< Proverbs 13 >

1 A wise son hears his father's instruction, but a mocker will not listen to rebuke.
Anak yang arif memperhatikan bila ayahnya memberi petuah; orang sombong tak mau menerima teguran.
2 From the fruit of his mouth a person enjoys good things, but the appetite of the treacherous is for violence.
Perkataan orang baik mendatangkan keuntungan; orang yang tak jujur senang pada kekerasan.
3 The one who guards his mouth protects his life, but the one who opens wide his lips will ruin himself.
Orang yang hati-hati dalam tutur katanya akan aman hidupnya; orang yang bicara sembarangan akan ditimpa kemalangan.
4 The appetite of lazy people craves but gets nothing, but the appetite of diligent people will be richly satisfied.
Si malas banyak keinginan tapi tak satu pun yang dicapainya; orang yang bekerja keras mendapat segala yang diinginkannya.
5 The righteous person hates lies, but a wicked person makes himself repugnant, and he does what is shameful.
Orang jujur benci akan dusta, tingkah laku orang jahat memalukan dan tercela.
6 Righteousness protects those who are faultless in their path, but wickedness turns away those who commit sin.
Kejujuran melindungi orang yang hidup lurus; kejahatan menghancurkan orang yang berdosa.
7 There is someone who enriches himself, but has nothing at all, and there is someone who gives everything away, yet is truly wealthy.
Ada yang berlagak kaya, padahal tak berharta; ada yang berlagak miskin, padahal kaya raya.
8 The ransom of a rich man's life is his wealth, but a poor person does not hear a threat.
Orang kaya harus mengeluarkan uang agar hidupnya aman; orang miskin bebas dari ancaman.
9 The light of righteous people rejoices, but the lamp of wicked people will be put out.
Orang saleh bagaikan cahaya cemerlang; orang jahat bagaikan lampu padam.
10 Pride only breeds conflict, but for those who listen to good advice there is wisdom.
Keangkuhan hanya menghasilkan pertengkaran; orang yang bijaksana mau menerima ajaran.
11 Wealth dwindles away when there is too much vanity, but the one who makes money by working with his hand will make his money grow.
Kekayaan yang didapat dengan mudah akan cepat berkurang pula; tapi harta yang dikumpulkan sedikit demi sedikit akan semakin bertambah.
12 When hope is postponed, it breaks the heart, but a longing fulfilled is a tree of life.
Kalau harapan tidak dipenuhi, batin merana; kalau keinginan terkabul, hati bahagia.
13 Whoever despises instruction brings destruction on himself, but he who respects the commandment will be rewarded.
Orang yang meremehkan ajaran TUHAN, mencelakakan dirinya; orang yang taat kepada hukum Allah akan mendapat upahnya.
14 The teaching of a wise person is a fountain of life, turning you away from the snares of death.
Ajaran orang bijaksana bagaikan sumber kebahagiaan; bila ada ancaman, ajaran itu menyelamatkan.
15 Good insight wins favor, but the way of the treacherous is never-ending.
Orang berbudi akan disanjung; orang yang tak dapat dipercaya akan hidup susah.
16 Prudent people act out of knowledge in every decision, but a fool parades his folly.
Orang bijaksana berpikir dahulu sebelum bertindak; orang bodoh mengobralkan kebodohannya.
17 A wicked messenger falls into trouble, but a faithful envoy brings reconciliation.
Utusan yang tak becus mendatangkan celaka; utusan yang dapat dipercaya menjamin keberhasilan.
18 The one who ignores instruction will have poverty and shame, but honor will come to him who learns from correction.
Orang yang tak mau dididik menjadi miskin dan hina; orang yang mengindahkan nasihat akan dihormati.
19 A longing realized is sweet to the appetite, but fools hate to turn away from evil.
Alangkah baiknya mendapat apa yang diinginkan! Orang bodoh tak mau berpaling dari kejahatan.
20 Walk with wise people and you will be wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm.
Orang yang bergaul dengan orang bijaksana, akan menjadi bijaksana; orang yang bergaul dengan orang bodoh, akan celaka.
21 Disaster runs after sinners, but righteous people are rewarded with good.
Orang berdosa selalu dikejar-kejar kemalangan orang baik selalu menerima kebahagiaan.
22 A good person leaves an inheritance for his grandchildren, but a sinner's wealth is stored up for the righteous person.
Orang baik mewariskan kekayaan kepada anak cucunya; kekayaan orang berdosa disimpan untuk orang yang lurus hidupnya.
23 An unplowed field owned by the poor could produce much food, but it is swept away by injustice.
Tanah kosong dapat menghasilkan banyak makanan untuk orang miskin; tetapi ketidakadilan menyebabkan tanah itu tidak dikerjakan.
24 The one who does not discipline his son hates him, but one who loves his son is careful to instruct him.
Tidak memukul anak, berarti tidak cinta kepadanya; kalau cinta, harus berani memukul dia.
25 The righteous person eats until he satisfies his appetite, but the stomach of the wicked is always hungry.
Orang yang baik selalu berkecukupan, tetapi orang jahat selalu kekurangan.
