< Proverbs 23 >
1 When you sit to eat with a ruler, observe carefully what is before you,
Ati yeroo waa nyaachuuf bulchaa tokko wajjin teessutti, waan fuula kee dura jiru hubadhuu ilaali;
2 and put a knife to your throat if you are a person who likes to eat a lot of food.
ati yoo nyaataaf fedhii guddaa qabaatte, qoonqoo kee irra billaa kaaʼi.
3 Do not crave his delicacies, for it is the food of lies.
Waan nyaanni sun nama gowwoomsuuf, miʼaa isaatti hin gaggabin.
4 Do not work too hard to gain wealth; be wise enough to know when to stop.
Sooromuuf jettee of hin dadhabsiisin; of qabuufis ogummaa qabaadhu.
5 Will you let your eyes light upon it? It will be gone, for it will surely take up wings like an eagle and fly off to the sky.
Sooromni yommuu ati ija irra buufattutti ni bada; inni dhugumaan Baallee baafatee akkuma risaa gara samiitti ol barrisaatii.
6 Do not eat the food of one with an evil eye— and do not crave his delicacies,
Buddeena doqnaa hin nyaatin; cidha isaas hin kajeelin;
7 for he is the kind of man who counts the price of the food. “Eat and drink!” he says to you, but his heart is not with you.
inni yeroo hunda waaʼee gatii yaadaatii. Inni, “Nyaadhuu dhugi” siin jedha; garaan isaa garuu si wajjin hin jiru.
8 You will vomit up the little you have eaten and you will have wasted your compliments.
Ati waanuma xinnoo nyaatte sana ni diddigda; dubbii kee gaarii sana illee ni dhabda.
9 Do not speak in the hearing of a fool, for he will despise the wisdom of your words.
Sababii inni ogummaa dubbii keetii tuffatuuf ati nama gowwaatti hin dubbatin.
10 Do not move an ancient boundary stone or encroach on the fields of orphans,
Dhagaa daangaa durii hin dhiibin yookaan lafa qotiisaa ijoollee abbaa hin qabneetti hin darbin.
11 for their Redeemer is strong and he will plead their case against you.
Furiin isaanii jabaadhaatii; inni gara isaanii goree sitti falma.
12 Apply your heart to instruction and your ears to words of knowledge.
Qalbii kee gara gorsaatti, gurra kee immoo gara dubbii beekumsaatti deebifadhu.
13 Do not withhold instruction from a child, for if you discipline him, he will not die.
Ijoollee kee adabachuu hin dhiisin; yoo ati arcummeedhaan adabde isaan hin duʼan.
14 It is you who must beat him with the rod and save his soul from Sheol. (Sheol )
Arcummeedhaan isaan adabiitii lubbuu isaanii duʼa oolchi. (Sheol )
15 My son, if your heart is wise, then my heart also will be glad;
Yaa ilma ko, yoo garaan kee ogeessa taʼe, garaan koo ni gammada;
16 my inmost being will rejoice when your lips speak what is right.
yoo arrabni kee waan qajeelaa dubbate, keessi koo baayʼee gammada.
17 Do not let your heart envy sinners, but continue in the fear of Yahweh all the day.
Garaan kee cubbamootatti hin hinaafin; garuu yeroo hunda Waaqayyoon sodaadhu.
18 Surely there is a future and your hope will not be cut off.
Ati dhugumaan gara fuulduraatti abdii qabda; abdiin kees hin citu.
19 Hear—you!—my son, and be wise and direct your heart in the way.
Yaa ilma ko, dhaggeeffadhu; ogeessa taʼi; qalbii kee daandii qajeelaa irra buufadhu.
20 Do not associate with drunkards, or with gluttonous eaters of meat,
Warra daadhii wayinii baayʼee dhuganitti yookaan warra foonitti gaggabanitti hin makamin;
21 for the drunkard and the glutton become poor and slumber will clothe them with rags.
machooftuu fi albaadheyyiin ni hiyyoomu; hirriba baayʼisuunis moofaa nama uffachiisa.
22 Listen to your father who begot you and do not despise your mother when she is old.
Abbaa kee kan si dhalche dhagaʼi; haadha kees yeroo isheen jaartu hin tuffatin.
23 Buy the truth, but do not sell it; buy wisdom, instruction, and understanding.
Dhugaa bitadhu malee hin gurgurin; ogummaa, qajeelfamaa fi hubannaas bitadhu.
24 The father of the righteous person will greatly rejoice, and he who begets a wise child will be glad in him.
Abbaan nama qajeelaa gammachuu guddaa qaba; namni ilma ogeessa qabu isatti gammada.
25 Let your father and your mother be glad and let her who bore you rejoice.
Abbaan keetii fi haati kee haa gammadan; isheen si deesse sun haa ililchitu!
26 My son, give me your heart and let your eyes observe my ways.
Yaa ilma ko, garaa kee naa kenni; iji kees karaa koo haa ilaalu;
27 For a prostitute is a deep pit, and an immoral woman is a narrow well.
sagaagaltuun boolla gad fagoodhaatii, niitiin ganda labeenis boolla bishaanii dhiphaa dha.
28 She lies in wait like a robber and she increases the number of the treacherous among humanity.
Isheen akkuma saamtuutti riphxee nama eeggatti; namoota gidduuttis warra hin amanamne baayʼifti.
29 Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has fights? Who has complaining? Who has wounds for no reason? Who has bloodshot eyes?
Eenyutu, “Anaaf wayyoo!” jedha? Eenyutu gadda qaba? Eenyutu lola qaba? Eenyutu komii qaba? Eenyutu sababii malee madaaʼa? Kan iji isaa diimatu eenyu?
30 Those who linger over wine, those who try the mixed wine.
Warra daadhii wayinii dhuguu irra akka malee turan, warra daadhii wayinii walmakaa afaaniin qabuu dhaqanii dha.
31 Do not look at the wine when it is red, when it sparkles in the cup and goes down smoothly.
Yeroo inni diimatutti, yeroo inni billillee keessa ol xixinniqutti, yeroo inni suuta jedhee gad buʼutti daadhii wayinii ija itti qabdee hin ilaalin.
32 In the last it bites like a serpent and it stings like an adder.
Dhuma irratti akkuma bofaa nama idda; akkuma buutiis nama ciniina.
33 Your eyes will see strange things and your heart will utter perverse things.
Iji kee waan haaraa arga; qalbiin kees jalʼina yaada.
34 You will be as one who sleeps on the high seas or lies on the top of a mast.
Ati akkuma nama walakkaa galaana guddaa ciisuu ti; akkuma nama fiixee utubaa doonii irra ciisuu taata.
35 “They hit me,” you will say, “but I was not hurt. They beat me, but I did not feel it. When will I wake up? I will seek another drink.”
Ati akkana jetta; “Isaan na dhaʼan; ani garuu hin miidhamne! Isaan na tuman; garuu natti hin dhagaʼamne! Ani dhugaatii biraa barbaaddachuuf yooman dammaqa?”
