< Ezekiel 27 >

1 Again the word of Yahweh came to me, saying,
And the word of the Lord came to me saying,
2 “Now you, son of man, begin a lamentation concerning Tyre,
And you, son of man, take up a lamentation against Sor;
3 and say to Tyre, who lives within the gates of the sea, merchants of peoples to many islands, the Lord Yahweh says this to you: Tyre, you have said, 'I am perfect in beauty.'
and you shall say to Sor that dwells at the entrance of the sea, to the mart of the nations coming from many islands, Thus says the Lord to Sor; You have said, I have clothed myself with my beauty.
4 Your borders are in the heart of the seas; your builders have perfected your beauty.
In the heart of the sea your sons have put beauty upon you for Beelim.
5 They have made all your planks with cypress from Mount Hermon; they took cedar from Lebanon to make a mast for you.
Cedar in Senir was employed for you in building: boards of cypress timber were taken out of Libanus, and wood to make you masts of fir.
6 They made your oars from the oaks of Bashan; they made your decks out of cypress wood from Cyprus, and they overlaid them with ivory.
They made your oars [of wood] out of the land of Basan; your sacred utensils they made of ivory, your shady houses of wood from the isles of Chetiim.
7 Your sails were made from colorful linen from Egypt that served as your banner; the colors of blue and purple from the coasts of Elishah are used for the awning on your boat.
Fine linen with embroidery from Egypt supplied the couch, to put honor upon you, and to clothe you with blue and purple from the isles of Elisai; and they became your coverings.
8 Those who were living in Sidon and Arvad were your rowers; the sages of Tyre were within you; they were your pilots.
And your princes were the dwellers in Sidon, and the Aradians were your rowers: your wise men, O Sor, who were in you, these were your pilots.
9 Highly experienced craftsmen from Byblos filled your seams; all the ships of the sea and their sailors among you were carrying your merchandise for trade.

11 The men of Arvad and Helek in your army were on your walls surrounding you, and the people of Gammad were in your towers. They hung up their shields on your walls all around you! They completed your beauty.
The sons of the Aradians and your army were upon the walls; there were guards in your towers: they hung their quivers on your battlements round about; these completed your beauty.
12 Tarshish was a trading partner with you because of your abundant wealth of goods to sell: Silver, iron, tin, and lead. They bought and sold your wares!
The Carthaginians were your merchants because of the abundance of all your strength; they furnished your market with silver, and gold, and iron, and tin, and lead.
13 Javan, Tubal, and Meshech—they traded slaves and in items made of bronze. They handled your merchandise.
Greece, both the whole [world], and the adjacent coasts, these traded with you in the persons of men, and they gave [as] your merchandise vessels of brass.
14 Beth Togarmah provided horses, stallions, and mules as your merchandise.
Out of the house of Thogarma horses and horsemen furnished the market.
15 The men of Rhodes were your traders on many coasts. Merchandise was in your hand; they sent back horn, ivory, and ebony as tribute!
The sons of the Rhodians were your merchants; from the islands they multiplied your merchandise, [even] elephants' teeth: and to them that came in you did return your prices,
16 Aram was a dealer in your many products; they provided emeralds, purple, colored cloth, fine fabric, pearls, and rubies as your merchandise.
[even] men [as] your merchandise, from the multitude of your trading [population], myrrh and embroidered works from Tharsis: Ramoth also and Chorchor furnished your market.
17 Judah and the land of Israel were trading with you. They provided wheat from Minnith, cakes, honey, oil, and balsam as your merchandise.
Juda and the children of Israel, these were your merchants; in the sale of corn and ointments and cassia: and they gave the best honey, and oil, and resin, to your trading [population].
18 Damascus was a trader of all your products, of all your enormous wealth, and of the wine of Helbon and the wool of Zahar.
[The people of] Damascus were your merchants by reason of the abundance of all your power; wine out of Chelbon, and wool from Miletus; and they brought wine into your market.
19 Dan and Javan from Izal provided you with merchandise of wrought iron, cinnamon, and calamus. This became merchandise for you.
Out of Asel [came] wrought iron, and there is the sound of wheels among your trading [population].
20 Dedan was your dealer in fine saddle blankets.
[The people of] Daedan were your merchants, with choice cattle for chariots.
21 Arabia and all the chiefs of Kedar were traders with you; they provided you with lambs, rams and goats.
Arabia and all the princes of Kedar, these were your traders with you, [bringing] camels, and lambs, and rams, in which they trade with you.
22 The traders of Sheba and Raamah came to sell you the best of every spice and in all kinds of precious gems; they traded gold for your merchandise.

24 These were your dealers in ornate robes of violet cloths with woven colors, and in blankets of multicolored, embroidered, and well-woven cloth in your marketplaces.
bringing [for] merchandise blue, and choice stores bound with cords, and cypress wood.
25 The ships of Tarshish were the transporters of your merchandise! So you were filled up, heavily laden with cargo in the heart of the seas!
Ships were your merchants, in abundance, with your trading [population]: and you were filled and very heavily loaded in the heart of the sea.
26 Your rowers have brought you into vast seas; the eastern wind has broken you in the middle of them.
Your rowers have brought you into great waters: the south wind has broken you in the heart of the sea.
27 Your wealth, merchandise, and trade goods; your sailors and pilots, and ship builders; your traders of merchandise and all the men of war who are in you, and all your crew—they will sink into the depths of the sea on the day of your destruction.
Your forces, and your gain, and that of your traders, and your rowers, and your pilots, and your counselors, and they that traffic with you, and all your warriors that are in you: and all your company in the midst of you shall perish in the heart of the sea, in the day of your fall.
28 Cities at the sea will tremble at the sound of your pilots' cry;
At the cry of your voice your pilots shall be greatly terrified.
29 All those who handle oars will come down from their ships; mariners and all the pilots on the sea will stand on the land.
And all the rowers and the mariners shall come down from the ships, and the pilots of the sea shall stand on the land.
30 Then they will make you listen to their voice and will wail bitterly; they will cast dust up on their heads. They will roll about in ashes.
And they shall wail over you with their voice, and cry bitterly, and put earth on their heads, and spread ashes under them.
31 They will shave their heads bald for you and bind themselves with sackcloth, and they will weep bitterly over you and they will cry out.
32 They will lift up their wails of lamentation for you and sing dirges over you, Who is like Tyre, who has now been brought to silence in the middle of the sea?
And their sons shall take up a [lament] for you, even a lamentation for Sor, [saying],
33 When your merchandise went ashore from the sea, it satisfied many peoples; you enriched the kings of the earth with your great wealth and merchandise!
How large a reward have you gained from the sea? you have filled nations out of your abundance; and out of your mixed merchandise you have enriched all the kings of the earth.
34 But when you were shattered by the seas, by deep waters, your merchandise and all your crew sank!
Now are you broken in the sea, your traders are in the deep water, and all your company in the midst of you: all your rowers have fallen.
35 All the inhabitants of the coasts were appalled at you, and their kings shuddered in horror! Their faces trembled!
All the dwellers in the islands have mourned over you, and their kings have been utterly amazed, and their countenance has wept.
36 The merchants of the people hiss at you; you have become a horror, and you will be no more forever.”
Merchants from the nations have hissed at you; you are utterly destroyed, and shall not be any more for ever.
