Numbers 14
1 That night all the community wept loudly.
Toen begon al het volk in die nacht te schreeuwen en te jammeren.
2 All the people of Israel criticized Moses and Aaron. The whole community said to them, “We wish we had died in the land of Egypt, or here in this wilderness!
Alle Israëlieten morden tegen Moses en Aäron, en heel de gemeenschap zei tot hen: Ach, waren we toch in het land van Egypte gestorven, of omgekomen in deze woestijn!
3 Why did Yahweh bring us to this land to die by the sword? Our wives and our little ones will become victims. Is it not better for us to return to Egypt?”
Waarom brengt Jahweh ons naar dit land, waar wij door het zwaard zullen vallen, en onze vrouwen en kinderen een prooi zullen worden? Is het niet beter, dat we terugkeren naar Egypte?
4 They said to each another, “Let us choose another leader, and let us return to Egypt.”
En onder elkander spraken zij af: Laten we een aanvoerder kiezen; dan gaan we terug naar Egypte!
5 Then Moses and Aaron lay facedown before all the assembly of the community of the people of Israel.
Toen wierpen Moses en Aäron zich voor heel de verzamelde gemeenschap van Israëls kinderen neer.
6 Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh, who were some of those sent to examine the land, tore their clothes.
En Josuë, de zoon van Noen, en Kaleb, de zoon van Jefoenne, die tot de verkenners van het land hadden behoord, scheurden hun kleren,
7 They spoke to all the community of the people of Israel. They said, “The land that we passed through and examined is a very good land.
en riepen tot heel de gemeenschap der Israëlieten: Het land, dat wij hebben doorkruist, om het te verkennen, is buitengewoon vruchtbaar.
8 If Yahweh is pleased with us, then he will take us into this land and give it to us. The land flows with milk and honey.
Zo Jahweh ons genadig is, brengt Hij ons naar dit land, en geeft Hij ons een land, dat druipt van melk en honing.
9 But do not rebel against Yahweh, and do not fear the people in the land, for they are bread to us. Their protection will be removed from them, because Yahweh is with us. Do not fear them.”
Neen, weest niet weerspannig tegen Jahweh! Ge behoeft de bewoners van het land niet te vrezen; want ze zijn onze prooi. Hun schaduw is van hen weggegleden, terwijl Jahweh ons bijstaat, vreest hen dus niet.
10 Then all the congregation said to stone them with stones. But the glory of Yahweh appeared at the tent of meeting to all the people of Israel.
Maar reeds maakte heel de gemeenschap aanstalten om hen te stenigen, toen eensklaps de Glorie van Jahweh boven de openbaringstent aan alle Israëlieten verscheen.
11 Yahweh said to Moses, “How long must this people despise me? How long must they fail to trust me, despite all the signs of my power that I have done among them?
En Jahweh sprak tot Moses: Hoe lang zal dit volk Mij verguizen; hoe lang zal het weigeren in Mij te geloven, ondanks alle tekenen, die Ik onder hen heb verricht?
12 I will attack them with plague, disinherit them, and make from your own clan a nation that will be greater and mightier than they are.”
Ik zal hen slaan met de pest, en hen uitroeien; dan maak Ik u tot een groter en machtiger volk!
13 Moses said to Yahweh, “If you do this, then the Egyptians will hear about it, because you rescued this people from them by your power.
Maar Moses zeide tot Jahweh: De Egyptenaren hebben gehoord, dat Gij door uw kracht dit volk uit hun midden hebt weggevoerd.
14 They will tell it to this land's inhabitants. They have heard that you, Yahweh, are present with this people, because you are seen face to face. Your cloud stands over our people. You go before them in a pillar of cloud by day and in a pillar of fire by night.
Ook de bewoners van dit land hebben vernomen, dat Gij, Jahweh, te midden van dit volk vertoeft; dat Gij, Jahweh, voor aller ogen verschijnt, en dat uw wolk boven hen staat, dat Gij in een wolkkolom overdag en des nachts in een vuurkolom voor hen uitgaat.
15 Now if you kill this people as one man, then the nations that have heard of your fame will speak and say,
Wanneer Gij nu dit volk tot den laatsten man doodt, zullen de volken, die uw faam hebben gehoord, zeggen:
16 'Because Yahweh could not take this people into the land that he swore to give them, he has killed them in the wilderness.'
Omdat Jahweh niet machtig genoeg was, dit volk naar het land te brengen, dat Hij hun onder ede beloofd had, heeft Hij ze maar in de woestijn vermoord.
17 Now, I beg you, use your great power. For you have said,
Toon nu, Heer, de grootheid van uw kracht, zoals Gij zelf hebt gezegd:
18 'Yahweh is slow to anger and abundant in covenant faithfulness. He forgives iniquity and transgression. He will by no means clear the guilty when he brings the punishment of the ancestors' sin on their descendants, to the third and fourth generation.'
Jahweh is lankmoedig en rijk aan genade. Hij vergeeft de zonden en misdaden wel maar laat ze niet ongestraft; Hij wreekt de misdaad van de vaderen op de zonen tot in het derde en vierde geslacht.
19 Pardon, I plead with you, this people's sin because of the greatness of your covenant faithfulness, just as you have always forgiven this people from the time they were in Egypt until now.”
Ach, vergeef dan de zonde van dit volk volgens uw grote ontferming, zoals Gij dit volk vergeven hebt van Egypte tot hier toe.
20 Yahweh said, “I have pardoned them in keeping with your request,
Toen sprak Jahweh: Op uw bede schenk Ik vergiffenis.
21 but truly, as I live, and as all the earth will be filled with my glory,
Maar, zo waarachtig Ik leef, en heel de aarde van de glorie van Jahweh vervuld is,
22 all those people who saw my glory and the signs of power that I did in Egypt and in the wilderness—they have still tempted me these ten times and have not listened to my voice.
geen van de mannen, die mijn Glorie hebben aanschouwd, en mijn tekenen, die Ik in Egypte en in de woestijn heb gewrocht, maar Mij nu voor de tiende maal tarten en niet naar mijn stem willen luisteren:
23 So I say that they will certainly not see the land about which I made an oath to their ancestors. Not one of them who despised me will see it,
geen van hen zal het land aanschouwen, dat Ik hun vaderen onder ede beloofd heb. Niemand, die Mij heeft verguisd, zal het aanschouwen,
24 except for my servant Caleb, because he had another spirit. He has followed me fully; I will bring him into the land which he went to examine. His descendants will possess it.
maar mijn dienaar Kaleb, die van een andere geest is bezield en Mij dan ook trouw is gebleven, zal Ik als beloning in het land brengen, waar hij is binnengetreden, en zijn nakomelingschap zal het bezitten.
25 (Now the Amalekites and Canaanites lived in the valley.) Tomorrow turn and go to the wilderness by the way of the Sea of Reeds.”
Trekt morgen weer de woestijn in, de richting uit van de Rode Zee.
26 Yahweh spoke to Moses and to Aaron. He said,
En Jahweh vervolgde tot Moses en Aäron:
27 “How long must I tolerate this evil community that criticizes me? I have heard the complaining of the people of Israel against me.
Hoe lang zal deze boze gemeenschap nog tegen Mij morren? Het gemor, dat de Israëlieten tegen Mij hebben aangeheven, heb Ik vernomen.
28 Say to them, 'As I live,' says Yahweh, 'as you have spoken in my hearing, I will do this to you:
Zeg hun: Zo waar Ik leef, is de godsspraak van Jahweh! Zoals zij te mijnen aanhoren hebben gesproken, zo zal Ik met u doen.
29 Your dead bodies will fall in this wilderness, all you who complained against me, you who were counted in the census, the whole number of the people from twenty years old and upward.
In deze woestijn zullen uw lijken vallen: allen, die van u gemonsterd zijn, allen zonder uitzondering, van twintig jaar af: omdat gij tegen Mij hebt gemord.
30 You will certainly not go into the land that I promised to make your home, except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.
Neen, gij komt het land niet binnen, dat Ik u met opgestoken hand als woonplaats beloofd heb, behalve Kaleb, de zoon van Jefoenne en Josuë, de zoon van Noen.
31 But your little ones who you said would be victims, I will take them into the land. They will experience the land that you have rejected!
Maar uw kinderen, die gij al tot een prooi hebt verklaard, zal Ik er binnenleiden, en zij zullen het land waarderen, dat gij hebt versmaad.
32 As for you, your dead bodies will fall in this wilderness.
Uw lijken zullen in deze woestijn blijven liggen,
33 Your children will be shepherds in the wilderness for forty years. They must bear the consequences of your acts of rebellion until the end of your corpses in the wilderness.
en uw zonen zullen veertig jaar lang in de woestijn blijven zwerven en uw tuchteloos gedrag moeten boeten, totdat uw lijken in de woestijn zijn vergaan.
34 Just as the number of the days during which you examined the land—forty days, you must likewise bear the consequences of your sins for forty years—one year for every day, and you must know what it is like for me to oppose you.
Zoals gij veertig dagen het land hebt verkend, zo zullen zij veertig jaren uw misdaden boeten, een jaar voor iedere dag. Zo zult ge beseffen wat mijn afkeer betekent,
35 I, Yahweh, have spoken. I will certainly do this to all this evil community that is gathered together against me. They will be completely cut off, and here they will die.'”
Ik, Jahweh, heb het gezegd! Zo zal Ik doen met heel deze boze gemeenschap, die tegen Mij heeft samengespannen; in deze woestijn zullen zij omkomen, daar zullen zij sterven.
36 So the men Moses sent to spy out the land, who returned and made the entire community grumble against Moses by spreading a bad report about the land—
De mannen nu, die Moses had uitgezonden, om het land te verkennen, en die bij hun terugkeer heel de gemeenschap tegen Hem hadden doen morren, door praatjes over dat land te vertellen,
37 these men who had brought out a bad report about the land were struck down, and they died of a plague before Yahweh.
de mannen, die dergelijke lasterpraat hadden verspreid, stierven voor het aanschijn van Jahweh een plotselinge dood.
38 Of those men who had gone to spy out the land, only Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh remained alive.
Van al de mannen, die het land waren gaan verkennen, bleven alleen Josuë, de zoon van Noen, en Kaleb, de zoon van Jefoenne, in leven.
39 When Moses reported these words to all the people of Israel, they mourned very deeply.
Toen Moses dit alles aan de Israëlieten had overgebracht, werd het volk diep bedroefd.
40 They rose up early in the morning and went to the top of the mountain and said, “Look, we are here, and we will go to the place that Yahweh has promised, for we have sinned.”
Vroeg in de volgende morgen wilden zij de top van de berg beklimmen, en riepen: Zie, we trekken al op naar de plaats, waarvan Jahweh gesproken heeft; want we hebben gezondigd!
41 But Moses said, “Why are you now violating Yahweh's command? You will not succeed.
Maar Moses sprak: Waarom overtreedt ge Jahweh’s bevel? Het zal u niet lukken.
42 Do not go, because Yahweh is not with you to prevent you from being defeated by your enemies.
Trekt niet op; want Jahweh is niet in uw midden. Ge zult zeker door uw vijanden worden verslagen;
43 The Amalekites and Canaanites are there, and you will die by the sword because you turned back from following Yahweh. So he will not be with you.”
want de Amalekieten en Kanaänieten staan daar tegenover u. Door het zwaard zult ge vallen; want gij hebt u van Jahweh afgekeerd, en Jahweh staat u niet bij.
44 But they presumed to go up into the hill country; however, neither Moses nor the ark of the covenant of Yahweh left the camp.
Maar ze waren vermetel genoeg, om toch de top van de berg te bestijgen, ofschoon de ark van Jahweh’s Verbond en Moses de legerplaats niet verlieten.
45 Then the Amalekites came down, and also the Canaanites who lived on those hills. They attacked the Israelites and defeated them all the way to Hormah.
Doch de Amalekieten en Kanaänieten, die op de berg woonden, kwamen naar beneden, versloegen ze, en dreven ze terug tot Chorma toe. En de Amalekieten en Kanaänieten hielden het laagland bezet.
