Genesis 44
1 Joseph commanded the steward of his house, saying, “Fill the men's sacks with food, as much as they can carry, and put every man's money in his sack's opening.
さてヨセフは家づかさに命じて言った、「この人々の袋に、運べるだけ多くの食糧を満たし、めいめいの銀を袋の口に入れておきなさい。
2 Put my cup, the silver cup, in the sack's opening of the youngest, and also his money for the grain.” The steward did as Joseph had said.
またわたしの杯、銀の杯をあの年下の者の袋の口に、穀物の代金と共に入れておきなさい」。家づかさはヨセフの言葉のとおりにした。
3 The morning dawned, and the men were sent away, they and their donkeys.
夜が明けると、その人々と、ろばとは送り出されたが、
4 When they were out of the city but were not yet far off, Joseph said to his steward, “Get up, follow after the men, and when you overtake them, say to them, 'Why have you returned evil for good?
町を出て、まだ遠くへ行かないうちに、ヨセフは家づかさに言った、「立って、あの人々のあとを追いなさい。追いついて、彼らに言いなさい、『あなたがたはなぜ悪をもって善に報いるのですか。なぜわたしの銀の杯を盗んだのですか。
5 Is this not the cup from which my master drinks, and the cup that he uses for divination? You have done evil, this thing that you have done.'”
これはわたしの主人が飲む時に使い、またいつも占いに用いるものではありませんか。あなたがたのした事は悪いことです』」。
6 The steward overtook them and spoke these words to them.
家づかさが彼らに追いついて、これらの言葉を彼らに告げたとき、
7 They said to him, “Why does my master speak such words as these? Far be it from your servants that they would do such a thing.
彼らは言った、「わが主は、どうしてそのようなことを言われるのですか。しもべらは決してそのようなことはいたしません。
8 Look, the money that we found in our sacks' openings, we brought again to you out of the land of Canaan. How then could we steal out of your master's house silver or gold?
袋の口で見つけた銀でさえ、カナンの地からあなたの所に持ち帰ったほどです。どうして、われわれは御主人の家から銀や金を盗みましょう。
9 With whomever of your servants it is found, let him die, and we also will be my master's slaves.”
しもべらのうちのだれの所でそれが見つかっても、その者は死に、またわれわれはわが主の奴隷となりましょう」。
10 The steward said, “Now also let it be according to your words. He with whom the cup is found will be my slave, and you others will be innocent.”
家づかさは言った、「それではあなたがたの言葉のようにしよう。杯の見つかった者はわたしの奴隷とならなければならない。ほかの者は無罪です」。
11 Then each man hurried and brought his sack down to the ground, and each man opened his sack.
そこで彼らは、めいめい急いで袋を地におろし、ひとりひとりその袋を開いた。
12 The steward searched. He began with the oldest and finished with the youngest, and the cup was found in Benjamin's sack.
家づかさは年上から捜し始めて年下に終ったが、杯はベニヤミンの袋の中にあった。
13 Then they tore their clothes. Each man loaded his donkey and returned to the city.
そこで彼らは衣服を裂き、おのおの、ろばに荷を負わせて町に引き返した。
14 Judah and his brothers came to Joseph's house. He was still there, and they bowed before him to the ground.
ユダと兄弟たちとは、ヨセフの家にはいったが、ヨセフがなおそこにいたので、彼らはその前で地にひれ伏した。
15 Joseph said to them, “What is this that you have done? Do you not know that a man like me practices divination?”
ヨセフは彼らに言った、「あなたがたのこのしわざは何事ですか。わたしのような人は、必ず占い当てることを知らないのですか」。
16 Judah said, “What can we say to my master? What can we speak? Or how can we justify ourselves? God has found out the iniquity of your servants. Look, we are my master's slaves, both we and he also in whose hand the cup was found.”
ユダは言った、「われわれはわが主に何を言い、何を述べ得ましょう。どうしてわれわれは身の潔白をあらわし得ましょう。神がしもべらの罪をあばかれました。われわれと、杯を持っていた者とは共にわが主の奴隷となりましょう」。
17 Joseph said, “Far be it from me that I should do so. The man in whose hand the cup was found, that person will be my slave, but as for you others, go up in peace to your father.”
ヨセフは言った、「わたしは決してそのようなことはしない。杯を持っている者だけがわたしの奴隷とならなければならない。ほかの者は安全に父のもとへ上って行きなさい」。
18 Then Judah came near to him and said, “My master, please let your servant speak a word in my master's ears, and do let your anger burn against your servant, for you are just like Pharaoh.
この時ユダは彼に近づいて言った、「ああ、わが主よ、どうぞわが主の耳にひとこと言わせてください。しもべをおこらないでください。あなたはパロのようなかたです。
19 My master asked his servants, saying, 'Do you have a father or a brother?'
わが主はしもべらに尋ねて、『父があるか、また弟があるか』と言われたので、
20 We said to my master, 'We have a father, an old man, and a child of his old age, a little one. But his brother is dead, and he alone is left of his mother, and his father loves him.'
われわれはわが主に言いました、『われわれには老齢の父があり、また年寄り子の弟があります。その兄は死んで、同じ母の子で残っているのは、ただこれだけですから父はこれを愛しています』。
21 Then you said to your servants, 'Bring him down to me that I may see him.'
その時あなたはしもべらに言われました、『その者をわたしの所へ連れてきなさい。わたしはこの目で彼を見よう』。
22 After that, we said to my master, 'The boy cannot leave his father. For if he should leave his father his father would die.'
われわれはわが主に言いました。『その子供は父を離れることができません。もし父を離れたら父は死ぬでしょう』。
23 Then you said to your servants, 'Unless your youngest brother comes down with you, you will not see my face again.'
しかし、あなたはしもべらに言われました、『末の弟が一緒に下ってこなければ、おまえたちは再びわたしの顔を見ることはできない』。
24 Then it came about when we went up to your servant my father, we told him the words of my master.
それであなたのしもべである父のもとに上って、わが主の言葉を彼に告げました。
25 Our father said, 'Go again, buy us some food.'
ところで、父が『おまえたちは再び行って、われわれのために少しの食糧を買ってくるように』と言ったので、
26 Then we said, 'We cannot go down. If our youngest brother is with us, then will we go down, for we will not be able to see the man's face unless our youngest brother is with us.'
われわれは言いました、『われわれは下って行けません。もし末の弟が一緒であれば行きましょう。末の弟が一緒でなければ、あの人の顔を見ることができません』。
27 Your servant my father said to us, 'You know that my wife bore me two sons.
あなたのしもべである父は言いました、『おまえたちの知っているとおり、妻はわたしにふたりの子を産んだ。
28 One of them went out from me and I said, “Surely he is torn in pieces, and I have not seen him since.”
ひとりは外へ出たが、きっと裂き殺されたのだと思う。わたしは今になっても彼を見ない。
29 Now if you also take this one from me, and harm comes to him, you will bring down my gray hair with sorrow to Sheol.' (Sheol h7585)
もしおまえたちがこの子をもわたしから取って行って、彼が災に会えば、おまえたちは、しらがのわたしを悲しんで陰府に下らせるであろう』。 (Sheol h7585)
30 Now, therefore, when I come to your servant my father, and the lad is not with us, since his life is bound up in the boy's life,
わたしがあなたのしもべである父のもとに帰って行くとき、もしこの子供が一緒にいなかったら、どうなるでしょう。父の魂は子供の魂に結ばれているのです。
31 it will come about, when he sees the boy is not with us, he will die. Your servants will bring down the gray hair of your servant our father with sorrow to Sheol. (Sheol h7585)
この子供がわれわれと一緒にいないのを見たら、父は死ぬでしょう。そうすればしもべらは、あなたのしもべであるしらがの父を悲しんで陰府に下らせることになるでしょう。 (Sheol h7585)
32 For your servant became a guarantee for the boy to my father and said, 'If I do not bring him to you, then I will bear the guilt to my father forever.'
しもべは父にこの子供の身を請け合って『もしわたしがこの子をあなたのもとに連れ帰らなかったら、わたしは父に対して永久に罪を負いましょう』と言ったのです。
33 Now therefore, please let your servant stay instead of the boy as slave to my master, and let the boy go up with his brothers.
どうか、しもべをこの子供の代りに、わが主の奴隷としてとどまらせ、この子供を兄弟たちと一緒に上り行かせてください、
34 For how can I go up to my father if the boy is not with me? I am afraid to see the evil that would come on my father.”
この子供を連れずに、どうしてわたしは父のもとに上り行くことができましょう。父が災に会うのを見るに忍びません」。
