< Proverbs 13 >
1 A wise son hears his father's instruction, but a mocker will not listen to rebuke.
Filius sapiens, doctrina patris: qui autem illusor est, non audit cum arguitur.
2 From the fruit of his mouth a person enjoys good things, but the appetite of the treacherous is for violence.
De fructu oris sui homo satiabitur bonis: anima autem prævaricatorum iniqua.
3 The one who guards his mouth protects his life, but the one who opens wide his lips will ruin himself.
Qui custodit os suum, custodit animam suam: qui autem inconsideratus est ad loquendum, sentiet mala.
4 The appetite of lazy people craves but gets nothing, but the appetite of diligent people will be richly satisfied.
Vult et non vult piger: anima autem operantium impinguabitur.
5 The righteous person hates lies, but a wicked person makes himself repugnant, and he does what is shameful.
Verbum mendax iustus detestabitur: impius autem confundit, et confundetur.
6 Righteousness protects those who are faultless in their path, but wickedness turns away those who commit sin.
Iustitia custodit innocentis viam: impietas autem peccatorem supplantat.
7 There is someone who enriches himself, but has nothing at all, and there is someone who gives everything away, yet is truly wealthy.
Est quasi dives cum nihil habeat: et est quasi pauper, cum in multis divitiis sit.
8 The ransom of a rich man's life is his wealth, but a poor person does not hear a threat.
Redemptio animæ viri, divitiæ suæ: qui autem pauper est, increpationem non sustinet.
9 The light of righteous people rejoices, but the lamp of wicked people will be put out.
Lux iustorum lætificat: lucerna autem impiorum extinguetur.
10 Pride only breeds conflict, but for those who listen to good advice there is wisdom.
Inter superbos semper iurgia sunt: qui autem agunt omnia cum consilio, reguntur sapientia.
11 Wealth dwindles away when there is too much vanity, but the one who makes money by working with his hand will make his money grow.
Substantia festinata minuetur: quæ autem paulatim colligitur manu, multiplicabitur.
12 When hope is postponed, it breaks the heart, but a longing fulfilled is a tree of life.
Spes, quæ differtur, affligit animam: lignum vitæ desiderium veniens.
13 Whoever despises instruction brings destruction on himself, but he who respects the commandment will be rewarded.
Qui detrahit alicui rei, ipse se in futurum obligat: qui autem timet præceptum, in pace versabitur. Animæ dolosæ errant in peccatis: iusti autem misericordes sunt, et miserantur.
14 The teaching of a wise person is a fountain of life, turning you away from the snares of death.
Lex sapientis fons vitæ, ut declinet a ruina mortis.
15 Good insight wins favor, but the way of the treacherous is never-ending.
Doctrina bona dabit gratiam: in itinere contemptorum vorago.
16 Prudent people act out of knowledge in every decision, but a fool parades his folly.
Astutus omnia agit cum consilio: qui autem fatuus est, aperit stultitiam.
17 A wicked messenger falls into trouble, but a faithful envoy brings reconciliation.
Nuncius impii cadet in malum: legatus autem fidelis, sanitas.
18 The one who ignores instruction will have poverty and shame, but honor will come to him who learns from correction.
Egestas, et ignominia ei, qui deserit disciplinam: qui autem acquiescit arguenti, glorificabitur.
19 A longing realized is sweet to the appetite, but fools hate to turn away from evil.
Desiderium si compleatur, delectat animam: detestantur stulti eos, qui fugiunt mala.
20 Walk with wise people and you will be wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm.
Qui cum sapientibus graditur, sapiens erit: amicus stultorum similis efficietur.
21 Disaster runs after sinners, but righteous people are rewarded with good.
Peccatores persequitur malum: et iustis retribuentur bona.
22 A good person leaves an inheritance for his grandchildren, but a sinner's wealth is stored up for the righteous person.
Bonus reliquit heredes filios, et nepotes: et custoditur iusto substantia peccatoris.
23 An unplowed field owned by the poor could produce much food, but it is swept away by injustice.
Multi cibi in novalibus patrum: et aliis congregantur absque iudicio.
24 The one who does not discipline his son hates him, but one who loves his son is careful to instruct him.
Qui parcit virgæ, odit filium suum: qui autem diligit illum, instanter erudit.
25 The righteous person eats until he satisfies his appetite, but the stomach of the wicked is always hungry.
Iustus comedit, et replet animam suam: venter autem impiorum insaturabilis.
