< Jeremiah 47 >
1 This is the word of Yahweh that came to Jeremiah the prophet concerning the Philistines. This word came to him before Pharaoh attacked Gaza.
That which has been the word of YHWH to Jeremiah concerning the Philistines, before Pharaoh strikes Gaza:
2 “Yahweh says this: See, floods of water are rising in the north. They will be like an overflowing river! Then they will overflow the land and everything in it, its cities and its inhabitants! So everyone will shout for help, and all the inhabitants of the land will lament.
“Thus said YHWH: Behold, waters are going up from the north, And have been for an overflowing stream, And they overflow the land and its fullness, The city, and those dwelling in it, And men have cried out, And every inhabitant of the land has howled.
3 At the sound of the stamping of their strong horses' hooves, at the roar of their chariots and the noise of their wheels, fathers will not help their children because of their own weakness.
From the sound of the stamping of the hooves of his mighty ones, From the rushing of his chariot, The noise of his wheels, Fathers have not turned to sons, From feebleness of hands,
4 For the day is coming that will devastate all of the Philistines, to cut off from Tyre and Sidon every survivor who wants to help them. For Yahweh is devastating the Philistines, those who remain from the island of Caphtor.
Because of the day that has come to spoil all the Philistines, To cut off every helping remnant from Tyre and from Sidon. For YHWH is spoiling the Philistines, The remnant of the island of Caphtor.
5 Baldness will come upon Gaza. As for Ashkelon, the people who are left in their valley will be made silent. How long will you cut yourself in mourning?
Baldness has come to Gaza, Ashkelon has been cut off, O remnant of their valley, Until when do you cut yourself?
6 Woe, sword of Yahweh! How long will it be until you become silent? Go back to your scabbard! Stop and be silent.
Behold, sword of YHWH, until when are you not quiet? Be removed to your sheath, rest and cease.
7 How can it rest when Yahweh has commanded it, when he has ordered it to attack Ashkelon and the coastlands along the sea?”
How will it be quiet, And YHWH has given a charge to it, Against Ashkelon and against the seashore? He has appointed it there!”
