‘because I go to the Father’?”
18 They said therefore, What is this that he saith, A little while? we cannot tell what he saith.
They kept asking, “What does He mean by ‘a little while’? We don’t understand what He is saying.”
19 Now Jesus knew that they were desirous to ask him, and said to them, Do ye enquire among yourselves of that which I said, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me?
Now Jesus knew that they wanted to ask Him, and He said to them, “Are you asking yourselves about what I said, ‘In a little while, and you won’t see me; and in a little while longer, you will see me, again’?
20 Verily, verily, I say to you, That ye shall weep and lament, but the world shall rejoice: and ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy.
Most assuredly, I tell you that you will weep and mourn, but the world will rejoice. You will be sad, but your sadness will be turned into joy.
21 A woman when she is in travail hath sorrow, because her hour is come: but as soon as she is delivered of the child, she remembereth no more the anguish, for joy that a man is born into the world.
A woman in labor is in pain because her time has come; but as soon as she has given birth to the baby, she forgets the agony, for joy that a child has been born into the world.
22 And ye now therefore have sorrow: but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man taketh from you.
Therefore you have sorrow now, too, but I will see you again, and your heart will rejoice, and nobody will take your joy away from you.
23 And in that day ye shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say to you, Whatever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it to you.
“In that day you will ask me nothing. Most assuredly, I tell you, whatever you ask the Father in My name He will give you.
24 Until now ye have asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.
Until now you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.
25 These things have I spoken to you in proverbs: but the time cometh, when I shall no more speak to you in proverbs, but I shall show you plainly concerning the Father.
“I’ve told you these things in figures of speech, but the time is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures of speech, but I will tell you plainly about the Father.
26 At that day ye shall ask in my name: and I say not to you, that I will pray the Father for you:
In that day you will ask in my name. I don’t tell you that I’ll ask the Father for you,
27 For the Father himself loveth you, because ye have loved me, and have believed that I came from God.
because the Father Himself loves you, because you have loved me, and have believed that I came forth from God.
28 I came forth from the Father, and am come into the world: again, I leave the world, and go to the Father.
I came forth from the Father and have come into the world. Again, I am leaving the world and going to the Father.”
29 His disciples said to him, Lo, now speakest thou plainly, and speakest no proverb.
His disciples said to Him, “See, now You are speaking plainly, and not in figures of speech!
30 Now are we sure that thou knowest all things, and needest not that any man should ask thee: by this we believe that thou camest from God.
Now we are sure that You know everything, and don’t need anyone to question You. By this we believe that You came forth from God.”
31 Jesus answered them, Do ye now believe?
Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe?
32 Behold, the hour cometh, and, is even now come, that ye shall be scattered, every man to his own, and shall leave me alone: and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me.
The time is coming, and indeed, has now come, that you will be scattered, each to his own home, and you will leave me all alone. Yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me.
33 These things I have spoken to you, that in me ye may have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.
I have told you these things so that you may have peace in me. You will have trouble in the world, but cheer up! I have overcome the world.”
