Matthew 3
1 In those days John the Baptist came preaching in the wilderness of Judea saying,
そのころ、バプテスマのヨハネが現われ、ユダヤの荒野で教えを宣べて、言った。
2 “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near.”
「悔い改めなさい。天の御国が近づいたから。」
3 For this is he who was spoken of by Isaiah the prophet, saying, “The voice of one calling out in the wilderness, 'Make ready the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.'”
この人は預言者イザヤによって、 「荒野で叫ぶ者の声がする。『主の道を用意し、主の通られる道をまっすぐにせよ。』」 と言われたその人である。
4 Now John wore clothing of camel's hair and a leather belt around his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey.
このヨハネは、らくだの毛の着物を着、腰には皮の帯を締め、その食べ物はいなごと野蜜であった。
5 Then Jerusalem, all Judea, and all the region around the Jordan River went out to him.
さて、エルサレム、ユダヤ全土、ヨルダン川沿いの全地域の人々がヨハネのところへ出て行き、
6 They were baptized by him in the Jordan River, as they confessed their sins.
自分の罪を告白して、ヨルダン川で彼からバプテスマを受けた。
7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to him for baptism, he said to them, “You offspring of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath that is coming?
しかし、パリサイ人やサドカイ人が大ぜいバプテスマを受けに来るのを見たとき、ヨハネは彼らに言った。「まむしのすえたち。だれが必ず来る御怒りをのがれるように教えたのか。
8 Bear fruit worthy of repentance.
それなら、悔い改めにふさわしい実を結びなさい。
9 Do not think of saying among yourselves, 'We have Abraham for our father.' For I say to you that God is able to raise up children for Abraham even out of these stones.
『われわれの先祖はアブラハムだ。』と心の中で言うような考えではいけません。あなたがたに言っておくが、神は、この石ころからでも、アブラハムの子孫を起こすことがおできになるのです。
10 Already the ax has been placed against the root of the trees. So every tree that does not produce good fruit is chopped down and thrown into the fire.
斧もすでに木の根元に置かれています。だから、良い実を結ばない木は、みな切り倒されて、火に投げ込まれます。
11 I baptize you with water for repentance. But he who comes after me is mightier than I, and I am not worthy even to carry his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.
私は、あなたがたが悔い改めるために、水のバプテスマを授けていますが、私のあとから来られる方は、私よりもさらに力のある方です。私はその方のはきものを脱がせてあげる値うちもありません。その方は、あなたがたに聖霊と火とのバプテスマをお授けになります。
12 His winnowing fork is in his hand to thoroughly clear off his threshing floor and to gather his wheat into the storehouse. But he will burn up the chaff with fire that can never be put out.”
手に箕を持っておられ、ご自分の脱穀場をすみずみまできよめられます。麦を倉に納め、殻を消えない火で焼き尽くされます。」
13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan River to be baptized by John.
さて、イエスは、ヨハネからバプテスマを受けるために、ガリラヤからヨルダンにお着きになり、ヨハネのところに来られた。
14 But John kept trying to stop him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?”
しかし、ヨハネはイエスにそうさせまいとして、言った。「私こそ、あなたからバプテスマを受けるはずですのに、あなたが、私のところにおいでになるのですか。」
15 Jesus responded and said to him, “Permit it now, for it is right for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then John permitted him.
ところが、イエスは答えて言われた。「今はそうさせてもらいたい。このようにして、すべての正しいことを実行するのは、わたしたちにふさわしいのです。」そこで、ヨハネは承知した。
16 After he was baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him. He saw the Spirit of God coming down like a dove and resting upon him.
こうして、イエスはバプテスマを受けて、すぐに水から上がられた。すると、天が開け、神の御霊が鳩のように下って、自分の上に来られるのをご覧になった。
17 Behold, a voice came out of the heavens saying, “This is my beloved Son. I am very pleased with him.”
また、天からこう告げる声が聞こえた。「これは、わたしの愛する子、わたしはこれを喜ぶ。」
