Judges 7
1 Then Jerub Baal (that is, Gideon) rose up early, and all the people who were with him, and they encamped beside the spring of Harod. The camp of Midian was to their north in the valley near the hill of Moreh.
Après cela, Jérobaal, le même que Gédéon, se leva de grand matin, et tout le peuple avec lui; ils campèrent vers la fontaine d'Arad, et le camp de Moab était au nord de la fontaine, du côté de Gabaathamoré, dans le vallon.
2 Yahweh said to Gideon, “There are too many soldiers for me to give you victory over the Midianites, so that Israel may not boast over me, saying, 'Our own power has saved us.'
Et le Seigneur dit à Gédéon: Le peuple qui te suit est nombreux, tellement que je ne livrerai pas Madian à ses mains, de peur qu'Israël n'aille se glorifier contre moi, et ne dise: C'est ma main qui m'a sauvé.
3 Now therefore, proclaim in the ears of the people and say, 'Whoever is afraid, whoever trembles, let him return and depart from Mount Gilead.'” So twenty-two thousand people went away, and ten thousand remained.
Parle donc au peuple, disant: Y a-t-il ici quelqu'un qui craigne et faiblisse? que celui-là s'en aille, qu'il s'éloigne des montagnes de Galaad. Or, vingt-deux mille du peuple partirent, et dix mille restèrent.
4 Yahweh said to Gideon, “The people are still too many. Take them down to the water, and I will make their number smaller for you there. If I say to you, 'This one will go with you,' he will go with you; but if I say, 'This one will not go with you,' he will not go.”
Et le Seigneur dit à Gédéon; Ce peuple est encore nombreux; fais-le descendre auprès de l'eau, et là je le purifierai pour toi. Et celui de qui je le dirai: Il doit marcher avec toi, marchera; celui de qui je te dirai: Il ne doit point marcher avec toi, ne marchera pas.
5 So Gideon brought the people down to the water, and Yahweh said to him, “Separate everyone who laps up the water, as a dog laps, from those who kneel down to drink.”
Et Gédéon conduisit le peuple auprès de l'eau, et le Seigneur lui dit: Celui qui prendra de l'eau avec la langue, comme le font les chiens, tu le placeras d'un côté, et tu placeras d'un autre côté tous ceux qui se mettront à genoux pour boire.
6 Three hundred men lapped. The rest of the men kneeled down to drink water.
Or, le nombre de ceux qui prirent de l'eau dans leur main et la portèrent à leur bouche s'éleva à trois cents, et tout le reste du peuple se mit à genoux pour boire.
7 Yahweh said to Gideon, “With the three hundred men who lapped, I will rescue you and give you victory over the Midianites. Let every other man go back to his own place.”
Et le Seigneur dit à Gédéon: C'est avec les trois cents hommes qui ont pris de l'eau dans leurs mains que je vous sauverai et vous livrerai Madian; tout le reste du peuple s'en ira, chacun en son pays.
8 So those who were chosen took their supplies and their trumpets. Gideon sent away all the men of Israel, every man to his tent, but he kept the three hundred men. Now the Midian camp was down below him in the valley.
Les trois cents prirent donc tous les vivres du peuple et leurs cors, et Gédéon congédia tout Israël, chacun en sa demeure, puis il encouragea les trois cents. Cependant, le camp des Madianites était au-dessous de lui, au fond de la vallée.
9 That same night Yahweh said to him, “Get up! Attack the camp, for I am going to give you victory over it.
Et cette nuit-là même, il advint que le Seigneur lui dit: Debout, descends sur leur camp, car je l'ai livré à tes mains,
10 But if you are afraid to go down, go down to the camp with Purah your servant,
Si tu crains de descendre seul, descends sur le camp avec Phara, ton serviteur.
11 and listen to what they are saying, and your courage will be strengthened to attack the camp.” So Gideon went with Purah his servant, down to the guard posts of the camp.
Ecoute ce qu'ils diront; après cela, tes mains seront fortifiées, et tu descendras pour attaquer le camp. Il descendit, accompagné seulement de Phara, son serviteur, vers la plus avancée des compagnies de cinquante hommes qui étaient dans le camp.
12 The Midianites, the Amalekites, and all the people of the east settled along in the valley, as thick as a cloud of locusts. Their camels were more than could be counted; they were more in number than the grains of the sand on the seashore.
Et Madian, Amalec et les fils de l'Orient étaient entassés au fond de la vallée, comme les sauterelles quand elles foisonnent; la multitude de leurs chameaux était innombrable, et ils étaient comme le sable sur le rivage de la mer.
13 When Gideon arrived there, a man was telling a dream to his companion. The man said, “Look! I had a dream, and I saw a round loaf of barley bread tumbling into the camp of Midian. It came to the tent, and hit it so hard that it fell down and turned it upside down, so that it lay flat.”
Quand Gédéon survint, voilà qu'un homme racontait à son voisin un songe, et il disait: J'ai eu un songe; j'ai vu un pain de pâte d'orge roulant sur le camp des Madianites; il arriva jusqu'à une tente, il la frappa et la fit tomber; il renversa de fond en comble la tente, et elle tomba.
14 The other man said, “This is nothing other than the sword of Gideon (the son of Joash), the Israelite. God has given him victory over Midian and all their army.”
Or, son voisin lui répondit: Le pain n'est autre chose que l'épée de Gédéon, fils de Joas, homme d'Israël. Le Seigneur a livré à ses mains Madian et notre camp tout entier.
15 When Gideon heard the retelling of the dream and its interpretation, he bowed down in worship. He went back to the camp of Israel and said, “Get up! Yahweh has given you victory over the Midian army.”
Gédéon, ayant ouï le récit du songe et son interprétation, adora le Seigneur; il rentra au camp d'Israël, et il dit: Levez-vous, parce que le Seigneur a livré à nos mains le camp des Madianites.
16 He divided the three hundred men into three groups, and he gave them all trumpets and empty jars, with torches inside each jar.
Il divisa ses trois cents hommes en trois troupes, et il leur donna des cors à tous, et dans l'autre main des pots vides, et dans chaque pot une lampe.
17 He said to them, “Look at me and do what I do. Watch! When I come to the edge of the camp, you must do what I do.
Et il leur dit: Soyez attentifs a ce que je ferai, et faites de même. J'entrerai par la tête du camp, et comme je ferai vous ferez aussi.
18 When I blow the trumpet, I and all who are with me, then blow your trumpets also on every side of the entire camp and shout, 'For Yahweh and for Gideon!'”
Je ferai retentir mon cor, et vous sonnerez de même tout à l'entour du camp, et vous direz: Au Seigneur et à Gédéon!
19 So Gideon and the hundred men who were with him came to the edge of the camp, right at the beginning of the middle watch. Just as the Midianites were changing guard, they blew the trumpets and broke the jars that were in their hands.
Gédéon et ses cent hommes entrèrent donc par la tête du camp, au commencement de la seconde veille; le bruit qu'ils firent réveilla les gardes; et ils sonnèrent du cor, et ils agitèrent les pots qu'ils tenaient à la main.
20 The three companies blew the trumpets and broke the jars. They held the torches in their left hands and the trumpets in their right hands to blow them. They shouted out, “The sword of Yahweh and of Gideon.”
Les trois troupes sonnèrent du cor, et brisèrent leurs pots; alors, les hommes, tenant de la main gauche les lampes et de la main droite les cors, qu'ils faisaient retentir, crièrent: L'épée du Seigneur et de Gédéon!
21 Every man stood in his place around the camp and all the Midianite army ran. They shouted and ran away.
Chaque homme resta en place tout autour du camp, et tout le camp se mit à courir; les Madianites se donnèrent des ordres confus, et ils s'enfuirent.
22 When they blew the three hundred trumpets, Yahweh set every Midianite man's sword against his comrades and against all their army. The army fled as far as Beth Shittah toward Zererah, as far as the border of Abel Meholah, near Tabbath.
Et les trois cents cors sonnaient toujours, et le Seigneur tourna l'épée de chaque Madianite contre son voisin dans le camp tout entier. Le camp s'enfuit jusqu'à Bethséed, Tagaragatha, Abelméula, tirant vers Tabath.
23 The men of Israel from Naphtali, Asher, and all Manasseh were called out, and they went after Midian.
En Israël, Nephthali, Aser, tout Manassé apportèrent leur secours, et ils poursuivirent Madian.
24 Gideon sent messengers throughout all the hill country of Ephraim, saying, “Go down against Midian and take control of the Jordan River, as far as Beth Barah, to stop them.” So all the men of Ephraim gathered together and took control of the waters, as far as Beth Barah and the Jordan River.
Et Gédéon dépêcha des messagers dans toutes les montagnes d'Ephraïm, disant: Descendez à la rencontre de Madian, emparez-vous de l'eau jusqu'à Béthéra, emparez-vous du cours du Jourdain. Et tous les hommes d'Ephraïm crièrent, et ils s'emparèrent de l'eau jusqu'à Béthéra; ils s'emparèrent du cours du Jourdain.
25 They captured the two princes of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb. They killed Oreb at the rock of Oreb, and they killed Zeeb at the winepress of Zeeb. They went after the Midianites, and they brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon, who was on the other side of the Jordan.
Et ils prirent les chefs de Madian Oreb et Zeb; ils tuèrent Oreb à Sur- Oreb; ils tuèrent Zeb en Jacephzeph. Et ils poursuivirent Madian, et ils rapportèrent, de l'autre côté du Jourdain, à Gédéon, les têtes de Zeb et d'Oreb.
