Genesis 44
1 Joseph commanded the steward of his house, saying, “Fill the men's sacks with food, as much as they can carry, and put every man's money in his sack's opening.
Et Joseph donna cet ordre à l'intendant de sa maison: Remplis les sacs de ces hommes de denrées, autant qu'ils en pourront emporter, et mets l'argent de chacun à l'entrée de son sac,
2 Put my cup, the silver cup, in the sack's opening of the youngest, and also his money for the grain.” The steward did as Joseph had said.
et ma coupe, la coupe d'argent, mets-la à l'entrée du sac du plus jeune ainsi que l'argent payé pour son blé. Et il exécuta l'ordre de Joseph tel qu'il le lui avait donné.
3 The morning dawned, and the men were sent away, they and their donkeys.
A l'aube du matin ces hommes furent congédiés, eux et leurs ânes.
4 When they were out of the city but were not yet far off, Joseph said to his steward, “Get up, follow after the men, and when you overtake them, say to them, 'Why have you returned evil for good?
Ils étaient sortis de la ville et n'étaient pas loin, quand Joseph dit à l'intendant de sa maison: Lève-toi, poursuis ces gens, et les ayant atteints dis-leur: Pourquoi avez-vous rendu le mal pour le bien?
5 Is this not the cup from which my master drinks, and the cup that he uses for divination? You have done evil, this thing that you have done.'”
N'est-ce pas ce dont mon seigneur se sert pour boire et pour tirer des présages? Ce que vous avez fait est mal.
6 The steward overtook them and spoke these words to them.
Et il les atteignit et il leur tint ce langage.
7 They said to him, “Why does my master speak such words as these? Far be it from your servants that they would do such a thing.
Et ils lui répondirent: Pourquoi? monseigneur tient-il ce langage? Il serait odieux pour tes serviteurs d'avoir agi de la sorte!
8 Look, the money that we found in our sacks' openings, we brought again to you out of the land of Canaan. How then could we steal out of your master's house silver or gold?
Voici, l'argent que nous avions trouvé à l'entrée de nos sacs, nous te l'avons rapporté du pays de Canaan; comment donc aurions-nous dérobé dans la maison de ton maître argent ou or?
9 With whomever of your servants it is found, let him die, and we also will be my master's slaves.”
Qu'il meure celui de tes serviteurs sur lequel l'objet se trouvera; et nous, nous serons les esclaves de notre seigneur.
10 The steward said, “Now also let it be according to your words. He with whom the cup is found will be my slave, and you others will be innocent.”
Et il dit: Eh bien! soit comme vous le dites: celui sur qui l'objet se trouvera, sera mon esclave, et vous, vous serez quittes.
11 Then each man hurried and brought his sack down to the ground, and each man opened his sack.
Alors ils se hâtèrent de décharger leurs sacs à terre, et chacun ouvrit son sac.
12 The steward searched. He began with the oldest and finished with the youngest, and the cup was found in Benjamin's sack.
Et il fouilla commençant par l'aîné, et finissant par le cadet, et la coupe se trouva dans le sac de Benjamin.
13 Then they tore their clothes. Each man loaded his donkey and returned to the city.
Alors ils déchirèrent leurs vêtements, et ils rechargèrent chacun son âne et regagnèrent la ville.
14 Judah and his brothers came to Joseph's house. He was still there, and they bowed before him to the ground.
Et Juda avec ses frères se rendit à la maison de Joseph, qui y était encore; et ils tombèrent devant lui la face contre terre.
15 Joseph said to them, “What is this that you have done? Do you not know that a man like me practices divination?”
Alors Joseph leur dit: Quelle est l'action que vous avez faite? Ne saviez-vous pas qu'un homme tel que moi, sait deviner?
16 Judah said, “What can we say to my master? What can we speak? Or how can we justify ourselves? God has found out the iniquity of your servants. Look, we are my master's slaves, both we and he also in whose hand the cup was found.”
Et Juda dit: Que dirons-nous à notre seigneur? quel langage employer, et comment nous justifier? Dieu a trouvé le crime de tes serviteurs: voici, nous sommes les esclaves de monseigneur, et nous et celui dans la main duquel la coupe s'est trouvée.
17 Joseph said, “Far be it from me that I should do so. The man in whose hand the cup was found, that person will be my slave, but as for you others, go up in peace to your father.”
Et il reprit: Loin de moi la pensée d'agir de la sorte! L'homme dans la main duquel la coupe s'est trouvée, sera, lui, mon esclave; mais vous, retournez en paix chez votre père.
18 Then Judah came near to him and said, “My master, please let your servant speak a word in my master's ears, and do let your anger burn against your servant, for you are just like Pharaoh.
Alors Juda s'avança vers lui et dit: Je t'en conjure, mon seigneur! que ton serviteur puisse dire une parole aux oreilles de mon seigneur, et que ta colère ne s'enflamme pas contre ton serviteur, car tu es l'égal de Pharaon!
19 My master asked his servants, saying, 'Do you have a father or a brother?'
Mon seigneur a adressé cette question à ses serviteurs: Avez-vous un père ou quelque frère?
20 We said to my master, 'We have a father, an old man, and a child of his old age, a little one. But his brother is dead, and he alone is left of his mother, and his father loves him.'
Et nous répondîmes à monseigneur: Nous avons un père âgé et un cadet, enfant de sa vieillesse, et son frère étant mort, il lui est resté seul de sa mère, et son père l'aime.
21 Then you said to your servants, 'Bring him down to me that I may see him.'
Et tu dis à tes serviteurs: Amenez-le moi, afin que je le voie de mes yeux.
22 After that, we said to my master, 'The boy cannot leave his father. For if he should leave his father his father would die.'
Et nous dîmes à monseigneur: Le jeune homme ne saurait quitter son père; s'il quitte son père, celui-ci mourra.
23 Then you said to your servants, 'Unless your youngest brother comes down with you, you will not see my face again.'
Et tu dis à tes serviteurs: Si votre frère cadet ne vient avec vous, vous ne serez plus admis en ma présence.
24 Then it came about when we went up to your servant my father, we told him the words of my master.
Et étant retournés auprès de ton serviteur, mon père, nous lui avons rapporté les paroles de monseigneur.
25 Our father said, 'Go again, buy us some food.'
Et notre père dit: Allez nous acheter encore un peu de blé.
26 Then we said, 'We cannot go down. If our youngest brother is with us, then will we go down, for we will not be able to see the man's face unless our youngest brother is with us.'
Et nous répondîmes: Il nous est impossible d'aller; si notre frère cadet nous accompagne, pour lors nous irons, car nous ne saurions être admis en présence de l'homme, si notre frère cadet n'est pas avec nous.
27 Your servant my father said to us, 'You know that my wife bore me two sons.
Et ton serviteur, notre père, nous dit: Vous savez que ma femme m'a enfanté deux fils.
28 One of them went out from me and I said, “Surely he is torn in pieces, and I have not seen him since.”
Et l'un a été séparé de moi, et je me dis: Certainement il a été dévoré, et je ne l'ai plus revu jusqu'à présent.
29 Now if you also take this one from me, and harm comes to him, you will bring down my gray hair with sorrow to Sheol.' (Sheol h7585)
Si vous m'enlevez encore celui-ci, et qu'il lui arrive malheur, vous ferez descendre douloureusement mes cheveux blancs aux Enfers. (Sheol h7585)
30 Now, therefore, when I come to your servant my father, and the lad is not with us, since his life is bound up in the boy's life,
Or si je reviens auprès de ton serviteur, mon père, sans avoir avec nous l'enfant à l'âme duquel son âme est attachée, quand il verra que l'enfant n'est pas avec nous,
31 it will come about, when he sees the boy is not with us, he will die. Your servants will bring down the gray hair of your servant our father with sorrow to Sheol. (Sheol h7585)
il mourra, et tes serviteurs auront fait descendre douloureusement les cheveux blancs de ton serviteur, notre père, aux Enfers. (Sheol h7585)
32 For your servant became a guarantee for the boy to my father and said, 'If I do not bring him to you, then I will bear the guilt to my father forever.'
Car ton serviteur a répondu du jeune homme à mon père: Si, lui ai-je dit, je ne te le ramène pas, je serai un coupable envers mon père toute ma vie.
33 Now therefore, please let your servant stay instead of the boy as slave to my master, and let the boy go up with his brothers.
Maintenant donc permets que ton serviteur demeure comme esclave de monseigneur à la place du jeune homme, et que le jeune homme retourne avec ses frères;
34 For how can I go up to my father if the boy is not with me? I am afraid to see the evil that would come on my father.”
car comment retournerais-je chez mon père sans avoir le jeune homme avec moi? Ah! fais que je n'aie pas à être témoin du chagrin qui affligerait mon père!
