Acts 22
1 Men, brethren, and fathers, hear ye my defence which I make now to you.
Miehet, rakkat veljet ja isät! kuulkaat minun edesvastaustani, jonka minä teille sanon.
2 And when they heard that he spoke to them in the Hebrew language, they kept the more silence: and he saith, )
(Kuin he kuulivat hänen Hebrean kielellä heille puhuvan, vaikenivat he enemmin. Ja hän sanoi: )
3 I am verily a man who is a Jew, born in Tarsus, a city in Cilicia, yet brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel, and taught according to the perfect manner of the law of the fathers, being zealous toward God, as ye all are this day.
Minä olen Juudalainen, Tarsossa Kilikiassa syntynyt ja tässä kaupungissa kasvatettu Gamalielin jalkain juuressa, opetettu visusti vanhimpain laissa, ja olin Jumalan puolesta kiivas, niinkuin tekin kaikki olette tänäpänä,
4 And I persecuted this way to the death, binding and delivering into prisons both men and women.
Ja olen tätä tietä vainonnut kuolemaan asti, sitoin ja antain ylön vankiuteen sekä miehiä että vaimoja,
5 As also the high priest doth bear me witness, and all the council of the elders: from whom also I received letters to the brethren, and went to Damascus, to bring them who were there bound to Jerusalem, to be punished.
Niinkuin myös ylimmäinen pappi ja koko vanhimpain joukko minun todistajani ovat, joilta minä otin lähetyskirjat veljein tykö, ja vaelsin Damaskuun, että minä ne, jotka siellä olivat, olisin sidottuna tuonut Jerusalemiin rangaistaa.
6 And it came to pass, that, as I was on my journey, and had come near to Damascus about noon, suddenly there shone from heaven a great light around me.
Niin tapahtui minun matkassa ollessani ja lähestyissäni Damaskua puolipäivän aikaan, että suuri kirkkaus valaisi äkisti taivaasta minua ympäri.
7 And I fell to the ground, and heard a voice saying to me, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?
Ja minä lankesin maahan ja kuulin äänen minulle sanovan: Saul, Saul, miksis minua vainoot?
8 And I answered, Who art thou, Lord? And he said to me, I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom thou persecutest.
Niin minä vastasin: kuka sinä olet, Herra? Hän sanoi minulle: minä olen Jesus Natsaretista, jota sinä vainoot.
9 And they that were with me saw indeed the light, and were afraid; but they heard not the voice of him that spoke to me.
Mutta ne, jotka minun kanssani olivat, näkivät kyllä kirkkauden ja peljästyivät, vaan ei he hänen ääntänsä kuulleet, joka minua puhutteli.
10 And I said, What shall I do, Lord? And the Lord said to me, Arise, and go into Damascus; and there it shall be told thee concerning all things which are appointed for thee to do.
Niin minä sanoin: Herra, mitä minun pitää tekemän? Mutta Herra sanoi minulle: nouse ja mene Damaskuun, ja siellä sinulle sanotaan kaikki, mitä sinun on säätty tehdäkses.
11 And when I could not see for the glory of that light, being led by the hand of them that were with me, I came into Damascus.
Ja koska en minä nähnyt sen valkeuden kirkkauden tähden, talutettiin minä käsistä niiltä, jotka minun kanssani olivat, ja tulin Damaskuun.
12 And one Ananias, a devout man according to the law, having a good report of all the Jews who dwelt there,
Ja siellä oli jumalinen mies lain jälkeen, Ananias niemeltä; hänellä oli hyvä todistus kaikilta Juudalaisilta, jotka siellä asuivat.
13 Came to me, and stood, and said to me, Brother Saul, receive thy sight. And the same hour I looked up upon him.
Hän tuli minun tyköni, seisoi ja sanoi minulle: rakas veljeni Saul, saa sinun näkös jälleen. Ja minä katsoin sillä hetkellä hänen päällensä.
14 And he said, The God of our fathers hath chosen thee, that thou shouldest know his will, and see that Just One, and shouldest hear the voice of his mouth.
Niin hän sanoi: meidän isäimme Jumala on sinun valmistanut, että sinun pitää tunteman hänen tahtonsa, ja näkemän vanhurskaan, ja kuuleman ääntä hänen suustansa.
15 For thou shalt be his witness to all men of what thou hast seen and heard.
Sillä sinun pitää oleman hänen todistajansa kaikkein ihmisten edessä niistä, joita sinä nähnyt ja kuullut olet.
16 And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord.
Ja mitäs nyt viivyttelet? Nouse ja anna sinus kastettaa ja pestä pois sinun syntis, ja huuda avuksi Herran nimeä.
17 And it came to pass, that, when I had come again to Jerusalem, even while I prayed in the temple, I was in a trance;
Niin tapahtui, kuin minä Jerusalemiin palasin ja rukoilin templissä, että minä tulin horroksiin,
18 And saw him saying to me, Make haste, and depart quickly from Jerusalem: for they will not receive thy testimony concerning me.
Ja näin hänen minulle sanovan: riennä ja lähde kiiruusti Jerusalemista; sillä ei he ota vastaan sinun todistustas minusta.
19 And I said, Lord, they know that I imprisoned and beat in every synagogue them that believed on thee:
Ja minä sanoin: Herra, itse he tietävät, että minä panin torniin ja pieksin jokaisessa synagogassa niitä, jotka sinun päälles uskoivat.
20 And when the blood of thy martyr Stephen was shed, I also was standing by, and consenting to his death, and kept the raiment of them that slew him.
Ja kuin Stephanin sinun palvelias veri vuodatettiin, olin minä myös siinä läsnä, ja mielistyin hänen kuolemaansa, ja vartioitsin niiden vaatteita, jotka hänen tappoivat.
21 And he said to me, Depart: for I will send thee far away to the Gentiles.
Ja hän sanoi minulle: mene, sillä minä lähetän sinun kauvas pakanain tykö.
22 And they hearkened to him until this word, and then lifted up their voices, and said, Away with such a fellow from the earth: for it is not fit that he should live.
Ja he kuulivat häntä tähän sanaan asti, niin he korottivat äänensä ja sanoivat: ota pois senkaltainen ihminen maan päältä; sillä ei hänen ole luvallinen elää.
23 And as they cried out, and cast off their clothes, and threw dust into the air,
Ja kuin he niin huusivat, heittelivät vaatteitansa ja paiskasivat tomua tuuleen,
24 The chief captain commanded him to be brought into the barracks, and bade that he should be examined by scourging; that he might know for what cause they cried so against him.
Antoi sodanpäämies hänen viedä leiriin, ja käski piestä ja tutkittaa, että hän olis saanut tietää, minkätähden hänen päällensä niin huudettiin.
25 And as they bound him with thongs, Paul said to the centurion that stood by, Is it lawful for you to scourge a man that is a Roman, and uncondemned?
Kuin hän häntä nuorilla sitoi, sanoi Paavali sadanpäämiehelle, joka läsnä seisoi: onkos teidän kohtuullinen Roomalaista hosua ilman tuomitsematta?
26 When the centurion heard that, he went and told the chief captain, saying, Take heed what thou doest: for this man is a Roman.
Kuin sadanpäämies sen kuuli, meni hän sodanpäämiehen tykö, ilmoitti hänelle ja sanoi: mitäs tahdot tehdä? sillä tämä mies on Roomalainen.
27 Then the chief captain came, and said to him, Tell me, art thou a Roman? He said, Yea.
Niin sodanpäämies meni hänen tykönsä ja sanoi hänelle: sanos minulle, oletko sinä Roomalainen? Hän sanoi: olen niinkin.
28 And the chief captain answered, With a great sum I obtained this freedom. And Paul said, But I was free born.
Ja sodanpäämies vastasi: minä olen suurella rahalla tämän kaupungin oikeuden voittanut. Mutta Paavali sanoi: minä olen myös syntynyt (Roomalainen.)
29 Then immediately they departed from him who were about to examine him: and the chief captain also was afraid, after he knew that he was a Roman, and because he had bound him.
Ja he läksivät kohta hänen tyköänsä tutkimasta. Ja sodanpäämies rupesi pelkäämään, sittekuin hän sai tietää, hänen Roomalaisen olevan, että hän hänen sitonut oli.
30 On the next day, because he would have known the certainty why he was accused by the Jews, he loosed him from his bands, and commanded the chief priests and all their council to appear, and brought Paul down, and set him before them.
Mutta toisena päivänä tahtoi hän visummasti tietää, minkätähden hänen päällensä Juudalaisilta kannettiin, ja päästi hänen siteistä, ja käski ylimmäiset papit ja kaiken heidän raatinsa tulla kokoon, ja antoi Paavalin tulla heidän eteensä.
