Ecclesiastes 6
1 There is an evil which I have seen under the sun, and it is common among men:
Ha um mal que tenho visto debaixo do sol, e mui frequente é entre os homens:
2 A man to whom God hath given riches, wealth, and honour, so that he lacketh nothing for his soul of all that he desireth, yet God giveth him not power to eat of it, but a stranger eateth it: this is vanity, and it is an evil disease.
Um homem a quem Deus deu riquezas, fazenda e honra, e nada lhe falta de tudo quanto a sua alma deseja, e Deus não lhe dá poder para d'ahi comer, antes o estranho lh'o come: tambem isto é vaidade e uma má enfermidade.
3 If a man begetteth an hundred children, and liveth many years, so that the days of his years are many, and his soul is not filled with good, and also that he hath no burial; I say, that an untimely birth is better than he.
Se o homem gerar cem filhos, e viver muitos annos, e os dias dos seus annos forem muitos, porém a sua alma se não fartar do bem, e tambem não tiver sepultura, digo que um aborto é melhor do que elle.
4 For he cometh with vanity, and departeth in darkness, and his name shall be covered with darkness.
Porquanto debalde veiu, e ás trevas se vae, e de trevas se encobre o seu nome.
5 Moreover he hath not seen the sun, nor known any thing: this hath more rest than the other.
E ainda que nunca viu o sol, nem o conheceu, mais descanço tem do que o tal.
6 Yea, though he liveth a thousand years twice told, yet hath he seen no good: do not all go to one place?
E, ainda que vivesse duas vezes mil annos e não visse o bem, porventura todos não vão para um mesmo logar?
7 All the labour of man is for his mouth, and yet the appetite is not filled.
Todo o trabalho do homem é para a sua bocca, e comtudo nunca se enche a sua cubiça.
8 For what hath the wise more than the fool? what hath the poor, that knoweth to walk before the living?
Porque, que mais tem o sabio do que o tolo? e que mais tem o pobre que sabe andar perante os vivos?
9 Better is the sight of the eyes than the wandering of the desire: this is also vanity and vexation of spirit.
Melhor é a vista dos olhos do que o vaguear da cubiça: tambem isto é vaidade, e afflicção de espirito.
10 That which hath been is named already, and it is known that it is man: neither may he contend with him that is mightier than he.
Seja qualquer o que fôr, já o seu nome foi nomeado, e sabe-se que é homem, e que não póde contender com o que é mais forte do que elle.
11 Seeing there are many things that increase vanity, what is man the better?
Na verdade que ha muitas coisas que multiplicam a vaidade: que mais tem o homem com ellas!
12 For who knoweth what is good for man in this life, all the days of his vain life which he spendeth as a shadow? for who can tell a man what shall be after him under the sun?
Porque quem sabe o que é bom n'esta vida para o homem, durante o numero dos dias da vida da sua vaidade, os quaes gasta como sombra? porque quem declarará ao homem que é o que passará depois d'elle debaixo do sol
