Job 12
1 Then Job answered and said,
Maar Job antwoordde en zeide:
2 “No doubt you are the people; wisdom will die with you.
Trouwens, omdat gijlieden het volk zijt, zo zal de wijsheid met ulieden sterven!
3 But I have understanding as well as you; I am not inferior to you. Indeed, who does not know such things as these?
Ik heb ook een hart even als gijlieden, ik zwicht niet voor u; en bij wien zijn niet dergelijke dingen?
4 I am something for my neighbor to laugh at— I, one who called on God and who was answered by him! I, a just and blameless man—I am now something to laugh at.
Ik ben het, die zijn vriend een spot is, maar roepende tot God, Die hem verhoort; de rechtvaardige en oprechte is een spot.
5 In the thought of someone who is at ease, there is contempt for misfortune; he thinks in a way that brings more misfortune to those whose foot is slipping.
Hij is een verachte fakkel, naar de mening desgenen, die gerust is; hij is gereed met den voet te struikelen.
6 The tents of robbers prosper, and those who provoke God feel secure; their own hands are their gods.
De tenten der verwoesters hebben rust, en die God tergen, hebben verzekerdheden, om hetgene God met Zijn hand toebrengt.
7 But now ask the beasts, and they will teach you; ask the birds of the heavens, and they will tell you.
En waarlijk, vraag toch de beesten, en elkeen van die zal het u leren; en het gevogelte des hemels, dat zal het u te kennen geven.
8 Or speak to the earth, and it will teach you; the fish of the sea will declare to you.
Of spreek tot de aarde, en zij zal het u leren; ook zullen het u de vissen der zee vertellen.
9 Which animal among all these does not know that the hand of Yahweh has done this?
Wie weet niet uit alle deze, dat de hand des HEEREN dit doet?
10 In his hand is the life of every living thing and the breath of all mankind.
In Wiens hand de ziel is van al wat leeft, en de geest van alle vlees des mensen.
11 Does not the ear test words just as the palate tastes its food?
Zal niet het oor de woorden proeven, gelijk het gehemelte voor zich de spijze smaakt?
12 With aged men is wisdom; in length of days is understanding.
In de stokouden is de wijsheid, en in de langheid der dagen het verstand.
13 With God are wisdom and might; he has counsel and understanding.
Bij Hem is wijsheid en macht; Hij heeft raad en verstand.
14 See, he breaks down, and it cannot be built again; if he imprisons someone, there can be no release.
Ziet, Hij breekt af, en het zal niet herbouwd worden; Hij besluit iemand, en er zal niet opengedaan worden.
15 See, if he withholds the waters, they dry up; and if he sends them out, they overwhelm the land.
Ziet, Hij houdt de wateren op, en zij drogen uit; ook laat Hij ze uit, en zij keren de aarde om.
16 With him are strength and wisdom; people who are deceived and the deceiver are both in his power.
Bij Hem is kracht en wijsheid; Zijns is de dwalende, en die doet dwalen.
17 He leads counselors away barefoot in sorrow; he turns judges into fools.
Hij voert de raadsheren beroofd weg, en de rechters maakt Hij uitzinnig,
18 He takes off the chain of authority from kings; he wraps a cloth about their waists.
Den band der koningen maakt Hij los, en Hij bindt den gordel aan hun lenden.
19 He leads priests away barefoot in sorrow and overthrows mighty people.
Hij voert de oversten beroofd weg, en de machtigen keert Hij om.
20 He removes the speech of those who had been trusted and takes away the understanding of the elders.
Hij beneemt den getrouwen de spraak, en der ouden oordeel neemt Hij weg.
21 He pours contempt upon princes and unfastens the belt of strong people.
Hij giet verachting over de prinsen uit, en Hij verslapt den riem der geweldigen.
22 He reveals the deep things of darkness and brings deep shadows into the light.
Hij openbaart de diepten uit de duisternis, en des doods schaduwe brengt Hij voort in het licht.
23 He makes nations strong, and he also destroys them; He enlarges nations, and he also leads them along as prisoners.
Hij vermenigvuldigt de volken, en verderft ze; Hij breidt de volken uit, en leidt ze.
24 He takes away understanding from the leaders of the people of the earth; he causes them to wander in a wilderness where there is no path.
Hij neemt het hart van de hoofden des volks der aarde weg, en doet hen dwalen in het woeste, waar geen weg is.
25 They grope in the dark without light; he makes them stagger like a drunk man.
Zij tasten in de duisternis, waar geen licht is; en Hij doet hen dwalen, als een dronkaard.
