Matthew 3
1 In those days John the Baptist came preaching in the wilderness of Judea saying,
En ces jours-là parut Jean-Baptiste, prêchant dans le désert de Judée,
2 “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near.”
et disant: « Repentez-vous, car le royaume des cieux est proche. »
3 For this is he who was spoken of by Isaiah the prophet, saying, “The voice of one calling out in the wilderness, 'Make ready the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.'”
C’est lui qui a été annoncé par le prophète Isaïe, disant: « Une voix a retenti au désert: Préparez le chemin du Seigneur, aplanissez ses sentiers. »
4 Now John wore clothing of camel's hair and a leather belt around his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey.
Or Jean avait un vêtement de poils de chameau, et autour de ses reins une ceinture de cuir, et il se nourrissait de sauterelles et de miel sauvage.
5 Then Jerusalem, all Judea, and all the region around the Jordan River went out to him.
Alors venaient à lui Jérusalem, et toute la Judée, et tout le pays qu’arrose le Jourdain.
6 They were baptized by him in the Jordan River, as they confessed their sins.
Et, confessant leurs péchés, ils se faisaient baptiser par lui dans le Jourdain.
7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to him for baptism, he said to them, “You offspring of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath that is coming?
Voyant un grand nombre de Pharisiens et de Sadducéens venir à ce baptême il leur dit: « Race de vipères, qui vous a appris à fuir la colère qui vient?
8 Bear fruit worthy of repentance.
Faites donc de dignes fruits de repentir.
9 Do not think of saying among yourselves, 'We have Abraham for our father.' For I say to you that God is able to raise up children for Abraham even out of these stones.
Et n’essayez pas de dire en vous-mêmes: Nous avons Abraham pour père; car je vous dis que de ces pierres mêmes Dieu peut faire naître des enfants à Abraham.
10 Already the ax has been placed against the root of the trees. So every tree that does not produce good fruit is chopped down and thrown into the fire.
Déjà la cognée est à la racine des arbres: tout arbre donc qui ne porte pas de bon fruit sera coupé et jeté au feu.
11 I baptize you with water for repentance. But he who comes after me is mightier than I, and I am not worthy even to carry his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.
Moi, je vous baptise dans l’eau pour le repentir; mais celui qui doit venir après moi est plus puissant que moi, et je ne suis pas digne de porter sa chaussure; il vous baptisera dans l’Esprit-Saint et dans le feu.
12 His winnowing fork is in his hand to thoroughly clear off his threshing floor and to gather his wheat into the storehouse. But he will burn up the chaff with fire that can never be put out.”
Sa main tient le van; il nettoiera son aire, il amassera son froment dans le grenier, et il brûlera la paille dans un feu qui ne s’éteint pas. »
13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan River to be baptized by John.
Alors Jésus, venant de Galilée, alla trouver Jean au Jourdain pour être baptisé par lui.
14 But John kept trying to stop him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?”
Jean s’en défendait en disant: « C’est moi qui doit être baptisé par vous, et vous venez à moi! »
15 Jesus responded and said to him, “Permit it now, for it is right for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then John permitted him.
Jésus lui répondit: « Laisse faire maintenant, car il convient que nous accomplissions ainsi toute justice. » Alors Jean le laissa faire.
16 After he was baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him. He saw the Spirit of God coming down like a dove and resting upon him.
Jésus ayant été baptisé sortit aussitôt de l’eau, et voilà que les cieux lui furent ouverts, et il vit l’Esprit de Dieu descendre comme une colombe et venir sur lui.
17 Behold, a voice came out of the heavens saying, “This is my beloved Son. I am very pleased with him.”
Et du ciel une voix disait: « Celui-ci est mon Fils bien-aimé, en qui j’ai mis mes complaisances. »
