Romans 4

1 What then will we say that Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh, found?

Vad skola vi då säga om Abraham, vår stamfader efter köttet?

2 For if Abraham had been justified by works, he would have had a reason to boast, but not before God.

Om Abraham blev rättfärdig av gärningar, så har han ju något att berömma sig av. Dock icke inför Gud.

3 For what does the scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness.”

Ty vad säger skriften? »Abraham trodde Gud, och det räknades honom till rättfärdighet.»

4 Now for him who works, what he is paid is not counted as a gift, but as what is owed.

Den som håller sig till gärningar, honom bliver lönen tillräknad icke på grund av nåd, utan på grund av förtjänst.

5 But for him who does not work but instead believes in the one who justifies the ungodly, his faith is counted as righteousness.

Men den som icke håller sig till gärningar, utan tror på honom som gör den ogudaktige rättfärdig, honom räknas hans tro till rättfärdighet.

6 David also pronounces blessing on the man to whom God counts righteousness without works.

Så prisar ock David den människa salig, som Gud tillräknar rättfärdighet, utan gärningar:

7 He said, “Blessed are those whose lawless deeds are forgiven, and whose sins are covered.

»Saliga äro de vilkas överträdelser äro förlåtna, och vilkas synder äro överskylda.

8 Blessed is the man against whom the Lord will not count sin.”

Salig är den man som Herren icke tillräknar synd.»

9 Then is this blessing pronounced only on those of the circumcision, or also on those of the uncircumcision? For we say, “Faith was counted to Abraham as righteousness.”

Gäller nu detta ordet »salig» de omskurna allenast eller ock de oomskurna? Vi säga ju att »tron räknades Abraham till rättfärdighet».

10 So how was it counted? When Abraham was in circumcision, or in uncircumcision? It was not in circumcision, but in uncircumcision.

Huru blev den honom då tillräknad? Skedde det sedan han hade blivit omskuren, eller medan han ännu var oomskuren? Det skedde icke sedan han hade blivit omskuren, utan medan han ännu var oomskuren.

11 Abraham received the sign of circumcision. This was a seal of the righteousness of the faith that he had already possessed when he was in uncircumcision. The result of this sign was that he became the father of all those who believe, even if they are in uncircumcision. This means that righteousness will be counted for them.

Och han undfick omskärelsens tecken såsom ett insegel på den rättfärdighet genom tron, som han hade, medan han ännu var oomskuren. Ty så skulle han bliva en fader för alla oomskurna som tro, och så skulle rättfärdighet tillräknas dem.

12 This also meant that Abraham became the father of the circumcision for those who are not only circumcised but also for those who follow in the steps of faith of our father Abraham before he was circumcised.

Han skulle ock bliva en fader för omskurna, nämligen för sådana som icke allenast äro omskurna, utan ock vandra i spåren av den tro som vår fader Abraham hade, medan han ännu var oomskuren.

13 For the promise to Abraham and to his descendants that he would be heir of the world did not come through the law but through the righteousness of faith.

Det var nämligen icke genom lag som Abraham och hans säd undfick det löftet att han skulle få världen till arvedel; det var genom rättfärdighet av tro.

14 For if those who live by the law are to be the heirs, faith is made empty, and the promise is void.

Ty om de som låta det bero på lag skola få arvedelen, så är tron till intet nyttig, och löftet är gjort om intet.

15 For the law brings about wrath, but where there is no law, there is no trespass.

Vad lagen kommer åstad är ju vredesdom; men där ingen lag finnes, där finnes icke heller någon överträdelse.

16 For this reason it is by faith, in order that the promise may rest on grace and be guaranteed to all of Abraham's descendants—not only to those who are under the law, but also to those who share the faith of Abraham. He is the father of us all,

Därför måste det bero på tro, för att det skulle vara av nåd, så att löftet kunde bliva beståndande för all hans säd, icke blott för dem som hörde till lagens folk, utan ock för dem som allenast hade Abrahams tro. Han är ju allas vår fader,

17 as it is written, “I have made you the father of many nations.” Abraham was in the presence of him whom he trusted, that is, God, who gives life to the dead and calls the things that do not exist into existence.

enligt detta skriftens ord: »Jag har bestämt dig till att bliva en fader till många folk»; han är detta inför den Gud som han trodde, inför honom som gör de döda levande och kallar på de ting som icke äro till, likasom voro de till.

18 In hope he believed against hope, that he would become the father of many nations, according to what he had been told, “So will your descendants be.”

Och där ingen förhoppning fanns, där hoppades han ändå och trodde; och han kunde så bliva »en fader till många folk», efter vad som var förutsagt: »Så skall din säd bliva.»

19 Without becoming weak in faith, he considered his own body as dead (because he was about a hundred years old)—and he considered the deadness of Sarah's womb.

Och han försvagades icke i sin tro, när han betänkte huru hans egen kropp var såsom död -- han var ju omkring hundra år gammal -- och huru jämväl Saras moderliv var såsom dött.

20 But because of God's promise, Abraham did not hesitate in unbelief. Instead, he was strengthened in faith and gave praise to God.

Han tvivlade icke på Guds löfte i otro, utan blev fastmer starkare i sin tro; ty han ärade Gud

21 He was fully convinced that what God had promised, he was also able to accomplish.

och var fullt viss om att vad Gud hade lovat, det var han också mäktig att hålla.

22 Therefore this was also counted to him as righteousness.

Därför räknades det honom ock till rättfärdighet.

23 Now it was not written only for his benefit, that it was counted for him.

Men att det så tillräknades honom, det är skrivet icke såsom gällde det allenast honom,

24 It was written also for us, for whom it will be counted, we who believe in him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead.

utan det skulle gälla också oss; ty det skall tillräknas jämväl oss, oss som tro på honom som från de döda uppväckte Jesus, vår Herre,

25 This is the one who was delivered up for our trespasses and was raised for our justification.

vilken utgavs för våra synders skull och uppväcktes för vår rättfärdiggörelses skull.
