Jeremiah 47

1 The word of the LORD that came to Jeremiah the prophet against the Philistines, before Pharaoh smote Gaza.

Parole de Yahweh qui fut adressée à Jérémie, le prophète, au sujet des Philistins, avant que Pharaon frappât Gaza.

2 Thus saith the LORD; Behold, waters rise out of the north, and shall be an overflowing flood, and shall overflow the land, and all that is in it; the city, and them that dwell in it: then the men shall cry, and all the inhabitants of the land shall wail.

Ainsi parle Yahweh: Voici que des eaux montent du septentrion; elles deviennent comme un torrent qui déborde, et elles submergeront le pays et ce qu’il contient, la ville et habitants. Les hommes poussent des cris, et tous les habitants du pays se lamentent.

3 At the noise of the stamping of the hoofs of his strong horses, at the rushing of his chariots, and at the rumbling of his wheels, the fathers shall not look back to their children for feebleness of hands;

Au retentissement du sabot de ses coursiers, au fracas de ses chars, au bruit de ses roues, les pères ne se tournent plus vers leurs enfants, tant les mains sont sans force!

4 Because of the day that cometh to lay waste all the Philistines, and to cut off from Tyre and Zidon every helper that remaineth: for the LORD will lay waste the Philistines, the remnant of the country of Caphtor.

C’est à cause du jour qui est venu, où seront détruits tous les Philistins, exterminés tous les derniers alliés de Tyr et de Sidon; car Yahweh va détruire les Philistins, les restes de l’île de Caphtor.

5 Baldness is come upon Gaza; Ashkelon is cut off with the remnant of their valley: how long wilt thou cut thyself?

Gaza est devenue chauve, Ascalon est ruinée, avec la vallée qui les entoure; jusques à quand te feras-tu des incisions?

6 O thou sword of the LORD, how long will it be before thou be quiet? put up thyself into thy scabbard, rest, and be still.

Ah! épée de Yahweh, jusques à quand n’auras-tu pas de repos? Rentre dans ton fourreau, arrête et sois tranquille! —

7 How can it be quiet, seeing the LORD hath given it a charge against Ashkelon, and against the sea shore? there hath he appointed it.

Comment te reposerais-tu, quand Yahweh t’a donné ses ordres? Vers Ascalon et la côte de la mer, c’est là qu’il la dirige.
