Genesis 30
1 When Rachel saw that she bore Jacob no children, Rachel envied her sister. She said to Jacob, “Give me children, or I will die.”
Et Rachel voyant qu'elle ne donnait point d'enfants à Jacob, elle fut jalouse de sa sœur, et elle dit à Jacob: Procure-moi des enfants! sinon, je meurs!
2 Jacob's anger burned against Rachel. He said, “Am I in the place of God, who has kept you from having children?”
Et Jacob s'irrita contre Rachel et dit: Ne suis-je pas aussi sous la dépendance de Dieu qui t'a refusé le fruit d'un sein fécond?
3 She said, “See, there is my servant Bilhah. Sleep with her, so she might give birth to children on my knees, and I will have children by her.”
Et elle dit: Voici ma servante Bilha, habite avec elle afin que je reçoive sur mes genoux ce qui naîtra d'elle, et que par elle moi aussi je me fasse une maison.
4 So she gave him her servant Bilhah as a wife, and Jacob slept with her.
Et elle lui donna Bilha, sa servante, pour femme, et Jacob habita avec elle.
5 Bilhah conceived and bore Jacob a son.
Et Bilha devint enceinte et enfanta à Jacob un fils.
6 Then Rachel said, “God has vindicated me, and he has heard my voice and given me a son.” For this reason she called his name Dan.
Alors Rachel dit: Dieu a été mon arbitre et a aussi écouté ma voix et m'a donné un fils. C'est pourquoi elle l'appela du nom de Dan (arbitre).
7 Bilhah, Rachel's servant, conceived again and bore Jacob a second son.
Et Bilha, servante de Rachel, devint encore enceinte et enfanta à Jacob un second fils.
8 Rachel said, “With mighty wrestlings have I wrestled with my sister and have prevailed.” She called his name Naphtali.
Alors Rachel dit: J'ai soutenu avec ma sœur des luttes de Dieu, et je l'ai emporté. Et elle l'appela du nom de Nephthali (ma lutte).
9 When Leah saw that she had stopped having children, she took Zilpah, her servant, and gave her to Jacob as a wife.
Et Léa, voyant qu'elle cessait d'avoir des enfants, prit Zilpa, sa servante, et la donna à Jacob pour femme.
10 Zilpah, Leah's servant, bore Jacob a son.
Et Zilpa, servante de Léa, enfanta à Jacob un fils.
11 Leah said, “This is fortunate!” so she called his name Gad.
Alors Léa dit: Avec bonheur! Et elle l'appela du nom de Gad (bonne étoile).
12 Then Zilpah, Leah's servant, bore Jacob a second son.
Et Zilpa, servante de Léa, enfanta à Jacob un second fils.
13 Leah said, “I am happy! For the daughters will call me happy.” So she called his name Asher.
Alors Léa dit: A ma félicité! Car les filles des hommes me féliciteront. Et elle l'appela du nom d'Asser (l'heureux).
14 Reuben went in the days of wheat harvest and found mandrakes in the field. He brought them to his mother Leah. Then Rachel said to Leah, “Give me some of your son's mandrakes.”
Et Ruben sortit au temps de la moisson des blés, et trouva des mandragores dans les champs, et il les apporta à Léa, sa mère. Alors Rachel dit à Léa: Donne-moi donc des mandragores de ton fils!
15 Leah said to her, “Is it a small matter to you, that you have taken away my husband? Do you now want to take away my son's mandrakes, too?” Rachel said, “Then he will sleep with you tonight, in exchange for your son's mandrakes.”
Et Léa lui répondit: Est-ce si peu de m'avoir pris mon mari, que tu veux aussi prendre les mandragores de mon fils? Et Rachel dit: Eh bien! il couchera avec toi cette nuit pour les mandragores de ton fils.
16 Jacob came from the field in the evening. Leah went out to meet him and said, “You must sleep with me tonight, for I have hired you with my son's mandrakes.” So Jacob slept with Leah that night.
Et comme Jacob revenait des champs le soir, Léa sortit à sa rencontre et lui dit: Tu t'approcheras de moi, car je t'ai retenu en cédant les mandragores de mon fils. Et il coucha avec elle cette nuit-là.
17 God listened to Leah, and she conceived and bore Jacob a fifth son.
Et Dieu exauça Léa, et elle devint enceinte, et enfanta à Jacob un cinquième fils.
18 Leah said, “God has given me my wages, because I gave my servant woman to my husband.” She called his name Issachar.
Alors Léa dit: Dieu ma donné mon salaire, pour avoir donné ma servante à mon mari. Et elle l'appela du nom de Issaschar (c'est le salaire).
19 Leah conceived again and bore a sixth son to Jacob.
Et Léa devint encore enceinte et enfanta à Jacob un sixième fils.
20 Leah said, “God has given me a good gift. Now my husband will honor me, because I have borne him six sons.” She called his name Zebulun.
Alors Léa dit: Dieu m'a fait un beau don; maintenant mon mari demeurera avec moi, puisque je lui ai enfanté six fils. Et elle l'appela du nom de Zabulon (demeure).
21 Afterwards she bore a daughter and called her name Dinah.
Et ensuite elle enfanta une fille et l'appela du nom de Dina.
22 God called Rachel to mind and listened to her. He caused her to become pregnant.
Et Dieu se souvint de Rachel et l'exauça et la rendit féconde.
23 She conceived and bore a son. She said, “God has taken away my shame.”
Et elle devint enceinte et enfanta un fils et dit: Dieu a enlevé mon opprobre.
24 She called his name Joseph, saying, “Yahweh has added to me another son.”
Et elle l'appela du nom de Joseph (il enlève) et dit: Que Dieu ajoute en ma faveur un autre fils!
25 After Rachel had borne Joseph, Jacob said to Laban, “Send me away, so that I may go to my own home and to my country.
Et lorsque Rachel eut enfanté Joseph, Jacob dit à Laban: Donne-moi mon congé, pour que je puisse m'en aller chez moi et dans mon pays.
26 Give me my wives and my children for whom I have served you, and let me go, for you know the service I have given you.”
Donne-moi mes femmes et mes enfants pour lesquels je t'ai servi, afin que je parte; car tu connais mon service que j'ai accompli pour toi.
27 Laban said to him, “If now I have found favor in your eyes, wait, because I have learned by using divination that Yahweh has blessed me for your sake.”
Laban lui dit: Ah! si j'avais trouvé grâce à tes yeux… J'avais bien auguré que l'Éternel me bénirait par ton moyen.
28 Then he said, “Name your wages, and I will pay them.”
Et il dit: Fixe le salaire que je te devrai, et je te le paierai.
29 Jacob said to him, “You know how I have served you, and how your livestock have fared with me.
Et [Jacob] lui dit: Tu sais comment je t'ai servi, et ce que ton troupeau est devenu avec moi.
30 For you had little before I came, and it has increased abundantly. Yahweh has blessed you wherever I worked. Now when will I provide for my own household also?”
Car ce que tu avais avant moi était peu de chose, et il y a eu accroissement considérable, et l'Éternel envoyait chez toi la bénédiction sur mes pas; et maintenant, quand travaillerai-je aussi pour ma maison?
31 So Laban said, “What will I pay you?” Jacob said, “You will not give me anything. If you will do this thing for me, I will again feed your flock and keep it.
Et [Laban] dit: Que dois-je te donner? Et Jacob répondit: Tu ne me donneras rien; mais si tu veux me traiter à ces conditions-ci, je reprendrai la conduite et la garde de tes brebis:
32 Let me walk through all your flock today, removing from it every speckled and spotted sheep, and every black one among the sheep, and the spotted and speckled among the goats. These will be my wages.
aujourd'hui je parcourrai tout ton troupeau, mettant à part parmi les brebis toutes les pièces marquetées et tachetées, et toutes les brunes, et parmi les chèvres toutes celles qui sont tachetées et marquetées; et ce sera là mon salaire.
33 My integrity will testify for me later on, when you come to check on my wages. Every one that is not speckled and spotted among the goats, and black among the sheep, if any are found with me, will be considered to be stolen.”
Et ma droiture répondra pour moi demain, quand tu en viendras à mon salaire: toutes les chèvres qui ne seront pas tachetées et marquetées, et toutes les brebis qui ne seront pas brunes, seront un vol chez moi.
34 Laban said, “Agreed. Let it be according to your word.”
Et Laban dit: Eh bien! qu'il en soit comme tu le dis.
35 That day Laban removed the male goats that were striped and spotted, and all the female goats that were speckled and spotted, every one that had white in it, and all the black ones among the sheep, and gave them into the hand of his sons.
Et le jour même il mit à part les boucs bigarrés et tachetés, et toutes les chèvres marquetées et tachetées, toutes celles où il y avait du blanc, et tout ce qu'il y avait de brebis noires, et il les remit aux soins de ses fils.
36 Laban also put three days' journey between himself and Jacob. So Jacob kept tending the rest of Laban's flocks.
Et il mit un espace de trois journées de marche entre lui et Jacob, et Jacob eut la conduite du reste du troupeau de Laban.
37 Jacob took fresh cut branches of fresh poplar, and of the almond and of the plane tree, and peeled white streaks in them, and made the white inner wood appear that was in the sticks.
Alors Jacob se pourvut de baguettes fraîches de peuplier blanc, d'amandier et d'érable, et il y pela des bandes blanches, en mettant à nu le blanc du bois.
38 Then he set the sticks that he had peeled in front of the flocks, in front of the watering troughs where they came to drink. They conceived when they came to drink.
Puis il plaça les verges qu'il avait ainsi écorcées, dans les auges, les abreuvoirs où les brebis venaient boire les unes vis-à-vis des autres. Et elles s'accouplaient lorsqu'elles venaient boire.
39 The flocks bred in front of the sticks; and the flocks produced striped, speckled, and spotted young.
Et les brebis s'accouplaient tournées vers les baguettes, et elles mettaient bas des portées bigarrées, tachetées et marquetées.
40 Jacob separated out these lambs, but made the rest of them face toward the striped animals and all the black sheep in the flock of Laban. Then he separated out his flocks for himself alone and did not put them together with Laban's flocks.
Et Jacob mettait à part les agneaux bigarrés, et il faisait que les brebis eussent en vue les bigarrées et toutes les brunes appartenant au troupeau de Laban, et il se formait des troupeaux séparés qu'il ne joignait point au troupeau de Laban.
41 Whenever the stronger sheep in the flock were breeding, then Jacob would lay the sticks in the watering troughs before the eyes of the flock, so that they might conceive among the sticks.
Et toutes les fois que les moutons vigoureux s'accouplaient, Jacob plaçait les verges devant les yeux des brebis dans les auges, pour que l'accouplement se fit en face des baguettes;
42 But when the feebler animals in the flock came, he did not put the sticks in front of them. So the feebler animals were Laban's, and the stronger were Jacob's.
mais quand les brebis étaient débiles, il ne les plaçait pas; et ainsi les débiles allaient à Laban et les vigoureuses à Jacob.
43 The man became very prosperous. He had large flocks, female servants and male servants, and camels and donkeys.
Et Jacob s'accrut de plus en plus, et il acquit un grand nombre de brebis et de servantes et de serviteurs et de chameaux et d'ânes.
