< Proverbs 10 >

1 The proverbs of Solomon. A wise son makes his father rejoice but a foolish son brings grief to his mother.
The proverbs of Solomon. A wise son causeth [his] father to rejoice; but a foolish son is the grief of his mother.
2 Treasures accumulated by wickedness have no value, but doing what is right keeps you from death.
Treasures of wickedness will not profit aught; but righteousness will deliver from death.
3 Yahweh does not let the soul of the righteous person go hungry, but he frustrates the cravings of the wicked.
The Lord will not suffer the soul of the righteous to famish; but the sinful desires of the wicked will he cast away.
4 A lazy hand causes a person to be poor, but the hand of the diligent person gains riches.
He becometh poor that laboreth with an indolent hand, but the hand of the diligent maketh rich.
5 A wise son gathers a crop in the summer, but it is disgraceful for him to sleep during harvest.
He that gathereth in summer is an intelligent son; [but] he that sleepeth in harvest is a son that causeth shame.
6 Gifts from God are upon the head of the righteous person, but the mouth of the wicked covers up violence.
Blessings come upon the head of the righteous; but the mouth of the wicked covereth violence.
7 The righteous person makes those who remember him happy, but the name of the wicked will rot away.
The memory of the just is [destined] to be blessed; but the name of the wicked shall rot.
8 Those who are sensible accept commands, but a talkative fool will come to ruin.
The wise in heart will accept commandments; but he that is a fool in his speaking will stumble.
9 He who walks in integrity walks in safety, but the one who makes his ways crooked, he will be found out.
He that walketh uprightly ever walketh securely; but he that perverteth his ways will be punished.
10 He who winks the eye causes grief, but a talkative fool will be thrown down.
He that winketh with the eye causeth vexation; and he that is a fool in his speaking will stumble.
11 The mouth of the righteous person is a water spring of life, but the mouth of the wicked covers up violence.
A source of life is the mouth of the righteous; but the mouth of the wicked covereth violence.
12 Hatred stirs up conflicts, but love covers over all offenses.
Hatred stirreth up strifes; but love throweth a cover over all transgressions.
13 Wisdom is found on the lips of a discerning person, but a rod is for the back of the one who has no sense.
On the lips of the man of understanding there is found wisdom: but a rod is for the back of him that is void of sense.
14 Wise men store up knowledge, but the mouth of a fool brings destruction near.
Wise men treasure up knowledge; but the mouth of the foolish is an approaching terror.
15 The wealth of a rich man is his fortified city; the poverty of the poor is their destruction.
The wealth of the rich man is his strong town: the terror of the poor is their poverty.
16 The wage of the righteous person leads to life; the profit of the wicked leads them to sin.
The labor of the righteous [tendeth] to life: the product of the wicked is for sin.
17 There is a path to life for the one who follows discipline, but the one who rejects correction is led astray.
On the way unto life is he that observeth correction; but he that forsaketh reproof is in error.
18 Whoever conceals hatred has lying lips, and whoever spreads slander is a fool.
He that hideth hatred hath lips of falsehood; and he that spreadeth abroad an evil report, is a fool.
19 When there are many words, transgression is not lacking, but he who is careful in what he says is wise.
In a multitude of words transgression cannot be avoided; but he that refraineth his lips is intelligent.
20 The tongue of the righteous person is pure silver; there is little value in the heart of the wicked.
[Like] choice silver is the tongue of the righteous: the heart of the wicked is worth but very little.
21 The lips of the righteous person nourish many, but fools die because of their lack of sense.
The lips of the righteous feed many: but fools die through lack of sense.
22 The good gifts of Yahweh bring wealth and he adds no pain to it.
The blessing of the Lord it is which maketh rich, and painful labor addeth nothing thereto.
23 Wickedness is a game a fool plays, but wisdom is a pleasure to a man of understanding.
It is as sport to a fool to do wicked deeds; but a man of understanding hath wisdom.
24 The fear of the wicked person will overtake him, but the desire of righteous people will be granted.
What the wicked dreadeth, that will come upon him: but the longing of the righteous will God grant.
25 The wicked are like the storm that passes by, and they are no more, but the righteous person is a foundation that lasts forever.
As the whirlwind passeth by, the wicked is no more; but the righteous is an everlasting foundation.
26 Like vinegar on the teeth and smoke in the eyes, so is the sluggard to those who send him.
As vinegar is to the teeth, and as smoke is to the eyes: so is the sluggard to those that send him.
27 The fear of Yahweh prolongs life, but the years of the wicked will be short.
The fear of the Lord increaseth [man's] days; but the years of the wicked will be shortened.
28 The hope of righteous people is their joy, but the years of wicked people will be short.
The expectation of the righteous is joy; but the hope of the wicked shall perish.
29 The way of Yahweh protects those who have integrity, but it is destruction for the wicked.
The way of the Lord is a stronghold to the upright; but terror is destined to the workers of injustice.
30 The righteous person will never be overthrown, but the wicked will not remain in the land.
The righteous shall never be removed; but the wicked shall not inhabit the earth.
31 Out of the mouth of the righteous person comes the fruit of wisdom, but the perverse tongue will be cut out.
The mouth of the just uttereth wisdom; but the tongue of perverseness shall be cut out.
32 The lips of the righteous person know what is acceptable, but the mouth of the wicked, they know what is perverse.
The lips of the righteous know [how to obtain] favor; but the mouth of the wicked [speaketh] perverseness.
