< Isaiah 63 >

1 Who is this who comes from Edom, clothed in red from Bozrah? Who is he in royal clothing, marching confidently because of his great strength? It is I, speaking righteousness and powerfully able to save.
Who is this that cometh from Edom? In scarlet garments from Bozrah? This that is glorious in his apparel, Proud in the greatness of his strength? I that proclaim deliverance, And am mighty to save.
2 Why are your clothes red, and why do they look like you have been treading grapes in a winepress?
Wherefore is thine apparel red, And thy garments like those of one that treadeth the wine-vat?
3 I have trodden grapes in the winepress alone, and no one from the nations joined me. I trod them in my anger and trampled them in my fury. Their blood is spattered on my clothes and stained all my clothes.
I have trodden the wine-vat alone, And of the nations there was none with me. And I trod them in mine anger, And I trampled them in my fury, So that their life-blood was sprinkled upon my garments. And I have stained all my apparel.
4 For I looked forward to the day of vengeance, and the year for my redemption had arrived.
For the day of vengeance was in my heart, And the year of my deliverance was come.
5 I looked, and there was no one to help. I wondered that there was none to help, but my own arm brought victory for me, and my strong anger drove me on.
And I looked, and there was none to help, And I wondered, that there was none to uphold; Therefore my own arm wrought salvation for me, And my fury, it sustained me.
6 I trampled down the peoples in my anger and made them drunk in my wrath, and I poured out their blood on the earth.
I trod down the nations in my anger; I crushed them in my fury, And spilled their blood upon the ground.
7 I will tell of the acts of Yahweh's covenant faithfulness, the praiseworthy deeds of Yahweh. I will tell of all that Yahweh has done for us, and of his great goodness to the house of Israel. This compassion he has shown us because of his mercy, and with many deeds of covenant faithfulness.
I will celebrate the mercy of Jehovah, the glory of Jehovah, According to all that he hath done for us; His great goodness to the house of Israel, Which he hath bestowed on it in his tender mercy, and his great kindness.
8 For he said, “For certain they are my people, children who are not disloyal.” He became their Savior.
He said, Truly they are my people; Children that will not be false; So he was their deliverer.
9 Through all their suffering, he suffered too, and the angel from his presence saved them. In his love and mercy he saved them, and he lifted them up and carried them through all the ancient times.
In all their straits they had no distress; An angel of his presence saved them; In his love and compassion he redeemed them, He took them up and bore them all the days of old.
10 But they rebelled and grieved his Holy Spirit. So he became their enemy and fought against them.
But they rebelled, and grieved his holy spirit; Then did he change himself into their enemy; He himself fought against them.
11 His people thought about the ancient times of Moses. They said, “Where is God, who brought them up out of the sea with the shepherds of his flock? Where is God, who put his Holy Spirit among them?
Then remembered his people the ancient days, the days of Moses, [[saying, ]] Where is he that brought them up from the sea with the shepherd of his flock? Where is he that put his holy spirit within him?
12 Where is God, who made his glorious power go with the right hand of Moses, and divided the water before them, to make an everlasting name for himself?
That caused his glorious arm to accompany the right hand of Moses, That divided the water before them, To make to himself an everlasting name?
13 Where is God, who led them through the deep water? Like a horse running on flat land, they did not stumble.
That led them through the deep, As a horse through a desert, without stumbling?
14 As the cattle that go down into the valley, the Spirit of Yahweh gave them rest. So you led your people, to make yourself a name of praise.
As the herd descendeth into the valley, The spirit of Jehovah led them to rest. So didst thou lead thy people, To make for thyself a glorious name.
15 Look down from heaven and take notice from your holy and glorious habitation. Where are your zeal and your mighty acts? Your pity and your compassionate actions are kept from us.
Look down from heaven, and behold from thy holy and glorious habitation! Where is thy zeal and thy might? Thy pity and compassion for me, are they restrained?
16 For you are our father, though Abraham does not know us, and Israel does not recognize us, you, Yahweh, are our father. 'Our Redeemer' has been your name from ancient times.
Thou, surely, art our father; Abraham is ignorant of us, And Israel knoweth us not. Thou, O Jehovah, art our father; Our deliverer wast thou of old.
17 Yahweh, why do you make us wander from your ways and harden our hearts, so we do not obey you? Return for your servants' sake, the tribes of your inheritance.
Why, O Jehovah, dost thou suffer us to wander from thy ways, And harden our hearts against thy fear? Return, for thy servants' sake, The tribes of thine inheritance!
18 Your people possessed your holy place for a short time, but then our enemies trampled it.
But a little while did thy holy people possess the land; Then our enemies trampled upon thy sanctuary.
19 We have become like those over whom you never ruled, like those who were never called by your name.”
It has been with us as if thou hadst never ruled over us, As if we had not been called by thy name.
