Romans 4
1 What then will we say that Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh, found?
Quel avantage dirons-nous donc qu'Abraham, notre père, a obtenu selon la chair?
2 For if Abraham had been justified by works, he would have had a reason to boast, but not before God.
Sans doute, si Abraham a été justifié par les oeuvres, il a sujet de se glorifier; mais devant Dieu, il n'en est pas ainsi.
3 For what does the scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness.”
En effet, que dit l'Écriture? «Abraham, dit-elle, crut à Dieu, et cela lui fut imputé à justice.»
4 Now for him who works, what he is paid is not counted as a gift, but as what is owed.
Or, celui qui fait une oeuvre, reçoit son salaire non pas comme une grâce, mais comme une chose due;
5 But for him who does not work but instead believes in the one who justifies the ungodly, his faith is counted as righteousness.
tandis que, pour celui qui ne fait point d'oeuvre, mais qui croit en celui qui justifie l'impie, sa foi lui est imputée à justice.
6 David also pronounces blessing on the man to whom God counts righteousness without works.
C'est ainsi que David exprime le bonheur de l'homme à qui Dieu impute la justice sans les oeuvres:
7 He said, “Blessed are those whose lawless deeds are forgiven, and whose sins are covered.
«Heureux ceux dont les iniquités sont pardonnées, et dont les péchés sont couverts!
8 Blessed is the man against whom the Lord will not count sin.”
Heureux l'homme à qui le Seigneur n'impute point son péché!»
9 Then is this blessing pronounced only on those of the circumcision, or also on those of the uncircumcision? For we say, “Faith was counted to Abraham as righteousness.”
Cette déclaration de bonheur ne concerne-t-elle donc que les circoncis? Elle est également pour les incirconcis. Nous disons, en effet, que la foi d'Abraham lui fut imputée à justice.
10 So how was it counted? When Abraham was in circumcision, or in uncircumcision? It was not in circumcision, but in uncircumcision.
Or, comment lui fut-elle imputée? Alors qu'il était circoncis, ou lorsqu'il ne l'était pas encore? Ce n'a pas été après, mais avant sa circoncision.
11 Abraham received the sign of circumcision. This was a seal of the righteousness of the faith that he had already possessed when he was in uncircumcision. The result of this sign was that he became the father of all those who believe, even if they are in uncircumcision. This means that righteousness will be counted for them.
Puis il reçut le signe de la circoncision, comme un sceau de la justice qu'il avait obtenue par la foi, quand il était encore incirconcis, afin qu'il fût le père de tous ceux qui ont la foi bien qu'étant incirconcis, pour que la justice leur soit imputée.
12 This also meant that Abraham became the father of the circumcision for those who are not only circumcised but also for those who follow in the steps of faith of our father Abraham before he was circumcised.
Il est aussi le père des circoncis, de ceux qui n'ont pas seulement reçu la circoncision, mais qui marchent sur les traces de la foi qu'avait Abraham, notre père, avant sa circoncision.
13 For the promise to Abraham and to his descendants that he would be heir of the world did not come through the law but through the righteousness of faith.
En effet, la promesse d'avoir le monde pour héritage fut faite à Abraham ou à sa postérité, non pas en vertu de la loi, mais en vertu de la justice de la foi.
14 For if those who live by the law are to be the heirs, faith is made empty, and the promise is void.
Car, si c'est de la loi que vient l'héritage, la foi est rendue vaine, et la promesse est annulée,
15 For the law brings about wrath, but where there is no law, there is no trespass.
parce que la loi produit la colère. Mais où il n'y a point de loi, il n'y a pas non plus de transgression.
16 For this reason it is by faith, in order that the promise may rest on grace and be guaranteed to all of Abraham's descendants—not only to those who are under the law, but also to those who share the faith of Abraham. He is the father of us all,
C'est donc par la foi qu'on devient héritier, afin que ce soit par grâce, et que la promesse soit assurée à toute la postérité d'Abraham, non seulement à celle qui est sous la loi, mais aussi à celle qui possède la foi d'Abraham, notre Père à tous, selon ce qui est écrit:
17 as it is written, “I have made you the father of many nations.” Abraham was in the presence of him whom he trusted, that is, God, who gives life to the dead and calls the things that do not exist into existence.
«Je t'ai établi père de beaucoup de nations» — notre père, dis-je, devant Dieu, en qui il a cru, qui donne la vie aux morts, et qui appelle les choses qui ne sont point comme si elles étaient.
18 In hope he believed against hope, that he would become the father of many nations, according to what he had been told, “So will your descendants be.”
Espérant contre toute espérance, il crut, et il devint ainsi le père de beaucoup de nations, selon ce qui lui avait été dit; «Telle sera ta postérité.»
19 Without becoming weak in faith, he considered his own body as dead (because he was about a hundred years old)—and he considered the deadness of Sarah's womb.
Il vit, sans faiblir dans sa foi, que son corps était usé, puisqu'il avait près de cent ans, et que Sara n'était plus en âge d'avoir des enfants.
20 But because of God's promise, Abraham did not hesitate in unbelief. Instead, he was strengthened in faith and gave praise to God.
Il n'eut ni hésitation ni défiance à l'égard de la promesse de Dieu, mais il fut fortifié dans sa foi, et il donna gloire à Dieu,
21 He was fully convinced that what God had promised, he was also able to accomplish.
étant pleinement persuadé que ce que Dieu a promis, il a aussi la puissance de l'accomplir.
22 Therefore this was also counted to him as righteousness.
C'est pourquoi, sa foi lui fut imputée à justice.
23 Now it was not written only for his benefit, that it was counted for him.
Or, ce n'est pas pour lui seul qu'il est écrit que sa foi lui fut imputée à justice,
24 It was written also for us, for whom it will be counted, we who believe in him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead.
mais c'est aussi pour nous, à qui notre foi doit être pareillement imputée; pour nous, qui croyons en Celui qui a ressuscité d'entre les morts Jésus, notre Seigneur,
25 This is the one who was delivered up for our trespasses and was raised for our justification.
qui a été livré pour nos offenses et qui est ressuscité pour notre justification.
