Jeremiah 51
1 “Yahweh says this: See, I am about to stir up a wind of destruction against Babylon and against those who live in Leb Kamai.
Voici ce que dit le Seigneur: Voilà que moi je susciterai sur Babylone et sur ses habitants, qui ont élevé leur cœur contre moi, comme un vent pestilentiel.
2 I will send foreigners to Babylon. They will scatter her and devastate her land, for they will come against her from all around on the day of disaster.
Et j’enverrai contre Babylone des gens le van à la main; et ils la vanneront, et ils ruineront sa terre. De tous côtés ils sont venus sur elle au jour de son affliction.
3 Do not let the archers bend their bows; do not let them put on armor. Do not spare her young men; set her whole army apart for destruction.
Que celui qui tend son arc ne le tende pas, et que nul ne monte cuirassé; n’épargnez point ses jeunes hommes; tuez toute sa milice.
4 For the wounded people will fall in the land of the Chaldeans; those who are killed will fall in her streets.
Et les tués tomberont dans la terre des Chaldéens, et les blessés dans ses provinces.
5 For Israel and Judah are not forsaken by their God, by Yahweh of hosts, although their land is filled with offenses committed against the Holy One of Israel.
Parce qu’Israël et Juda ne sont pas veufs de leur Dieu, le Seigneur des armées; mais leur terre a été remplie de crimes contre le saint d’Israël.
6 Flee from the midst of Babylon; let each man save himself. Do not perish in her iniquity. For it is the time of Yahweh's vengeance. He will repay all of it to her.
Fuyez du milieu de Babylone, et que chacun sauve son âme; ne vous taisez point sur son iniquité; car c’est le temps de la vengeance du Seigneur; lui-même la rétribuera.
7 Babylon was a golden cup in the hand of Yahweh that made all the world drunk; nations drank her wine and became insane.
Babylone a été une coupe d’or dans la main du Seigneur; elle a enivré toute la terre; les nations ont bu de son vin, c’est pour cela qu’elles ont chancelé.
8 Babylon will fall suddenly and be destroyed. Wail for her! Give her medicine for her pain; perhaps she can be healed.
Babylone est tombée subitement, et elle a été brisée; poussez des hurlements sur elle; prenez de la résine pour sa douleur, afin de voir si elle guérira.
9 'We wished to heal Babylon, but she is not healed. Let us all leave her and go away, to our own land. For her guilt reaches up to the heavens; it is piled up to the clouds.
Nous avons soigné Babylone, et elle n’a pas été guérie; abandonnons-la et allons chacun en notre terre, parce que jusqu’aux cieux est parvenu son jugement, et qu’il s’est élevé jusqu’aux nues.
10 Yahweh has declared our innocence. Come, let us tell in Zion the deeds of Yahweh our God.'
Le Seigneur a fait ressortir notre justice; venez, et racontons dans Sion l’ouvrage du Seigneur, notre Dieu.
11 Sharpen the arrows and take up the shields. Yahweh is stirring up the spirit of the king of the Medes in a plan to destroy Babylon. This is for Yahweh's vengeance, vengeance for the destruction of his temple.
Aiguisez les flèches, remplissez les carquois; le Seigneur a suscité l’esprit des rois des Mèdes, et sa pensée est contre Babylone afin de la perdre; parce que c’est la vengeance du Seigneur, la vengeance de son temple.
12 Lift up a banner over Babylon's walls; make the watch strong; set up watchmen; prepare the ambushes; for the LORD will do what he has said concerning the inhabitants of Babylon.
Sur les murs de Babylone levez l’étendard, augmentez la garde, posez des sentinelles, préparez les embuscades, parce que le Seigneur a résolu et il a accompli tout ce qu’il a dit contre les habitants de Babylone.
13 You people who live by many streams of water, you people who are rich with treasures, your end has come. The thread of your life is now cut short.
Toi qui habites sur de grandes eaux, riche en trésors, ta fin est venue, c’est le fondement de ta destruction.
14 Yahweh of hosts has sworn by his own life, 'I will fill you with men, like a swarm of locusts, and they will raise a battle cry against you.'
Le Seigneur des armées a juré par son âme, disant: Je te remplirai d’hommes comme de bruchus, et on entonnera sur toi un chant de joie.
15 He has made the earth by his power; he set in place the world by his wisdom. By his understanding he stretched out the heavens.
C’est lui qui a fait la terre par sa puissance, préparé l’univers par sa sagesse, et par sa prudence étendu les cieux.
16 When he thunders, there is the roar of waters in the heavens, for he brings up the mist from the ends of the earth. He makes lightning for rain and sends out wind from his storehouses.
Lorsqu’il fait entendre sa voix, les eaux s’amassent dans le ciel; c’est lui qui fait monter les nuées des extrémités de la terre; il a converti les éclairs en pluie, et il a tiré les vents de ses trésors.
17 Every man has become ignorant, without knowledge. Every metalworker is put to shame by his idols. For his cast images are frauds, and there is no life in them.
Tout homme est devenu insensé par sa propre science; tout fondeur a été confondu par son image taillée au ciseau, parce que c’est une chose mensongère qu’il a fondue, et que la vie n’y est pas.
18 They are useless, the work of mockers; they will perish at the time of their punishment.
Vaines sont leurs œuvres et dignes de risée; au temps de leur visite elles périront.
19 But God, the portion of Jacob, is not like these, for he is the molder of all things. Israel is the tribe of his inheritance; Yahweh of hosts is his name.
Il n’en est pas ainsi de la part de Jacob, parce que celui qui a fait toutes ces choses est lui-même son partage; et Israël est le sceptre de son héritage; le Seigneur des armées est son nom.
20 You are my war hammer, my weapon for battle. With you I will smash nations and destroy kingdoms.
Tu brises pour moi des instruments de guerre, et je briserai par toi des nations, et je perdrai entièrement par toi des royaumes;
21 With you I will smash horses and their riders; with you I will smash chariots and their drivers.
Et je briserai par toi le cheval et celui qui le monte; et je briserai par toi le char et celui qui le monte;
22 With you I will smash each man and woman; with you I will smash the old and the young. With you I will smash the young men and the virgin girls.
Et je briserai par toi l’homme et la femme; et je briserai par toi le vieillard et l’enfant; et je briserai par toi le jeune homme et la vierge;
23 With you I will smash the shepherds and their flocks; with you I will smash the plowmen and their teams. With you I will smash the governors and officials.
Et je briserai par toi le pasteur et son troupeau; et je briserai par toi le laboureur et ses bœufs attachés au joug; et je briserai par toi les chefs et les magistrats.
24 For in your sight I will pay Babylon and all the inhabitants of Chaldea for all of the evil that they did in Zion—this is Yahweh's declaration.
Et je rendrai à Babylone et à tous les habitants de la Chaldée tout leur mal, qu’ils ont fait dans Sion, à vos yeux, dit le Seigneur.
25 See, I am against you, mountain of destruction—this is Yahweh's declaration—which destroys the whole earth. I will stretch out my hand against you, and roll you down from the cliffs, and make you a burned-out mountain.
Et voilà que je viens à toi, montagne pernicieuse, dit le Seigneur, qui corromps toute la terre; et j’étendrai ma main sur toi, et je t’arracherai d’entre les rochers, et je ferai de toi une montagne en combustion.
26 So they will not take from you any stone to construct a building's corner or foundation; for you will become an everlasting devastation—this is Yahweh's declaration.
Et on ne tirera pas de toi une pierre pour un angle, ni une pierre pour des fondements; mais tu seras éternellement détruite, dit le Seigneur.
27 Lift up a banner over the earth. Blow the trumpet over the nations. Call the nations to attack her: Ararat, Minni, and Ashkenaz. Appoint a commander to attack her; bring up horses like swarming locusts.
Levez l’étendard sur la terre; sonnez la trompette parmi des nations; consacrez contre elle des nations; annoncez aux rois d’Ararat, de Menni et d’Ascenez de marcher contre elle; dénombrez contre elle les soldats du Taphsar; amenez contre elle le cheval, comme le bruchus armé d’un aiguillon.
28 Prepare the nations to attack her: The kings of the Medes and his governors, all of his officials and all the lands under his rule.
Consacrez contre elle des nations, les rois de Médie, ses chefs et tous ses magistrats, et toute la terre soumise à sa puissance.
29 For the land will shake and be in anguish, since Yahweh's plans continue against Babylon, to make the land of Babylon a wasteland where there is no inhabitant.
Et la terre sera agitée et troublée; parce que contre Babylone s’éveillera la pensée du Seigneur, afin de rendre la terre de Babylone déserte et inhabitable.
30 The soldiers in Babylon have stopped fighting; they stay in their strongholds. Their strength has failed; they have become women—her homes are on fire, the bars of her gates are broken.
Les forts de Babylone ont cessé le combat; ils sont demeurés dans les citadelles: leur force a été dévorée, et ils sont devenus comme des femmes; leurs tabernacles ont été brûlés, leurs verrous ont été brisés.
31 A messenger runs to proclaim to another messenger, and a runner tells another runner to report to the king of Babylon that his city has been taken from end to end.
Un coureur viendra au-devant d’un coureur, et un messager à la rencontre d’un messager, afin d’annoncer au roi de Babylone que sa ville a été prise d’un bout à l’autre;
32 So the fords over the river are seized; the enemy is burning the reed marshes, and Babylon's fighting men are confused.
Et que les gués sont occupés, et que le feu a été mis aux marais, et que les hommes de guerre ont été bouleversés.
33 For Yahweh of hosts, God of Israel, says this: The daughter of Babylon is like a threshing floor. It is time to trample her down. In a little while the time of harvest will come to her.
Parce que voici ce que dit le Seigneur des armées, Dieu d’Israël: La fille de Babylone est comme une aire: c’est le temps de son battage; encore un peu et viendra le temps de sa moisson.
34 'Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon has devoured me, he has driven me into confusion and has made me an empty pot. Like a monster he has swallowed me, he has filled his stomach with my delicious foods, and then he has spit me out.'
Il m’a mangée; il m’a dévorée, Nabuchodonosor, roi de Babylone, il m’a rendue comme un vase vide, il m’a engloutie comme un dragon, il a rempli son ventre de ce que j’avais de plus délicieux, et il m’a rejetée.
35 The one who lives in Zion will say, 'May the violence done to me and my flesh be on Babylon.' Jerusalem will say, 'May my blood be on the inhabitants of Chaldea.'
L’iniquité commise contre moi et ma chair est retombée sur Babylone, dit l’habitation de Sion, et mon sang sur les habitants de la Chaldée, dit Jérusalem.
36 Therefore Yahweh says this: See, I am about to plead your case and bring about vengeance for you. For I will dry up Babylon's waters and make her springs run dry.
À cause de cela, voici ce que dit le Seigneur: Voilà que moi je jugerai ta cause, et j’exercerai ta vengeance: je sécherai sa mer, et je tarirai sa source.
37 Babylon will become heaps of rubble, a den of jackals, a horror, an object of hissing, where there are no inhabitants.
Et Babylone sera un monceau de pierres, une demeure de dragons, un objet de stupeur et de sifflement, parce qu’il n’y a point d’habitant.
38 The Babylonians will roar together like young lions. They will growl like lion cubs.
Tous ensemble ils rugiront comme des lions, ils secoueront leur crinière comme de petits bons.
39 When they become hot with greed, I will make a feast for them; I will make them drunk so they become happy, and then sleep an unending sleep and not wake up—this is Yahweh's declaration—
Dans leur chaleur je leur donnerai leurs boissons, et je les enivrerai, afin qu’ils s’assoupissent, et qu’ils dorment un sommeil éternel, et qu’ils ne se relèvent point, dit le Seigneur.
40 I will send them down like lambs to the slaughter, like rams with male goats.
Je les conduirai comme des agneaux pour servir de victimes, comme des béliers avec des chevreaux.
41 How Babylon has been captured! So the praise of all the earth is seized. How Babylon has become a ruined place among the nations.
Comment a été prise Sésach? et comment a été emportée la ville illustre dans toute la terre? comment Babylone est-elle devenue un objet de stupeur parmi les nations?
42 The sea has come up over Babylon! She is covered with its roaring waves.
La mer est montée sur Babylone; par la multitude de ses efforts elle a été couverte.
43 Her cities have become a desolation, a dry land and a wilderness, a land that no one inhabits, and no human being passes through.
Ses cités sont devenues un objet de stupeur, une terre inhabitable et déserte, une terre dans laquelle nul n’habite, et où ne passe pas le fils d’un homme.
44 So I will punish Bel in Babylon; I will bring out from his mouth what he swallowed, and the nations will no longer flow to him with their offerings. The walls of Babylon will fall.
Et je visiterai Bel à Babylone, et je ferai sortir de sa bouche ce qu’il avait absorbé; et les nations n’afflueront plus vers lui, puisque le mur même de Babylone croulera.
45 Go out from her midst, my people. Let each of you save his own life from the fury of my wrath.
Sortez d’au milieu d’elle, mon peuple, afin que chacun sauve son âme de la colère du Seigneur;
46 Do not let your hearts be timid or fear the news that is heard in the land, for the news will come one year. After it in the next year there will be news, and violence will be in the land. Ruler will be against ruler.
Et pour que votre cœur ne mollisse pas, et que vous ne craigniez pas le bruit qui s’entendra sur la terre; car dans une année viendra une nouvelle; et après cette année, une autre nouvelle; et l’iniquité sur la terre, et dominateur sur dominateur.
47 Therefore, see, days are coming when I will punish the carved idols of Babylon. All of her land will be ashamed, and all of her slaughtered ones will fall in her midst.
À cause de cela, voilà que des jours viennent, et je visiterai les images taillées au ciseau de Babylone; et toute sa terre sera couverte de confusion, et tous ses tués tomberont au milieu d’elle.
48 Then the heavens and the earth, and all that is in them will rejoice over Babylon. For destroyers will come for her from the north—this is Yahweh's declaration.
Et les cieux et la terre et tout ce qui est en eux loueront le Seigneur au sujet de Babylone; parce que ses spoliateurs viendront de l’aquilon, dit le Seigneur.
49 As Babylon has made the killed of Israel fall, so the killed of all her land will fall in Babylon.
Et comme Babylone a fait que des tués sont tombés en Israël, ainsi de Babylone tomberont des tués dans toute la terre.
50 Survivors of the sword, go away! Do not stay still. Call Yahweh to mind from far away; let Jerusalem come to mind.
Vous qui avez fui le glaive, venez, ne vous arrêtez point; souvenez-vous de loin du Seigneur, et que Jérusalem monte dans votre cœur.
51 We are ashamed, for we have heard insults; reproach has covered our faces, for foreigners have entered the holy places of Yahweh's house.
Nous avons été confondus, parce que nous avons entendu l’opprobre; l’ignominie a couvert nos faces, parce que sont venus des étrangers contre le sanctuaire de la maison du Seigneur.
52 Therefore, see, days are coming—this is Yahweh's declaration—when I will punish her carved idols, and the wounded people will groan in all of her land.
À cause de cela, voilà que des jours viennent, dit le Seigneur, et je visiterai ses images taillées au ciseau; et dans toute sa terre mugiront des blessés.
53 For even if Babylon went up to the heavens or fortified her highest fortresses, destroyers would come from me to her—this is Yahweh's declaration.
Quand Babylone serait montée jusqu’au ciel, et qu’elle aurait affermi en haut sa force, de moi lui viendront ses dévastateurs, dit le Seigneur.
54 A shout of distress came from Babylon, a great collapse from the land of the Chaldeans.
Voix de clameur qui s’élève de Babylone, et grande destruction de la terre des Chaldéens;
55 For Yahweh is destroying Babylon. He is causing her loud voice to perish. Their enemies roar like the waves of many waters; their noise becomes very strong.
Parce que le Seigneur a ravagé Babylone, et détruit en elle une grande voix; et leurs flots retentiront comme de grandes eaux; leur voix a eu un retentissement;
56 For the destroyers have come against her—against Babylon!—and her warriors have been captured. Their bows are broken, for Yahweh is the God of vengeance; he will surely carry out this repayment.
Parce qu’il est venu sur elle, c’est-à-dire sur Babylone, un spoliateur, et que ses braves ont été pris, et que leur arc a perdu sa force; parce que le Seigneur, puissant vengeur, la rétribuera très certainement.
57 For I will make her princes, her sages, her officials, and her soldiers drunk, and they will sleep in an unending sleep and never wake up —this is the King's declaration: Yahweh of hosts is his name.
Et j’enivrerai ses princes, et ses sages, et ses chefs, et ses magistrats, et ses braves; et ils dormiront un sommeil éternel; et ils ne se réveilleront pas, dit le roi; le Seigneur des armées est son nom.
58 Yahweh of hosts says this: The thick walls of Babylon will be completely demolished, and her high gates will be burned. Then the peoples coming to her aid will labor uselessly; everything that the nations try to do for her will be burned up.”
Voici ce que dit le Seigneur des armées: Ce mur très large de Babylone sera sapé entièrement; et ses portes élevées seront brûlées par le feu; les travaux des peuples seront réduits au néant, et ceux des nations seront livrés au feu et périront entièrement.
59 This is the word that Jeremiah the prophet commanded Seraiah son of Neriah son of Mahseiah when he went with Zedekiah king of Judah to Babylon in the fourth year of his reign. Now Seraiah was a chief officer.
Ordre que donna Jérémie, le prophète, à Saraïas, fils de Nérias, lorsqu’il allait avec le roi Sédécias, à Babylone, la quatrième année de son règne; or Saraïas était prince de la prophétie.
60 For Jeremiah had written in a scroll about all the disaster that was going to come on Babylon—all these words that were written about Babylon.
Et Jérémie écrivit tout le mal qui devait venir sur Babylone dans son livre, toutes ces paroles qui ont été écrites contre Babylone.
61 Jeremiah said to Seraiah, “When you go to Babylon, then you will see and you will read these words aloud.
Et Jérémie dit à Saraïas: Lorsque tu seras venu à Babylone, et que tu auras vu, et que tu auras lu toutes ces paroles,
62 Then you will say, 'Yahweh, you yourself have declared that you would destroy this place, and that no man or animal will live in it, and it will be desolate forever.'
Tu diras: Seigneur, c’est vous qui avez parlé contre ce lieu-ci, afin de le perdre entièrement, pour qu’il n’y ait personne qui l’habite depuis l’homme jusqu’à la bête, et afin qu’il soit une éternelle solitude.
63 Then when you have finished reading this scroll, tie a stone to it and throw it into the middle of the Euphrates.
Et lorsque tu auras achevé de lire ce livre, tu y attacheras une pierre et tu le jetteras au milieu de l’Euphrate;
64 Say, 'Babylon will sink like this. It will not arise because of the disaster that I am sending against it, and they will fall.'” Jeremiah's words end here.
Et tu diras: Ainsi sera submergée Babylone, et elle ne se relèvera pas, à cause de l’affliction que moi j’amène sur elle; et elle sera détruite. Jusqu’ici ce sont les paroles de Jérémie.
