Joshua 3
1 Joshua got up early in the morning, and they set out from Shittim. They came to the Jordan, he and all the people of Israel, and they camped there before they crossed over.
E Giosuè si levò la mattina di buon’ora e con tutti i figliuoli d’Israele partì da Sittim. Essi arrivarono al Giordano, e quivi fecero alto prima di passarlo.
2 After three days, the officers went through the middle of the camp;
In capo a tre giorni, gli ufficiali percorsero il campo,
3 they commanded the people, “When you see the ark of the covenant of Yahweh your God, and the priests from the Levites carrying it, you must leave this place and follow it.
e dettero quest’ordine al popolo: “Quando vedrete l’arca del patto dell’Eterno, ch’è il vostro Dio, portata dai sacerdoti levitici, partirete dal luogo ove siete accampati, e andrete dietro ad essa.
4 There must be a distance between you and it of about two thousand cubits. Do not come close to it, so that you can see which way to go, since you have not gone this way before.”
Però, vi sarà tra voi e l’arca la distanza d’un tratto di circa duemila cubiti; non v’accostate ad essa, affinché possiate veder bene la via per la quale dovete andare; poiché non siete ancora mai passati per questa via”.
5 Joshua said to the people, “Consecrate yourselves tomorrow, for Yahweh will do wonders among you.”
E Giosuè disse al popolo: “Santificatevi, poiché domani l’Eterno farà delle maraviglie in mezzo a voi”.
6 Then Joshua said to the priests, “Take up the ark of the covenant, and pass in front of the people.” So they picked up the ark of the covenant and went in front of people.
Poi Giosuè parlò ai sacerdoti, dicendo: “Prendete in ispalla l’arca del patto e passate davanti al popolo”. Ed essi presero in ispalla l’arca del patto e camminarono davanti al popolo.
7 Yahweh said to Joshua, “This day I will make you a great man in the eyes of all Israel. They will know that as I was with Moses, I will be with you.
E l’Eterno disse a Giosuè: “Oggi comincerò a renderti grande agli occhi di tutto Israele, affinché riconoscano che, come fui con Mosè, così sarò con te.
8 You will command the priests who carry the ark of the covenant, 'When you have come to the edge of the waters of the Jordan, you must stand still in the Jordan River.'”
E tu dà ai sacerdoti che portano l’arca del patto, quest’ordine: Quando sarete giunti alla riva delle acque del Giordano, vi fermerete nel Giordano”.
9 Then Joshua said to the people of Israel, “Come here, and listen to the words of Yahweh your God.
E Giosuè disse ai figliuoli d’Israele: “Fatevi dappresso e ascoltate le parole dell’Eterno, del vostro Dio”.
10 By this you will know that the living God is among you and will drive out from before you the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Hivites, the Perizzites, the Girgashites, the Amorites, and the Jebusites.
Poi Giosuè disse: “Da questo riconoscerete che l’Iddio vivente è in mezzo a voi, e ch’egli caccerà certamente d’innanzi a voi i Cananei, gli Hittei, gli Hivvei, i Ferezei, i Ghirgasei, gli Amorei e i Gebusei:
11 Look! The ark of the covenant of the Lord of all the earth crosses over ahead of you into the Jordan.
ecco, l’arca del patto del Signore di tutta la terra sta per passare davanti a voi per entrar nel Giordano.
12 Now choose twelve men from the tribes of Israel, one man from each.
Or dunque prendete dodici uomini fra le tribù d’Israele, uno per tribù.
13 When the soles of the feet of the priests that carry the ark of Yahweh, the Lord of all the earth, touch the waters of the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan will be cut off, and even the waters that flow down from upstream will stop flowing and they will stand in one heap.”
E avverrà che, non appena i sacerdoti recanti l’arca dell’Eterno, del Signor di tutta la terra, avran posato le piante de’ piedi nelle acque del Giordano, le acque del Giordano, che scendono d’insù, saranno tagliate, e si fermeranno in un mucchio”.
14 So when the people set out to cross over the Jordan, the priests that carried the ark of the covenant went ahead of the people.
E avvenne che quando il popolo fu uscito dalle sue tende per passare il Giordano, avendo dinanzi a lui i sacerdoti che portavano l’arca del patto,
15 As soon as those who were carrying the ark had come to the Jordan, and the feet of those who carried the chest were dipped in the edge of the water (now the Jordan overflows all its banks throughout the time of the harvest),
appena quelli che portavan l’arca giunsero al Giordano e i sacerdoti che portavan l’arca ebber tuffati i piedi nell’acqua della riva (il Giordano straripa da per tutto durante tutto il tempo della mèsse),
16 the waters that flowed down from upstream stood up in one heap. The water stopped flowing from a great distance. The waters stopped flowing from Adam, the city that is beside Zarethan, all the way down to the sea of the Negev, the Salt Sea. The people crossed over near Jericho.
le acque che scendevano d’insù si fermarono e si elevarono in un mucchio, a una grandissima distanza, fin presso la città di Adam che è allato di Tsartan; e quelle che scendevano verso il mare della pianura, il mar Salato, furono interamente separate da esse; e il popolo passò dirimpetto a Gerico.
17 The priests that carried the ark of the covenant of Yahweh stood on dry ground in the middle of the Jordan until all the people of Israel crossed over on dry ground.
E i sacerdoti che portavano l’arca del patto dell’Eterno stettero a piè fermo sull’asciutto, in mezzo al Giordano, mentre tutto Israele passava per l’asciutto, finché tutta la nazione ebbe finito di passare il Giordano.
