Acts 26

1 Then Agrippa said to Paul, Thou art permitted to speak for thyself. Then Paul stretched forth the hand, and answered for himself:

Alors Agrippa dit à Paul: On te permet de parler pour te défendre. Paul aussitôt, étendant la main, commença sa justification.

2 I think myself happy, king Agrippa, because I shall answer for myself this day before thee concerning all the things of which I am accused by the Jews:

Roi Agrippa, je m’estime heureux d’avoir, sur toutes les choses dont les Juifs m’accusent, à me défendre aujourd’hui devant vous,

3 Especially because I know thee to be expert in all customs and questions which are among the Jews: therefore I beseech thee to hear me patiently.

Surtout, vous connaissant toutes choses, et les coutumes et les questions qui existent parmi les Juifs. C’est pourquoi je vous supplie de m’écouter avec patience.

4 My manner of life from my youth, which was at the first among my own nation at Jerusalem, know all the Jews;

Et d’abord ma vie qui, depuis le commencement, s’est passée au milieu de ma nation à Jérusalem, tous les Juifs la connaissent,

5 Who knew me from the beginning, if they would testify, that after the most strict sect of our religion I lived a Pharisee.

Sachant d’avance (s’ils veulent rendre témoignage), que, dès le commencement, j’ai vécu pharisien, selon la secte la mieux fondée de notre religion.

6 And now I stand and am judged for the hope of the promise made by God to our fathers:

Et cependant me voici soumis à un jugement au sujet de l’espérance en la promesse qui a été faite par Dieu à nos pères,

7 To which promise our twelve tribes, earnestly serving God day and night, hope to come. For which hope’s sake, king Agrippa, I am accused by the Jews.

Et dont nos douze tribus, servant Dieu nuit et jour, espèrent entrer en possession. Ainsi, c’est au sujet de cette espérance, ô roi, que je suis accusé par les Juifs.

8 Why should it be thought a thing incredible with you, that God should raise the dead?

Juge-t-on incroyable parmi vous que Dieu ressuscite les morts?

9 I verily thought with myself, that I ought to do many things contrary to the name of Jesus of Nazareth.

Pour moi, j’avais pensé que je devais par mille moyens agir contre le nom de Jésus de Nazareth;

10 Which thing I also did in Jerusalem: and many of the saints did I shut up in prison, having received authority from the chief priests; and when they were put to death, I gave my voice against them.

Et c’est ce que j’ai fait à Jérusalem; j’ai jeté en prison un grand nombre de saints, en ayant reçu le pouvoir des princes des prêtres; et, lorsqu’on les faisait mourir, j’ai donné mon suffrage.

11 And I punished them often in every synagogue, and compelled them to blaspheme; and being exceedingly mad against them, I persecuted them even to foreign cities.

Et parcourant souvent toutes les synagogues pour les tourmenter, je les forçais de blasphémer; et, de plus en plus furieux contre eux, je les poursuivais jusque dans les villes étrangères.

12 Upon which as I went to Damascus with authority and commission from the chief priests,

Comme j’allais dans ces dispositions à Damas, avec pouvoir et permission des princes des prêtres,

13 At noon, O king, I saw in the way a light from heaven, beyond the brightness of the sun, shining around me and them who journeyed with me.

Je vis, ô roi, au milieu du jour, dans le chemin, qu’une lumière du ciel, surpassant l’éclat du soleil, brillait autour de moi et de ceux qui étaient avec moi.

14 And when we had all fallen to the earth, I heard a voice speaking to me, and saying in the Hebrew language, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? it is hard for thee to kick against the goads.

Et, étant tous tombés par terre, j’entendis une voix qui me disait en langue hébraïque: Saul, Saul, pourquoi me persécutes-tu? Il t’est dur de regimber contre l’aiguillon.

15 And I said, Who art thou, Lord? And he said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest.

Et moi, je demandai: Qui êtes-vous, Seigneur? Et le Seigneur répondit: Je suis Jésus que tu persécutes.

16 But rise, and stand upon thy feet: for I have appeared to thee for this purpose, to make thee a minister and a witness both of the things which thou hast seen, and of the things in which I will appear to thee;

Mais lève-toi et tiens-toi sur tes pieds; car je ne t’ai apparu que pour t’établir ministre et témoin des choses que tu as vues, et de celles pour lesquelles je t’apparaîtrai encore,

17 Delivering thee from the people, and from the Gentiles, to whom now I send thee,

Te délivrant des mains du peuple et de celles des gentils vers lesquels je t’envoie maintenant,

18 To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them who are sanctified by faith that is in me.

Pour ouvrir leurs yeux, afin qu’ils se convertissent des ténèbres à la lumière, et de la puissance de Satan à Dieu, et qu’ils reçoivent la rémission des péchés, et une part entre les saints, par la foi en moi.

19 Upon which, O king Agrippa, I was not disobedient to the heavenly vision:

Ainsi, roi Agrippa, je ne fus pas incrédule à la vision céleste;

20 But showed first to them of Damascus, and at Jerusalem, and throughout all the region of Judaea, and then to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, and do works fit for repentance.

Mais à ceux de Damas, d’abord, puis à Jérusalem, dans tout le pays de Judée, et aux gentils, j’annonçais qu’ils fissent pénitence, et qu’ils se convertissent à Dieu, faisant de dignes œuvres de pénitence.

21 For these causes the Jews caught me in the temple, and went about to kill me.

Voilà pourquoi les Juifs; s’étant saisis de moi lorsque j’étais dans le temple, cherchaient à me tuer.

22 Having therefore obtained help from God, I continue to this day, witnessing both to small and great, saying no other things than those which the prophets and Moses did say should come:

Mais, assisté du secours de Dieu, jusqu’à ce jour je suis demeuré ferme, rendant témoignage aux petits et aux grands, ne disant rien que ce que les prophètes et Moïse ont prédit devoir arriver:

23 That Christ should suffer, and that he should be the first that should rise from the dead, and should show light to the people, and to the Gentiles.

Que le Christ souffrirait, qu’il serait le premier dans la résurrection des morts, et qu’il devait annoncer la lumière à ce peuple et aux gentils.

24 And as he was thus speaking for himself, Festus said with a loud voice, Paul, thou art beside thyself; much learning doth make thee mad.

Comme il parlait ainsi, exposant sa défense, Festus, d’une voix forte, dit: Tu es fou, Paul; ton grand savoir te fait perdre le sens.

25 But he said, I am not mad, most noble Festus; but speak forth the words of truth and soberness.

Et Paul: Je ne suis point fou (dit-il), ô excellent Festus; mais je dis des paroles de sagesse et de vérité.

26 For the king knoweth of these things, before whom also I speak freely: for I am persuaded that none of these things are hidden from him; for this thing was not done in a corner.

Et il sait bien ces choses, le roi devant qui je parle avec tant d’assurance; car je pense qu’il n’ignore rien de cela, aucune de ces choses ne s’étant passée dans un coin.

27 King Agrippa, believest thou the prophets? I know that thou believest.

Croyez-vous aux prophètes, roi Agrippa? Je sais que vous y croyez.

28 Then Agrippa said to Paul, Almost thou persuadest me to be a Christian.

Et Agrippa à Paul: Peu s’en faut que tu ne me persuades d’être chrétien.

29 And Paul said, I would to God, that not only thou, but also all that hear me this day, were both almost, and altogether such as I am, except these bonds.

Mais Paul: Plaise à Dieu qu’il ne s’en faille ni peu ni beaucoup; que non seulement vous, mais encore tous ceux qui m’écoutent, deveniez aujourd’hui tels que je suis moi-même, à l’exception de ces liens.

30 And when he had thus spoken, the king rose, and the governor, and Bernice, and they that sat with them:

Alors le roi, le gouverneur, Bérénice, et tous ceux qui étaient assis avec eux se levèrent.

31 And when they had gone aside, they talked between themselves, saying, This man doeth nothing worthy of death or of bonds.

Et s’étant retirés à part, ils se parlaient l’un à l’autre, disant: Cet homme n’a rien fait qui mérite la mort ou les liens.

32 Then said Agrippa to Festus, This man might have been set at liberty, if he had not appealed to Caesar.

Aussi Agrippa dit à Festus: Cet homme pourrait être renvoyé, s’il n’en avait appelé à César.
