< Genesis 4 >

1 The man slept with Eve his wife. She conceived and gave birth to Cain. She said, “I have produced a man with Yahweh's help.”
And Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and brought forth Cain and said, I have gained a man through God.
2 Then she gave birth to his brother Abel. Now Abel became a shepherd, but Cain cultivated the soil.
And she again bore his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.
3 It came about that in the course of time Cain brought some of the fruit of the ground as an offering to Yahweh.
And it was so after some time that Cain brought of the fruits of the earth a sacrifice to the Lord.
4 As for Abel, he brought some of the firstborn of his flock and some of the fat. Yahweh accepted Abel and his offering,
And Abel also brought of the first born of his sheep and of his fatlings, and God looked upon Abel and his gifts,
5 but Cain and his offering he did not accept. So Cain was very angry, and he scowled.
but Cain and his sacrifices he regarded not, and Cain was exceedingly sorrowful and his countenance fell.
6 Yahweh said to Cain, “Why are you angry and why are you scowling?
And the Lord God said to Cain, Why are you become very sorrowful and why is your countenance fallen?
7 If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin crouches at the door and desires to control you, but you must rule over it.”
Hast you not sinned if you have brought it rightly, but not rightly divided it? be still, to you shall be his submission, and you shall rule over him.
8 Cain spoke to Abel his brother. It came about that while they were in the fields, Cain rose up against Abel his brother and killed him.
And Cain said to Abel his brother, Let us go out into the plain; and it came to pass that when they were in the plain Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and killed him.
9 Then Yahweh said to Cain, “Where is Abel your brother?” He said, “I do not know. Am I my brother's keeper?”
And the Lord God said to Cain, Where is Abel your brother? and he said, I know not, am I my brother's keeper?
10 Yahweh said, “What have you done? Your brother's blood is calling out to me from the ground.
And the Lord said, What have you done? the voice of your brother's blood cries to me out of the ground.
11 Now cursed are you from the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother's blood from your hand.
And now you [are] cursed from the earth which has opened her mouth to receive your brother's blood from your hand.
12 When you cultivate the ground, from now on it will not yield to you its strength. A fugitive and a wanderer you will be in the earth.”
When you till the earth, then it shall not continue to give its strength to you: you shall be groaning and trembling on the earth.
13 Cain said to Yahweh, “My punishment is greater than I can bear.
And Cain said to the Lord God, My crime [is] too great for me to be forgiven.
14 Indeed, you have driven me out this day from this ground, and I will be hidden from your face. I will be a fugitive and a wanderer in the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me.”
If you cast me out this day from the face of the earth, and I shall be hidden from your presence, and I shall be groaning and trembling upon the earth, then it will be that any one that finds me shall kill me.
15 Yahweh said to him, “If anyone kills Cain, vengeance will be taken on him sevenfold.” Then Yahweh put a mark on Cain, so that if anyone found him, that person would not attack him.
And the Lord God said to him, Not so, any one that slays Cain shall suffer sevenfold vengeance; and the Lord God set a mark upon Cain that no one that found him might kill him.
16 So Cain went out from the presence of Yahweh and lived in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden.
So Cain went forth from the presence of God and lived in the land of Nod over against Edem.
17 Cain slept with his wife and she conceived. She gave birth to Enoch. He built a city and named it after his son Enoch.
And Cain knew his wife, and having conceived she bore Enoch; and he built a city; and he named the city after the name of his son, Enoch.
18 To Enoch was born Irad. Irad became the father of Mehujael. Mehujael became the father of Methushael. Methushael became the father of Lamech.
And to Enoch was born Gaidad; and Gaidad begot Maleleel; and Maleleel begot Mathusala; and Mathusala begot Lamech.
19 Lamech took for himself two wives. The name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other was Zillah.
And Lamech took to himself two wives; the name of the one was Ada, and the name of the second Sella.
20 Adah gave birth to Jabal. He was the father of those who lived in tents who have livestock.
And Ada bore Jobel; he was the father of those that dwell in tents, feeding cattle.
21 His brother's name was Jubal. He was the father of those who play the harp and pipe.
And the name of his brother was Jubal; he it was who invented the lute and harp.
22 As for Zillah, she bore Tubal-Cain, the forger of tools of bronze and iron. The sister of Tubal-Cain was Naamah.
And Sella also bore Thobel; he was a smith, a manufacturer both of brass and iron; and the sister of Thobel was Noema.
23 Lamech said to his wives, “Adah and Zillah, listen to my voice; you wives of Lamech, listen to what I say. For I have killed a man for wounding me, a young man for bruising me.
And Lamech said to his wives, Ada and Sella, Hear my voice, you wives of Lamech, consider my words, because I have slain a man to my sorrow and a youth to my grief.
24 If Cain is avenged seven times, then Lamech will be avenged seventy-seven times.”
Because vengeance has been exacted seven times on Cain's behalf, on Lamech's [it shall be] seventy times seven.
25 Adam slept with his wife again, and she bore another son. She called his name Seth and said, “God has given me another son in the place of Abel, for Cain killed him.”
And Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore a son, and called his name Seth, saying, For God has raised up to me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain killed.
26 A son was born to Seth and he called his name Enosh. At that time people began to call on the name of Yahweh.
And Seth had a son, and he called his name Enos: he hoped to call on the name of the Lord God.
