Joshua 9
1 Then all the kings who lived beyond the Jordan in the hill country, and in the lowlands along the shore of the Great Sea toward Lebanon—the Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites, and the Jebusites—
Y aconteció que como oyeron estas cosas todos los reyes que estaban de esta parte del Jordán, así en las montañas como en los llanos, y en toda la costa de la gran mar delante del Líbano, los Jetteos, Amorreos, Cananeos, Ferezeos, Heveos, y Jebuseos,
2 these joined together under one command, to wage war against Joshua and Israel.
Juntáronse a una de un acuerdo para pelear contra Josué e Israel.
3 When the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and to Ai,
Mas los moradores de Gabaón, como oyeron lo que Josué había hecho a Jericó y a Hai;
4 they acted with a cunning plan. They went as messengers. They took worn-out sacks and put them on their donkeys. They also took old wineskins that were worn, torn, and had been repaired.
Ellos usaron también de astucia; y fueron, y fingiéronse embajadores, y tomaron sacos viejos sobre sus asnos, y cueros viejos de vino rotos y remendados;
5 They put old and patched sandals on their feet, and dressed in old, worn-out clothing. All the bread in their food supply was dry and moldy.
Y zapatos viejos y remendados en sus pies, y vestidos viejos sobre sí: y todo el pan que traían para el camino, seco y mohoso.
6 Then they went to Joshua in the camp at Gilgal and said to him and to the men of Israel, “We have traveled from a very far country, so now make a covenant with us.”
Y vinieron a Josué al campo en Galgala, y dijéronle a él y a los de Israel: Nosotros venimos de tierra muy lejana, hacéd pues ahora con nosotros alianza.
7 The men of Israel said to the Hivites, “Perhaps you live near us. How can we make a covenant with you?”
Y los de Israel respondieron a los Heveos: Quizá vosotros habitáis en medio de nosotros: ¿cómo pues podremos nosotros hacer alianza con vosotros?
8 They said to Joshua, “We are your servants.” Joshua said to them, “Who are you? Where did you come from?”
Y ellos respondieron a Josué: Nosotros somos tus siervos. Y Josué les dijo: ¿Quién sois vosotros; y de donde venís?
9 They said to him, “Your servants have come here from a land very far away, because of the name of Yahweh your God. We have heard a report about him and about everything that he did in Egypt—
Y ellos respondieron: Tus siervos han venido de muy lejanas tierras por la fama de Jehová tu Dios, porque hemos oído su fama, y todas las cosas que hizo en Egipto:
10 and everything that he did to the two kings of the Amorites on the other side of the Jordan—to Sihon king of Heshbon, and to Og king of Bashan who was at Ashtaroth.
Y todas las cosas que hizo a los dos reyes de los Amorreos, que estaban de la otra parte del Jordán: a Sejón rey de Jesebón, y a Og rey de Basán, que estaban en Astarot.
11 Our elders and all the inhabitants of our country said to us, 'Take provisions in your hand for the journey. Go to meet them and say to them, “We are your servants. Make a treaty with us.”
Por lo cual nuestros ancianos y todos los moradores de nuestra tierra nos dijeron: Tomád en vuestras manos provisión para el camino, e id delante de ellos, y decídles: Nosotros somos vuestros siervos, y hacéd ahora con nosotros alianza:
12 This is our bread, it was still warm when we took it from our houses on the day we set out to come to you. But now, see, it is dry and moldy.
Este nuestro pan tomamos caliente de nuestras casas para el camino el día que salimos para venir a vosotros; y hélo aquí, ahora que está seco y mohoso:
13 These wineskins were new when we filled them, and look, now they are leaking. Our garments and our sandals are worn-out from a very long journey.'”
Estos cueros de vino también los henchimos nuevos; hélos aquí: ya rotos: también estos nuestros vestidos y nuestros zapatos están ya viejos a causa de la grande longura del camino.
14 So the Israelites took some of their provisions, but they did not consult with Yahweh for guidance.
Y los hombres de Israel tomaron de su provisión del camino, y no preguntaron a la boca de Jehová.
15 Joshua made peace with them and made a covenant with them, to let them live. The leaders of the people also made a vow to them.
E hizo Josué paz con ellos, y trató con ellos alianza que les daría la vida. Y los príncipes del pueblo les juraron.
16 Three days after the Israelites made this covenant with them, they learned that they were their neighbors and that they lived nearby.
Pasados tres días después que hicieron con ellos el concierto, oyeron como eran sus vecinos, y que habitaban en medio de ellos.
17 Then the people of Israel set out and came to their cities on the third day. Their cities were Gibeon, Kephirah, Beeroth, and Kiriath Jearim.
Y partiéronse los hijos de Israel, y al tercero día llegaron a sus ciudades: y sus ciudades eran Gabaón, Cafira, Berot, y Cariat-jarim.
18 The people of Israel did not attack them because their leaders had taken an oath about them before Yahweh, the God of Israel. All the Israelites were grumbling against their leaders.
Y no los hirieron los hijos de Israel, por cuanto los príncipes del pueblo les habían jurado por Jehová el Dios de Israel: y toda la congregación murmuraba contra los príncipes.
19 But all the leaders said to all the people, “We have taken an oath concerning them by Yahweh, the God of Israel, and now we cannot harm them.
Mas todos los príncipes respondieron a toda la congregación: Nosotros les hemos jurado por Jehová Dios de Israel: por tanto ahora no les podemos tocar.
20 This is what we will do to them: To avoid any wrath that may come on us because of the oath we swore to them, we will let them live.”
Empero esto haremos con ellos: dejarlos hemos vivir, porque no venga ira sobre nosotros a causa del juramento que les hemos hecho.
21 The leaders said to their people, “Let them live.” So, the Gibeonites became cutters of wood and drawers of water for all the Israelites, just as the leaders said about them.
Y los príncipes les dijeron: Vivan; mas sean leñadores y aguadores para toda la congregación, como los príncipes les han dicho.
22 Joshua called for them and said, “Why did you deceive us when you said, 'We are very far from you', when you live right here among us?
Y llamándoles Josué les habló, diciendo: ¿Por qué nos habéis engañado, diciendo: Muy lejos habitamos de vosotros, morando en medio de nosotros?
23 Now, because of this, you are cursed and some of you will always be slaves, those who cut wood and draw water for the house of my God.”
Vosotros pues ahora seréis malditos, y no faltará de vosotros siervo, y quien corte la leña, y saque el agua para la casa de mi Dios.
24 They answered Joshua and said, “Because it was told to your servants that Yahweh your God commanded his servant Moses to give you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land before you—so we were very afraid for our lives because of you. That is why we did this thing.
Y ellos respondieron a Josué, y dijeron: Como fue dado a entender a tus siervos, que Jehová tu Dios había mandado a Moisés su siervo, que os había de dar toda la tierra, y que había de destruir todos los moradores de la tierra delante de vosotros; por esto temimos en grande manera de vosotros por nuestras vidas, e hicimos esto.
25 Now, look, you hold us in your power. Whatever seems good and right for you to do to us, do it.”
Ahora, pues, hénos aquí en tu mano, lo que te pareciere bueno y recto hacer de nosotros, eso haz.
26 So Joshua did this for them: He delivered them out of the control of the people of Israel, so that the Israelites did not kill them.
Y él lo hizo así, que los libró de la mano de los hijos de Israel, que no los matasen.
27 That day Joshua made the Gibeonites cutters of wood and drawers of water for the community, and for the altar of Yahweh, to this day, in the place that Yahweh chooses.
Y Josué los constituyó aquel día por leñadores y aguadores para la congregación, y para el altar de Jehová en el lugar que él escogiese, hasta hoy.
