Acts 21
1 And it came to pass, that after we were separated from them, and had launched, we came with a straight course to Coos, and the day following to Rhodes, and from there to Patara:
私たちは彼らと別れて出帆し、コスに直航し、翌日ロドスに着き、そこからパタラに渡った。
2 And finding a ship sailing over to Phenicia, we went aboard, and set forth.
そこにはフェニキヤ行きの船があったので、それに乗って出帆した。
3 Now when we had come in sight of Cyprus, we left it on the left hand, and sailed into Syria, and landed at Tyre: for there the ship was to unload her cargo.
やがてキプロスが見えて来たが、それを左にして、シリヤに向かって航海を続け、ツロに上陸した。ここで船荷を降ろすことになっていたからである。
4 And finding disciples, we tarried there seven days: who said to Paul through the Spirit, that he should not go up to Jerusalem.
私たちは弟子たちを見つけ出して、そこに七日間滞在した。彼らは、御霊に示されて、エルサレムに上らぬようにと、しきりにパウロに忠告した。
5 And when we had come to the end of those days, we departed and went on our way; and they all accompanied us on our way, with wives and children, till we were out of the city: and we kneeled down on the shore, and prayed.
しかし、滞在の日数が尽きると、私たちはそこを出て、旅を続けることにした。彼らはみな、妻や子どももいっしょに、町はずれまで私たちを送って来た。そして、ともに海岸にひざまずいて祈ってから、私たちは互いに別れを告げた。
6 And when we had taken our leave one of another, we took ship; and they returned home again.
それから私たちは船に乗り込み、彼らは家へ帰って行った。
7 And when we had finished our course from Tyre, we came to Ptolemais, and greeted the brethren, and abode with them one day.
私たちはツロからの航海を終えて、トレマイに着いた。そこの兄弟たちにあいさつをして、彼らのところに一日滞在した。
8 And the next day we that were of Paul’s company departed, and came to Caesarea: and we entered into the house of Philip the evangelist, who was one of the seven; and abode with him.
翌日そこを立って、カイザリヤに着き、あの七人のひとりである伝道者ピリポの家にはいって、そこに滞在した。
9 And the same man had four daughters, virgins, who prophesied.
この人には、預言する四人の未婚の娘がいた。
10 And as we tarried there many days, there came down from Judaea a certain prophet, named Agabus.
幾日かそこに滞在していると、アガボという預言者がユダヤから下って来た。
11 And when he had come to us, he took Paul’s belt, and bound his own hands and feet, and said, Thus saith the Holy Spirit, So shall the Jews at Jerusalem bind the man that owneth this belt, and shall deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles.
彼は私たちのところに来て、パウロの帯を取り、自分の両手と両足を縛って、「『この帯の持ち主は、エルサレムでユダヤ人に、こんなふうに縛られ、異邦人の手に渡される。』と聖霊がお告げになっています。」と言った。
12 And when we heard these things, both we, and they of that place, besought him not to go up to Jerusalem.
私たちはこれを聞いて、土地の人たちといっしょになって、パウロに、エルサレムには上らないよう頼んだ。
13 Then Paul answered, What mean ye to weep and to break my heart? for I am ready not to be bound only, but also to die at Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus.
するとパウロは、「あなたがたは、泣いたり、私の心をくじいたりして、いったい何をしているのですか。私は、主イエスの御名のためなら、エルサレムで縛られることばかりでなく、死ぬことさえも覚悟しています。」と答えた。
14 And when he would not be persuaded, we ceased, saying, The will of the Lord be done.
彼が聞き入れようとしないので、私たちは、「主のみこころのままに。」と言って、黙ってしまった。
15 And after those days we got ready, and went up to Jerusalem.
こうして数日たつと、私たちは旅仕度をして、エルサレムに上った。
16 There went with us also certain of the disciples of Caesarea, and brought with them one Mnason of Cyprus, an early disciple, with whom we should lodge.
カイザリヤの弟子たちも幾人か私たちと同行して、古くからの弟子であるキプロス人マナソンのところに案内してくれた。私たちはそこに泊まることになっていたのである。
17 And when we had come to Jerusalem, the brethren received us gladly.
エルサレムに着くと、兄弟たちは喜んで私たちを迎えてくれた。
18 And the day following Paul went in with us to James; and all the elders were present.
次の日、パウロは私たちを連れて、ヤコブを訪問した。そこには長老たちがみな集まっていた。
19 And when he had greeted them, he declared particularly what things God had wrought among the Gentiles by his ministry.
彼らにあいさつしてから、パウロは彼の奉仕を通して神が異邦人の間でなさったことを、一つ一つ話しだした。
20 And when they heard it, they glorified the Lord, and said to him, Thou seest, brother, how many thousands of Jews there are who believe; and they are all zealous of the law:
彼らはそれを聞いて神をほめたたえ、パウロにこう言った。「兄弟よ。ご承知のように、ユダヤ人の中で信仰にはいっている者は幾万となくありますが、みな律法に熱心な人たちです。
21 And they are informed concerning thee, that thou teachest all the Jews who are among the Gentiles to forsake Moses, saying that they ought not to circumcise their children, neither to walk after the customs.
ところで、彼らが聞かされていることは、あなたは異邦人の中にいるすべてのユダヤ人に、子どもに割礼を施すな、慣習に従って歩むな、と言って、モーセにそむくように教えているということなのです。
22 What is it therefore? the multitude must needs come together: for they will hear that thou art come.
それで、どうしましょうか。あなたが来たことは、必ず彼らの耳にはいるでしょう。
23 Do therefore this that we say to thee: We have four men who have a vow on them;
ですから、私たちの言うとおりにしてください。私たちの中に誓願を立てている者が四人います。
24 Take them and purify thyself with them, and pay their expenses that they may shave their heads: and all may know that those things, of which they were informed concerning thee, are nothing; but that thou thyself also walkest orderly, and keepest the law.
この人たちを連れて、あなたも彼らといっしょに身を清め、彼らが頭をそる費用を出してやりなさい。そうすれば、あなたについて聞かされていることは根も葉もないことで、あなたも律法を守って正しく歩んでいることが、みなにわかるでしょう。
25 As concerning the Gentiles who believe, we have written and concluded that they observe no such thing, except that they keep themselves from things offered to idols, and from blood, and from strangled, and from immorality.
信仰にはいった異邦人に関しては、偶像の神に供えた肉と、血と、絞め殺した物と、不品行とを避けるべきであると決定しましたので、私たちはすでに手紙を書きました。」
26 Then Paul took the men, and the next day purifying himself with them entered into the temple, to signify the accomplishment of the days of purification, until an offering should be offered for every one of them.
そこで、パウロはその人たちを引き連れ、翌日、ともに身を清めて宮にはいり、清めの期間が終わって、ひとりひとりのために供え物をささげる日時を告げた。
27 And when the seven days were almost ended, the Jews who were from Asia, when they saw him in the temple, stirred up all the people, and laid hands on him,
ところが、その七日がほとんど終わろうとしていたころ、アジヤから来たユダヤ人たちは、パウロが宮にいるのを見ると、全群衆をあおりたて、彼に手をかけて、
28 Crying out, Men of Israel, help: This is the man, that teacheth all men every where against the people, and the law, and this place: and further hath brought Greeks also into the temple, and hath polluted this holy place.
こう叫んだ。「イスラエルの人々。手を貸してください。この男は、この民と、律法と、この場所に逆らうことを、至る所ですべての人に教えている者です。そのうえ、ギリシヤ人を宮の中に連れ込んで、この神聖な場所をけがしています。」
29 For they had seen before with him in the city Trophimus an Ephesian, whom they supposed that Paul had brought into the temple.)
彼らは前にエペソ人トロピモが町でパウロといっしょにいるのを見かけたので、パウロが彼を宮に連れ込んだのだと思ったのである。
30 And all the city was moved, and the people ran together: and they took Paul, and drew him out of the temple: and immediately the doors were shut.
そこで町中が大騒ぎになり、人々は殺到してパウロを捕え、宮の外へ引きずり出した。そして、ただちに宮の門が閉じられた。
31 And as they went about to kill him, tidings came to the chief captain of the band, that all Jerusalem was in an uproar.
彼らがパウロを殺そうとしていたとき、エルサレム中が混乱状態に陥っているという報告が、ローマ軍の千人隊長に届いた。
32 Who immediately took soldiers and centurions, and ran down to them: and when they saw the chief captain and the soldiers, they stopped beating Paul.
彼はただちに、兵士たちと百人隊長たちとを率いて、彼らのところに駆けつけた。人々は千人隊長と兵士たちを見て、パウロを打つのをやめた。
33 Then the chief captain came near, and took him, and commanded him to be bound with two chains; and demanded who he was, and what he had done.
千人隊長は近づいてパウロを捕え、二つの鎖につなぐように命じたうえ、パウロが何者なのか、何をしたのか、と尋ねた。
34 And some cried one thing, some another, among the multitude: and when he could not know the certainty for the tumult, he commanded him to be carried into the barracks.
しかし、群衆がめいめい勝手なことを叫び続けたので、その騒がしさのために確かなことがわからなかった。そこで千人隊長は、パウロを兵営に連れて行くように命令した。
35 And when he came upon the stairs, so it was, that he was borne by the soldiers for the violence of the people.
パウロが階段にさしかかったときには、群衆の暴行を避けるために、兵士たちが彼をかつぎ上げなければならなかった。
36 For the multitude of the people followed, crying, Away with him.
大ぜいの群衆が「彼を除け。」と叫びながら、ついて来たからである。
37 And as Paul was to be led into the barracks, he said to the chief captain, May I speak to thee? Who said, Canst thou speak Greek?
兵営の中に連れ込まれようとしたとき、パウロが千人隊長に、「一言お話ししてもよいでしょうか。」と尋ねると、千人隊長は、「あなたはギリシヤ語を知っているのか。
38 Art not thou that Egyptian, who before these days madest an uproar, and leddest out into the wilderness four thousand men that were murderers?
するとあなたは、以前暴動を起こして、四千人の刺客を荒野に引き連れて逃げた、あのエジプト人ではないのか。」と言った。
39 But Paul said, I am a man who is a Jew of Tarsus, a city of Cilicia, a citizen of no mean city: and, I beseech thee, permit me to speak to the people.
パウロは答えた。「私はキリキヤのタルソ出身のユダヤ人で、れっきとした町の市民です。お願いです。この人々に話をさせてください。」
40 And when he had given him permission, Paul stood on the stairs, and beckoned with the hand to the people. And when there was made a great silence, he spoke to them in the Hebrew language, saying,
千人隊長がそれを許したので、パウロは階段の上に立ち、民衆に向かって手を振った。そして、すっかり静かになったとき、彼はヘブル語で次のように話した。
