2 Samuel 19
1 And it was told to Joab, Behold, the king weepeth and mourneth for Absalom.
Et Joab fut averti: Voici, le Roi est en larmes; il s'abîme dans son deuil pour Absalom.
2 And the victory that day was turned into mourning to all the people: for the people heard it said that day how the king was grieved for his son.
Et la victoire de cette journée devint un deuil pour tout le peuple, car en ce jour le peuple entendait qu'on disait: Le Roi est dans la douleur à cause de son fils.
3 And the people withdrew by stealth that day into the city, as people being ashamed steal away when they flee in battle.
Et en ce jour le peuple rentra dans la ville en s'effaçant de la même manière que filent des troupes, honteuses d'avoir fui dans le combat.
4 But the king covered his face, and the king cried with a loud voice, O my son Absalom, O Absalom, my son, my son!
Et le Roi se voila le visage et le Roi s'écriait à voix haute: Mon fils Absalom! Absalom! mon fils! mon fils!
5 And Joab came into the house to the king, and said, Thou hast shamed this day the faces of all thy servants, who this day have saved thy life, and the lives of thy sons and of thy daughters, and the lives of thy wives, and the lives of thy concubines;
Alors Joab entra chez le Roi dans la maison et dit: Aujourd'hui tu as jeté l'abattement sur le visage de tous tes serviteurs qui aujourd'hui ont sauvé ta vie et la vie de tes fils et de tes filles et la vie de tes femmes et la vie de tes concubines,
6 In that thou lovest thy enemies, and hatest thy friends. For thou hast declared this day, that thou regardest neither princes nor servants: for this day I perceive, that if Absalom had lived, and all we had died this day, then it had pleased thee well.
par l'amour que tu témoignes à ceux qui te haïssent et par la haine que tu montres pour ceux qui t'aiment; car aujourd'hui tu as déclaré ne te soucier ni de capitaines, ni de serviteurs; car je me suis convaincu aujourd'hui que, si Absalom vivait, et que nous tous, nous fussions morts, alors tu serais content.
7 Now therefore arise, go forth, and speak kindly to thy servants: for I swear by the LORD, if thou shalt not go forth, there will not tarry one with thee this night: and that will be worse to thee than all the evil that hath befallen thee from thy youth until now.
Maintenant donc lève-toi, sors, et adresse des paroles affectueuses à tes serviteurs! Car, par l'Éternel je le jure, si tu ne te montres pas, personne ne restera avec toi cette nuit; et pour toi cela serait plus funeste que tout ce qui a pu t'arriver de funeste depuis ta jeunesse jusqu'à présent.
8 Then the king rose, and sat in the gate. And they told to all the people, saying, Behold, the king doth sit in the gate. And all the people came before the king: for Israel had fled every man to his tent.
Alors le Roi se leva et s'installa dans la Porte. Et le fait fut annoncé à tout le peuple en ces termes: Voici, le Roi a pris séance dans la Porte. Et tout le peuple se présenta devant le Roi.
9 And all the people were at strife throughout all the tribes of Israel, saying, The king saved us from the hand of our enemies, and he delivered us from the hand of the Philistines; and now he hath fled out of the land for Absalom.
Cependant les Israélites s'étaient enfuis chacun dans ses tentes. Et dans toutes les Tribus d'Israël tout le monde récriminait et disait: Le Roi nous a arrachés de la main de nos ennemis, et sauvés de la main des Philistins, et maintenant il a fui hors du pays par le fait d'Absalom.
10 And Absalom, whom we anointed over us, is dead in battle. Now therefore why speak ye not a word of bringing the king back?
Et Absalom que nous avions oint [pour régner] sur nous a péri dans le combat; à présent pourquoi tardez-vous à réintégrer le Roi?
11 And king David sent to Zadok and to Abiathar the priests, saying, Speak to the elders of Judah, saying, Why are ye the last to bring the king back to his house? seeing the speech of all Israel is come to the king, even to his house.
De son côté, le Roi David envoyait aux Prêtres Tsadoc et Abiathar cette dépêche: Parlez aux Anciens de Juda en ces termes: Pourquoi seriez-vous les derniers à réintégrer le Roi dans sa maison, tandis que le langage de tout Israël parvient jusqu'au Roi dans sa maison?
12 Ye are my brethren, ye are my bones and my flesh: why then are ye the last to bring back the king?
Vous êtes mes frères, mes os et ma chair: pourquoi seriez-vous donc les derniers à restaurer le Roi?
13 And say ye to Amasa, Art thou not of my bone, and of my flesh? God do so to me, and more also, if thou be not captain of the host before me continually in the place of Joab.
Et dites à Amasa: N'es-tu pas mes os et ma chair? Qu'ainsi Dieu me fasse et pis encore, si tu n'entres pas à mon service en permanence comme général d'armée à la place de Joab!
14 And he bowed the heart of all the men of Judah, even as the heart of one man; so that they sent this word to the king, Return thou, and all thy servants.
Et il inclina le cœur de tous les hommes de Juda comme d'un seul homme, et par une députation ils firent dire au Roi: « Reviens, toi et tous tes serviteurs! »
15 So the king returned, and came to Jordan. And Judah came to Gilgal, to go to meet the king, to conduct the king over Jordan.
Là-dessus le Roi opéra son retour et arriva sur le Jourdain. Et Juda s'avança jusqu'à Guilgal pour aller au-devant du Roi et lui faire passer le Jourdain.
16 And Shimei the son of Gera, a Benjamite, who was of Bahurim, hasted and came down with the men of Judah to meet king David.
Alors accourut Siméï, fils de Géra, Benjaminite, de Bahurim, et il descendit avec les hommes de Juda au-devant du Roi David,
17 And there were a thousand men of Benjamin with him, and Ziba the servant of the house of Saul, and his fifteen sons and his twenty servants with him; and they went over Jordan before the king.
ayant avec lui mille hommes de Benjamin, et Tsiba, valet de la maison de Saül, escorté de ses quinze fils et de ses vingt domestiques; et ils franchirent le Jourdain à la vue du Roi.
18 And there went over a ferry boat to carry over the king’s household, and to do what he thought good. And Shimei the son of Gera fell down before the king, as he came over Jordan;
Et le bac était à l'autre bord à la disposition du Roi, pour passer la maison du Roi, et Siméï, fils de Géra, se prosterna devant le Roi prêt à passer le Jourdain.
19 And said to the king, Let not my lord impute iniquity to me, neither do thou remember that which thy servant did perversely the day that my lord the king went out of Jerusalem, that the king should take it to his heart.
Et il dit au Roi: Veuille mon Seigneur, le Roi, ne pas me compter une faute, et ne pas se souvenir, pour le garder sur le cœur, du tort qu'a eu ton serviteur, lorsque mon Seigneur le Roi sortait de Jérusalem!
20 For thy servant doth know that I have sinned: therefore, behold, I have come the first this day of all the house of Joseph to go down to meet my lord the king.
Car ton serviteur sent qu'il a manqué; et voici, aujourd'hui, de toute la maison de Joseph, je suis le premier à me présenter à la rencontre du Roi, mon Seigneur.
21 But Abishai the son of Zeruiah answered and said, Shall not Shimei be put to death for this, because he cursed the LORD’S anointed?
Et Abisaï, fils de Tseruïa, prit la parole et dit: Pourquoi faudrait-il que Siméï ne subît pas la mort pour le fait d'avoir maudit l'Oint de l'Éternel?
22 And David said, What have I to do with you, ye sons of Zeruiah, that ye should this day be adversaries to me? shall there any man be put to death this day in Israel? for do not I know that I am this day king over Israel?
Et David dit: Quel rapport ai-je avec vous, fils de Tseruïa, qui devenez aujourd'hui mes adversaires? Aujourd'hui un homme pourrait-il être mis à mort en Israël? car ne sais-je pas que c'est aujourd'hui que je suis Roi sur Israël?
23 Therefore the king said to Shimei, Thou shalt not die. And the king swore to him.
Et le Roi dit à Siméï: Tu ne seras point mis à mort. Et le Roi lui en fit le serment.
24 And Mephibosheth the son of Saul came down to meet the king, and had neither cared for his feet, nor trimmed his beard, nor washed his clothes, from the day the king departed until the day he came again in peace.
Et Mephiboseth, [petit-]fils de Saül, descendit à la rencontre du Roi. Or il n'avait ni baigné ses pieds, ni fait sa barbe, ni lavé ses habits depuis le jour du départ du Roi jusqu'au jour de son heureux retour.
25 And it came to pass, when he had come to Jerusalem to meet the king, that the king said to him, Why didst thou not go with me, Mephibosheth?
Comme il vint donc de Jérusalem à la rencontre du Roi, le Roi lui dit: Pourquoi n'es-tu pas parti avec moi, Mephiboseth?
26 And he answered, My lord, O king, my servant deceived me: for thy servant said, I will saddle me a donkey, that I may ride on it, and go to the king; because thy servant is lame.
Et il répondit: O Roi, mon Seigneur, j'ai été la dupe de mon valet. Car ton serviteur avait donné l'ordre: Selle-moi l'âne! et je le monterai et joindrai le Roi; car ton serviteur est perclus
27 And he hath slandered thy servant to my lord the king; but my lord the king is as an angel of God: do therefore what is good in thy eyes.
et ton serviteur a été desservi par lui auprès de mon Seigneur le Roi. Mais, mon Seigneur le Roi est comme un ange de Dieu! Fais donc ce qui sera bon à tes yeux!
28 For all of my father’s house were but dead men before my lord the king: yet didst thou set thy servant among them that ate at thy own table. What right therefore have I yet to cry any more to the king?
Car toute la maison de mon père n'avait à attendre de mon Seigneur le Roi que la mort; et pourtant tu as mis ton serviteur au nombre de tes commensaux. Et quel droit me reste, et quel sujet de me récrier auprès du Roi?
29 And the king said to him, Why speakest thou any more of thy matters? I have said, Thou and Ziba divide the land.
Et le Roi lui dit: Pourquoi prolonger tes discours? J'ai prononcé: Toi et Tsiba, vous aurez le champ en commun.
30 And Mephibosheth said to the king, Yea, let him take all, forasmuch as my lord the king hath come again in peace to his own house.
Et Mephiboseth dit au Roi: Qu'il prenne la totalité dès que mon Seigneur le Roi est heureusement rentré dans sa maison.
31 And Barzillai the Gileadite came down from Rogelim, and went over Jordan with the king, to conduct him over Jordan.
Et Barzillaï, de Galaad, descendit de Roglim et passa le Jourdain avec le Roi pour raccompagner dans la traversée du Jourdain.
32 Now Barzillai was a very aged man, even eighty years old: and he had provided the king with sustenance while he lay at Mahanaim; for he was a very great man.
Or Barzillaï était très âgé; il avait quatre-vingts ans; et il avait fourni le Roi pendant son séjour à Mahanaïm; car c'était un personnage très considérable.
33 And the king said to Barzillai, Come thou over with me, and I will feed thee with me in Jerusalem.
Et le Roi dit à Barzillaï: Passe avec moi sur l'autre rive; j'aurai soin de toi chez moi à Jérusalem.
34 And Barzillai said to the king, How long have I to live, that I should go up with the king to Jerusalem?
Et Barzillaï dit au Roi: Quel est le nombre des années de ma vie pour que je suive le Roi à Jérusalem?
35 I am this day eighty years old: and can I discern between good and evil? can thy servant taste what I eat or what I drink? can I hear any more the voice of singing men and singing women? why then should thy servant be yet a burden to my lord the king?
J'ai quatre-vingts ans aujourd'hui: suis-je à même de discerner le bien du mal? et ton serviteur peut-il savourer ce qu'il mange ou ce qu'il boit? ou puis-je encore jouir de la voix des chantres et des cantatrices? Et pourquoi ton serviteur serait-il encore à charge à mon Seigneur le Roi?
36 Thy servant will go a little way over Jordan with the king: and why should the king recompense me with such a reward?
C'est pour peu de temps que ton serviteur passerait avec le Roi de l'autre côté du Jourdain; et pourquoi le Roi m'accorderait-il ce bienfait?
37 Let thy servant, I pray thee, return again, that I may die in my own city, and be buried by the grave of my father and of my mother. But behold thy servant Chimham; let him go over with my lord the king; and do to him what shall seem good to thee.
Permets que ton serviteur retourne et que je meure dans ma cité près du tombeau de mon père et de ma mère. Mais, voici, ton serviteur Chimham passera avec mon Seigneur le Roi. Agis-en avec lui, comme tu le trouveras bon.
38 And the king answered, Chimham shall go over with me, and I will do to him that which shall seem good to thee: and whatever thou shalt require of me, that will I do for thee.
Et le Roi dit: Chimham passera avec moi et je veux le traiter à ton gré, et faire pour l'amour de toi tout ce que tu désirerais de moi.
39 And all the people went over Jordan. And when the king had come over, the king kissed Barzillai, and blessed him; and he returned to his own place.
Et ainsi tout le peuple passa le Jourdain; et le Roi passa; et le Roi donna le baiser à Barzillaï qu'il bénit et qui regagna sa demeure.
40 Then the king went on to Gilgal, and Chimham went on with him: and all the people of Judah conducted the king, and also half the people of Israel.
Et le roi se dirigea vers Guilgal, et Chimham l'accompagnait, et tout le peuple de Juda formait le cortège du Roi, ainsi que la moitié du peuple d'Israël.
41 And, behold, all the men of Israel came to the king, and said to him, Why have our brethren the men of Judah stolen thee away, and have brought the king, and his household, and all David’s men with him, over Jordan?
Et voilà que tous les hommes d'Israël se présentèrent au Roi et lui dirent: Pourquoi nos frères, les hommes de Juda, t'ont-ils accaparé, et ont-ils conduit le Roi et sa maison à travers le Jourdain, et tous les hommes de David avec lui?
42 And all the men of Judah answered the men of Israel, Because the king is near of kin to us: why then are ye angry for this matter? have we eaten at all at the king’s cost? or hath he given us any gift?
Et tous les hommes de Juda répondirent aux hommes d'Israël: Parce que le Roi me tient de plus près; et pourquoi donc t'irrites-tu de ce fait? Avons-nous vécu aux frais du Roi et nous a-t-il dotés de largesses?
43 And the men of Israel answered the men of Judah, and said, We have ten parts in the king, and we have also more right in David than ye: why then did ye despise us, that our advice should not be first had in bringing back our king? And the words of the men of Judah were fiercer than the words of the men of Israel.
Et les hommes d'Israël répondirent aux hommes de Juda et dirent: Je tiens au Roi par dix côtés et à David plus que toi; et pourquoi m'as-tu ainsi dédaigné? Et n'est-ce pas moi qui le premier ai parlé de la restauration de mon Roi? Et les discours des hommes de Juda furent plus rudes que les discours des hommes d'Israël.
