< Exodus 20 >

1 God spoke all these words:
And God spake all these words saying: —
2 “I am Yahweh your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.
I, am Yahweh thy God, —who have brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of servants: —
3 You must have no other gods before me.
Thou shalt not have other gods besides me.
4 You must not make for yourself a carved figure nor the likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water below.
Thou shalt not make to thee an image, or any form, that is in the heavens above, —or that is in the earth beneath, —or that is in the waters beneath the earth:
5 You must not bow down to them or worship them, for I, Yahweh your God, am a jealous God. I punish the ancestors' wickedness by bringing punishment on the descendants, to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me.
thou shalt not bow thyself down to them nor be led to serve them—For, I, Yahweh, thy God, am a jealous GOD, visiting the iniquity of fathers upon sons, unto three [generations] and, unto four, of them that hate me;
6 But I show covenant faithfulness to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.
but shewing lovingkindness unto thousands [of generations], —of them who love me, and keep my commandments.
7 You must not take the name of Yahweh your God, in vain, for I will not hold guiltless anyone who takes my name in vain.
Thou shalt not utter the name of Yahweh thy God for falsehood, for Yahweh will not let him go unpunished who uttereth his name for falsehood.
8 Remember the Sabbath day, to set it apart to me.
Remember the sabbath day, to hallow it:
9 You must labor and do all your work for six days.
Six days, shalt thou labour, and do all thy work;
10 But the seventh day is a Sabbath for Yahweh your God. On it you must not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, or your male servant, or your female servant, or your cattle, or the foreigner who is within your gates.
but, the seventh day, is a sabbath unto Yahweh thy God, —thou shalt do no work, thou nor thy son nor thy daughter nor thy servant, nor thy handmaid, nor thy beast, nor thy sojourner who is within thy gates,
11 For in six days Yahweh made the heavens and earth, the sea, and everything that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore Yahweh blessed the Sabbath day and set it apart.
For, in six days, did Yahweh make the heavens and the earth, [and] the sea—and all that in them is, and rested on the seventh day, —for this cause, Yahweh blessed the sabbath day and hallowed it.
12 Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live a long time in the land that Yahweh your God is giving you.
Honour thy father, and thy mother, —that thy days may be prolonged upon the soil, which Yahweh thy God is about to give unto thee.
13 You must not murder anyone.
Thou shalt not commit murder.
14 You must not commit adultery.
Thou shalt not commit adultery.
15 You must not steal from anyone.
Thou shalt not steal.
16 You must not give false testimony against your neighbor.
Thou shalt not testify against thy neighbour, with a witness of falsehood.
17 You must not covet your neighbor's house; you must not covet your neighbor's wife, his male servant, his female servant, his ox, his donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.”
Thou shalt not covet, thy neighbour’s house, —thou shalt not covet, thy neighbour’s wife nor his servant nor his handmaid nor his ox, nor his ass, nor anything which belongeth unto thy neighbour.
18 All the people saw the thundering and the lightning, and heard the voice of the trumpet, and saw the mountain smoking. When the people saw it, they trembled and stood far off.
And, all the people, were witnessing the voices and the torches, and the sound of the horn, and the mountain smoking, —so then the people were struck with awe and shrank back, and stood afar off.
19 They said to Moses, “Speak to us, and we will listen; but do not let God speak to us, or we will die.”
And they said unto Moses, Speak, thou, with us, and we will hear, —but let not God speak with us lest we die.
20 Moses said to the people, “Do not be afraid, for God has come to test you so that the honor of him may be in you, and so that you do not sin.”
And Moses said unto the people—Do not fear, for to the end he may prove you, hath God come, —and to the end the reverence of him may be upon your faces that ye sin not.
21 So the people stood far off, and Moses approached the thick darkness where God was.
So then the people stood afar off, and, Moses, approached unto the thick gloom, where God was.
22 Yahweh said to Moses, “This is what you must tell the Israelites: 'You yourselves have seen that I have talked with you from heaven.
Then said Yahweh unto Moses, Thus, shalt thou say, unto the sons of Israel, —Ye yourselves, have seen that out of the heavens, have I spoken with you.
23 You will not make for yourselves other gods alongside me, gods of silver or gods of gold.
Ye shall not make [aught] beside me, —neither gods of silver, nor gods of gold, shall ye make to yourselves.
24 You must make an earthen altar for me, and you must sacrifice on it your burnt offerings, fellowship offerings, sheep, and oxen. In every place where I cause my name to be honored, I will come to you and bless you.
An altar of earth, shalt thou make to me, then shalt thou offer thereupon thine ascending-sacrifices and thy peace-offerings, thy sheep, and thine oxen. In every place where I may mention my name, will I come in unto thee and will bless thee.
25 If you make me an altar of stone, you must not build it of cut stones, for if you use your tools on it, you will have defiled it.
But if, an altar of stones, thou wilt make to me, thou shalt not build them hewn, —for as soon as thou hast lifted, thy sharp tool, thereupon, thou hast profaned it;
26 You must not go up to my altar on steps, so that your nakedness is not exposed.'”
neither shalt thou go up, by steps unto mine altar, —lest by any means thy shame be discovered thereupon.
