John 18
1 After Jesus spoke these words, he went out with his disciples to the other side of the Kidron Valley, where there was a garden into which he and his disciples entered.
Haec cum dixisset Iesus, egressus est cum discipulis suis trans Torrentem Cedron, ubi erat hortus, in quem introivit ipse, et discipuli eius.
2 Now Judas, who was going to betray him, also knew the place, for Jesus often went there with his disciples.
Sciebat autem et Iudas, qui tradebat eum, locum: quia frequenter Iesus convenerat illuc cum discipulis suis.
3 Then Judas, leading a group of soldiers and some officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, went there with lanterns, torches, and weapons.
Iudas ergo cum accepisset cohortem, et a Pontificibus, et Pharisaeis ministros, venit illuc cum laternis, et facibus, et armis.
4 Then Jesus, who knew all the things that were happening to him, went forward and asked them, “Who are you looking for?”
Iesus itaque sciens omnia, quae ventura erant super eum, processit, et dixit eis: Quem quaeritis?
5 They answered him, “Jesus of Nazareth.” Jesus said to them, “I am.” Judas, who betrayed him, was also standing with the soldiers.
Responderunt ei: Iesum Nazarenum. Dicit eis Iesus: Ego sum. Stabat autem et Iudas, qui tradebat eum, cum ipsis.
6 So when he said to them, “I am,” they went backward and fell to the ground.
Ut ergo dixit eis: Ego sum: abierunt retrorsum, et ceciderunt in terram.
7 Then again he asked them, “Who are you looking for?” Again they said, “Jesus of Nazareth.”
Iterum ergo interrogavit eos: Quem quaeritis? Illi autem dixerunt: Iesum Nazarenum.
8 Jesus answered, “I told you that I am. So if you are looking for me, let these go.”
Respondit Iesus: Dixi vobis, quia ego sum: si ergo me quaeritis, sinite hos abire.
9 This was in order to fulfill the word that he said: “Of those whom you have given me, I lost no one.”
Ut impleretur sermo, quem dixit: Quia quos dedisti mihi, non perdidi ex eis quemquam.
10 Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his right ear. Now the name of the servant was Malchus.
Simon ergo Petrus habens gladium eduxit eum: et percussit pontificis servum: et abscidit auriculam eius dexteram. Erat autem nomen servo Malchus.
11 Jesus said to Peter, “Put the sword back into its sheath. Should I not drink the cup that the Father has given me?”
Dixit ergo Iesus Petro: Mitte gladium tuum in vaginam. Calicem, quem dedit mihi Pater, non vis ut bibam illum?
12 So the group of soldiers and the captain, and the officers of the Jews, seized Jesus and tied him up.
Cohors ergo, et tribunus, et ministri Iudaeorum comprehenderunt Iesum, et ligaverunt eum:
13 They led him first to Annas, for he was father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priest that year.
Et adduxerunt eum ad Annam primum, erat enim socer Caiphae, qui erat pontifex anni illius.
14 Now Caiaphas was the one who had given the advice to the Jews that it would be better that one man die for the people.
Erat autem Caiphas, qui consilium dederat Iudaeis: Quia expedit, unum hominem mori pro populo.
15 Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple. Now that disciple was known to the high priest, and he entered with Jesus into the courtyard of the high priest;
Sequebatur autem Iesum Simon Petrus, et alius discipulus. Discipulus autem ille erat notus pontifici, et introivit cum Iesu in atrium pontificis.
16 but Peter was standing at the door outside. So the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the female doorkeeper and he brought Peter in.
Petrus autem stabat ad ostium foris. Exivit ergo discipulus alius, qui erat notus pontifici, et dixit ostiariae: et introduxit Petrum.
17 Then the female servant, the doorkeeper, said to Peter, “Are you not also one of the disciples of this man?” He said, “I am not.”
Dicit ergo Petro ancilla ostiaria: Numquid et tu ex discipulis es hominis istius? Dicit ille: Non sum.
18 Now the servants and the officers were standing there, and they had made a charcoal fire, for it was cold, and they were warming themselves. Peter was also with them, standing there and warming himself.
Stabant autem servi, et ministri ad prunas: quia frigus erat, et calefaciebant se: erat autem cum eis et Petrus stans, et calefaciens se.
19 The high priest then asked Jesus about his disciples and his teaching.
Pontifex ergo interrogavit Iesum de discipulis suis, et de doctrina eius.
20 Jesus answered him, “I have spoken openly to the world. I was always teaching in synagogues and in the temple where all the Jews come together. I said nothing in secret.
Respondit ei Iesus: Ego palam locutus sum mundo: ego semper docui in synagoga, et in templo, quo omnes Iudaei conveniunt: et in occulto locutus sum nihil.
21 Why did you ask me? Ask those who have heard me about what I said. Look, these people know what I said.”
Quid me interrogas? interroga eos, qui audierunt quid locutus sim ipsis: ecce hi sciunt quae dixerim ego.
22 When Jesus had said this, one of the officers standing there struck Jesus and said, “Is that how you answer the high priest?”
Haec autem cum dixisset, unus assistens ministrorum dedit alapam Iesu, dicens: Sic respondes pontifici?
23 Jesus answered him, “If I spoke wrongly, testify about the wrong, but if rightly, why do you hit me?”
Respondit ei Iesus: Si male locutus sum, testimonium perhibe de malo: si autem bene, quid me caedis?
24 Then Annas sent him tied up to Caiaphas the high priest.
Et misit eum Annas ligatum ad Caipham pontificem.
25 Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. The people then said to him, “Are you not also one of his disciples?” He denied it and said, “I am not.”
Erat autem Simon Petrus stans, et calefaciens se. Dixerunt ergo ei: Numquid et tu ex discipulis eius es? Negavit ille, et dixit: Non sum.
26 One of the servants of the high priest, who was a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, said, “Did I not see you in the garden with him?”
Dicit ei unus ex servis pontificis, cognatus eius, cuius abscidit Petrus auriculam: Nonne ego te vidi in horto cum illo?
27 Peter then denied again, and immediately the rooster crowed.
Iterum ergo negavit Petrus: et statim gallus cantavit.
28 Then they led Jesus from Caiaphas to the government headquarters. It was early in the morning, and they did not enter the government headquarters so that they would not be defiled but would eat the Passover.
Adducunt ergo Iesum a Caipha in praetorium. Erat autem mane: et ipsi non introierunt in praetorium, ut non contaminarentur, sed ut manducarent Pascha.
29 So Pilate went out to them and said, “What accusation are you bringing against this man?”
Exivit ergo Pilatus ad eos foras, et dixit: Quam accusationem affertis adversus hominem hunc?
30 They answered and said to him, “If this man was not an evildoer, we would not have given him over to you.”
Responderunt, et dixerunt ei: Si non esset hic malefactor, non tibi tradidissemus eum.
31 Pilate therefore said to them, “Take him yourselves, and judge him according to your law.” The Jews said to him, “It is not lawful for us to put any man to death.”
Dixit ergo eis Pilatus: Accipite eum vos, et secundum legem vestram iudicate eum. Dixerunt ergo ei Iudaei: Nobis non licet interficere quemquam.
32 They said this so that the word of Jesus would be fulfilled which he had spoken to indicate by what kind of death he would die.
Ut sermo Iesu impleretur, quem dixit, significans qua morte esset moriturus.
33 Then Pilate entered the government headquarters again and called Jesus and he said to him, “Are you the King of the Jews?”
Introivit ergo iterum in praetorium Pilatus, et vocavit Iesum, et dixit ei: Tu es rex Iudaeorum?
34 Jesus answered, “Do you speak from yourself, or did others speak to you about me?”
Respondit Iesus: A temetipso hoc dicis, an alii dixerunt tibi de me?
35 Pilate answered, “I am not a Jew, am I? Your own people and the chief priests gave you over to me. What did you do?”
Respondit Pilatus: Numquid ego Iudaeus sum? Gens tua, et pontifices tui tradiderunt te mihi: quid fecisti?
36 Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were part of this world, then my servants would fight so that I would not be given over to the Jews. But now my kingdom is not from here.”
Respondit Iesus: Regnum meum non est de hoc mundo. si ex hoc mundo esset regnum meum, ministri mei utique decertarent ut non traderer Iudaeis: nunc autem regnum meum non est hinc.
37 Pilate then said to him, “Are you a king then?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this purpose I have been born, and for this purpose I have come into the world, so that I would bear witness to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice.”
Dixit itaque ei Pilatus: Ergo rex es tu? Respondit Iesus: Tu dicis quia rex sum ego. Ego in hoc natus sum, et ad hoc veni in mundum, ut testimonium perhibeam veritati: omnis, qui est ex veritate, audit vocem meam.
38 Pilate said to him, “What is truth?” When he had said this, he went out again to the Jews and said to them, “I find no guilt in this man.
Dicit ei Pilatus: Quid est veritas? Et cum hoc dixisset, iterum exivit ad Iudaeos, et dicit eis: Ego nullam invenio in eo causam.
39 But you have the custom that I release one person to you at the Passover. So do you want me to release the King of the Jews to you?”
Est autem consuetudo vobis ut unum dimittam vobis in Pascha: vultis ergo dimittam vobis regem Iudaeorum?
40 Then they cried out again and said, “Not this man, but Barabbas.” Now Barabbas was a robber.
Clamaverunt rursum omnes, dicentes: Non hunc, sed Barabbam. Erat autem Barabbas latro.
