Daniel 2
1 In the second year of the reign of Nebuchadnezzar, he had dreams. His mind was troubled, and he could not sleep.
En la seconde année du règne de Nabuchodonosor, Nabuchodonosor vit un songe, et son esprit fut extrêmement effrayé; et son songe s’enfuit de lui.
2 Then the king summoned the magicians and those who claimed to speak with the dead. He also called the sorcerers and wise men. He wanted them to tell him about his dreams. So they came in and stood before the king.
Or le roi ordonna qu’on assemblât les devins, les mages et les enchanteurs, et les Chaldéens, afin qu’ils indiquassent au roi ses songes; ceux-ci, lorsqu’ils furent venus, se tinrent devant le roi.
3 The king said to them, “I have had a dream, and my mind is anxious to know what the dream means.”
Et le roi leur dit: J’ai vu un songe, et, troublé d’esprit, j’ignore ce que j’ai vu.
4 Then the wise men spoke to the king in Aramaic, “King, live forever! Tell the dream to us, your servants, and we will reveal the meaning.”
Et les Chaldéens répondirent au roi en syriaque: Roi, vivez à jamais; dites le songe à vos serviteurs, et nous en donnerons l’interprétation.
5 The king replied to the wise men, “This matter has been settled. If you do not reveal the dream to me and interpret it, your bodies will be torn apart and your houses made into rubbish heaps.
Et répondant, le roi dit aux Chaldéens: La chose m’est échappée de la mémoire, si vous ne m’indiquez le songe et sa signification, vous périrez, vous, et vos maisons seront confisquées.
6 But if you will tell me the dream and its meaning, you will receive gifts from me, a reward, and great honor. So tell to me the dream and its meaning.”
Mais si vous me dites le songe et sa signification, vous recevrez de moi des dons, des présents et de grands honneurs; dites-moi donc mon songe et son interprétation.
7 They replied again and said, “Let the king tell us, his servants, the dream and we will tell you its meaning.”
Ils lui répondirent pour la seconde fois, et ils dirent: Que le roi dise le songe à ses serviteurs, et nous lui en donnerons l’interprétation.
8 The king answered, “I know for certain that you want more time because you see how firm my decision is about this.
Le roi répondit et dit: Certainement, je reconnais que vous cherchez à gagner du temps, parce que vous savez que la chose m’est échappée de la mémoire.
9 But if you do not tell me the dream, there is only one sentence for you. You have decided to prepare false and deceptive words that you agreed together to say to me until I change my mind. So then, tell me the dream, and then I will know you can interpret it for me.”
Si donc vous ne m’indiquez pas le songe, je n’aurai qu’une opinion de vous, c’est que vous avez même préparé une interprétation fallacieuse et pleine de déception, afin de me la dire, jusqu’à ce que le temps se passe. C’est pourquoi dites-moi le songe, afin que je sache que vous donnerez aussi sa véritable interprétation.
10 The wise men replied to the king, “There is not a man on earth able to meet the king's demand. There is no great and powerful king who has demanded such a thing from any magician, or from anyone who claims to speak with the dead, or from a wise man.
Répondant donc, les Chaldéens dirent devant le roi: Il n’y a pas d’homme sur la terre qui puisse, ô roi, accomplir votre parole; et aucun roi, grand et puissant, ne fait de question de cette sorte à aucun devin, à aucun mage, à aucun Chaldéen.
11 What the king demands is difficult, and there is no one who can tell it to the king except the gods, and they do not live among humans.”
Car ce que vous demandez, ô roi, est difficile; et il ne se trouvera personne qui puisse l’indiquer en présence du roi, excepté les dieux, qui n’ont point de commerce avec les hommes,
12 This made the king angry and very furious, and he gave an order to destroy all those in Babylon who were known for their wisdom.
Ce qu’ayant entendu, le roi, en fureur, et dans une grande colère, ordonna que tous les sages de Babylone périraient.
13 So the decree went out that all those who were known for their wisdom were to be put to death. Because of this decree, they searched for Daniel and his friends so they could be put to death.
Et, la sentence promulguée, les sages étaient mis à mort; et l’on cherchait Daniel et ses compagnons, afin qu’ils périssent.
14 Then Daniel replied with prudence and discretion to Arioch the commander of the king's bodyguard, who had come to kill all those in Babylon who were known for their wisdom.
Alors Daniel s’informa de la loi et de la sentence auprès d’Arioch, prince de la milice du roi, qui était sorti pour faire mourir les sages de Babylone.
15 Daniel asked the king's commander, “Why is the king's decree so urgent?” So Arioch told Daniel what had happened.
Et il lui demanda à lui qui avait reçu pouvoir du roi, pour quel motif une si cruelle sentence était émanée du roi. Lors donc qu’Arioch eut indiqué la chose à Daniel,
16 Then Daniel went in and requested an appointment with the king so that he could present the interpretation to the king.
Daniel, étant entré, pria le roi de lui accorder quelque temps pour indiquer la solution au roi.
17 Then Daniel went to his house and explained to Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, what had happened.
Et, étant entré dans sa maison, il fit part de la chose à ses compagnons Ananias, Misaël et Azarias,
18 He urged them to seek mercy from the God of heaven concerning this mystery so that he and they might not be killed with the rest of the men of Babylon who were known for their wisdom.
Afin qu’ils implorassent la miséricorde de la face du Dieu du ciel, au sujet de ce secret, et que Daniel et ses compagnons ne périssent point avec les autres sages de Babylone.
19 That night the mystery was revealed to Daniel in a vision. Then Daniel praised the God of heaven
Alors le mystère fut découvert à Daniel dans une vision, durant la nuit; et Daniel bénit le Dieu du ciel,
20 and said, “Praise the name of God forever and ever; for wisdom and power belong to him.
Et ayant parlé, il dit: Que le nom du Seigneur soit béni d’un siècle jusqu’à un autre siècle, parce que la sagesse et la force sont à lui.
21 He changes the times and seasons; he removes kings and places kings on their thrones. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding.
Et c’est lui qui change les temps et les âges, qui transfère les royaumes et les établit, qui donne la sagesse aux sages et la science à ceux qui comprennent l’instruction.
22 He reveals the deep and hidden things because he knows what is in the darkness, and the light lives with him.
C’est lui qui révèle les choses profondes et cachées, qui connaît ce qui se trouve dans les ténèbres, et la lumière est avec lui.
23 God of my ancestors, I thank you and praise you for the wisdom and power you gave to me. Now you have made known to me what we asked of you, you have made known to us the matter that concerns the king.”
C’est vous, Dieu de nos pères, que je célèbre, c’est vous que je loue, parce que vous m’avez donné la sagesse et la force, et que vous m’avez montré maintenant ce que nous vous avons demandé, puisque vous nous avez révélé la parole du roi.
24 Then Daniel went in to see Arioch (the one the king appointed to kill everyone who was wise in Babylon). He went and said to him, “Do not kill the wise men in Babylon. Take me to the king and I will show the king the interpretation of his dream.”
Après cela, Daniel étant entré chez Arioch, que le roi avait établi pour perdre les sages de Babylone, il lui parla ainsi: Ne perdez point les sages de Babylone; introduisez-moi en présence du roi, et je donnerai la solution au roi.
25 Then Arioch quickly brought in Daniel before the king and said, “I have found among the exiles of Judah a man who will reveal the meaning of the king's dream.”
Alors Arioch, se hâtant, introduisit Daniel auprès du roi, et lui dit: J’ai trouvé un homme d’entre les fils de la transmigration de Juda, lequel donnera au roi la solution.
26 The king said to Daniel (who was called Belteshazzar), “Are you able to tell me the dream that I saw and its meaning?”
Le roi répondit, et dit à Daniel, dont le nom était Baltassar: Penses-tu que tu peux véritablement dire mon songe, et son interprétation?
27 Daniel answered the king and said, “The mystery that the king has asked about cannot be revealed by those who have wisdom, nor by those who claim to speak with the dead, nor by magicians, and not by astrologers.
Et répondant, Daniel dit devant le roi: Le mystère sur lequel le roi m’interroge, les sages, les mages, les devins et les augures ne peuvent le découvrir au roi.
28 Nevertheless, there is a God who lives in the heavens, who reveals mysteries, and he has made known to you, King Nebuchadnezzar, what will happen in the days to come. These were your dream and the visions of your mind as you lay on your bed.
Mais il est un Dieu dans le ciel qui révèle les mystères et qui vous a montré, roi Nabuchodonosor, les choses qui doivent arriver dans les derniers temps. Votre songe et les visions de votre tête dans votre lit sont de cette sorte:
29 As for you, king, your thoughts on your bed were about things to come, and the one who reveals mysteries has made known to you what is about to happen.
Vous, ô roi, vous avez commencé à penser dans votre lit ce qui devait arriver dans la suite, et celui qui révèle les mystères vous a montré les choses à venir,
30 As for me, this mystery was not revealed to me because of any wisdom that I have more than any other living person. This mystery was revealed to me so that you, king, may understand the meaning, and so that you may know the thoughts deep within you.
À moi aussi ce secret m’a été révélé, non par une sagesse qui est en moi plus qu’en tous les êtres vivants, mais afin que l’interprétation devînt manifeste pour le roi, et que vous connussiez les pensées de votre esprit.
31 King, you looked up and you saw a large statue. This statue, which was very powerful and bright, stood before you. Its brightness was terrifying.
Vous, ô roi, vous voyiez, et voilà comme une grande statue; et cette statue grande et considérable par la hauteur, se tenait debout devant vous et son regard était terrible.
32 The head of the statue was made of fine gold. Its breast and arms were of silver. Its middle and its thighs were made of bronze,
La tête de cette statue était d’or très pur; mais la poitrine et les bras d’argent; et le ventre et les cuisses d’airain;
33 and its legs were made of iron. Its feet were made partly of iron and partly of clay.
Mais les jambes de fer; une partie des pieds était de fer, mais l’autre d’argile.
34 You looked up, and a stone was cut out, although not by human hands, and it struck the statue on its feet of iron and clay, and it shattered them.
Vous voyiez ainsi, jusqu’à ce qu’une pierre fut détachée de la montagne sans les mains d’aucun homme, et elle frappa la statue dans ses pieds de fer, et d’argile, et elle les mit en pièces.
35 Then the iron, clay, bronze, silver, and gold at the same time were broken into pieces and became like the chaff of the threshing floors in the summer. The wind carried them away and there was no trace of them left. But the stone that struck the statue became a great mountain and filled the whole earth.
Alors furent brisés ensemble le fer, l’argile, l’airain, l’argent et l’or, et ils devinrent comme la cendre brûlante d’une aire d’été; et ils furent emportés par le vent; et il ne se trouva aucun lieu pour eux; mais la pierre qui avait frappé la statue devint une grande montagne et remplit toute la terre.
36 This was your dream. Now we will tell the king the meaning.
Voilà le songe; son interprétation, nous la dirons devant vous aussi, ô roi.
37 You, king, are king of the kings to whom the God of heaven has given the kingdom, the power, the strength, and the honor.
C’est vous qui êtes le roi des rois; et le Dieu du ciel vous a donné le royaume, et la force, et l’empire, et la gloire,
38 He has given into your hand the place where the human beings live. He has given over the animals of the fields and the birds of the heavens into your hand, and he has made you rule over them all. You are the statue's head of gold.
Et tous les lieux dans lesquels habitent les fils des hommes et les bêtes de la campagne; il a mis aussi les oiseaux du ciel en votre main, et sous votre puissance il a établi toutes choses; c’est donc vous qui êtes la tête d’or.
39 After you, another kingdom will arise that is inferior to you, and yet a third kingdom of bronze will rule over all the earth.
Et après vous s’élèvera un royaume moindre que vous, un royaume d’argent, puis un autre, un troisième royaume d’airain, qui commandera à toute la terre.
40 There will be a fourth kingdom, strong as iron, because iron breaks other things into pieces and shatters everything. It will shatter all these things and crush them.
Et le quatrième royaume sera comme le fer: de même que le fer brise et dompte toutes choses, de même il brisera et réduira en poudre tous ces autres royaumes.
41 Just as you saw, the feet and toes were partly made of baked clay and partly made of iron, so it will be a divided kingdom; some of the strength of iron will be in it, just as you saw iron mixed with the soft clay.
Mais parce que vous avez vu qu’une partie des pieds et des doigts des pieds était d’argile, et une partie de fer, le royaume sera divisé, quoiqu’il tirera son origine du fer, selon que vous avez vu le fer mêlé à l’argile fangeuse.
42 As the toes of the feet were partly made of iron and partly made of clay, so the kingdom will be partly strong and partly brittle.
Et comme vous avez vu les doigts des pieds, en partie de fer, et en partie d’argile fangeuse, le royaume sera en partie affermi, et en partie brisé.
43 As you saw the iron mixed with soft clay, so the people will be a mixture; they will not stay together, just as iron does not mix with clay.
Et, parce que vous avez vu le fer mêlé avec l’argile, ils se mêleront, il est vrai, par des alliances humaines; mais ils ne s’uniront pas, comme le fer ne peut se mêler avec l’argile.
44 In the days of those kings, the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that will never be destroyed, nor will it be conquered by another people. It will break the other kingdoms into pieces and put an end to all of them, and it will remain forever.
Mais dans les jours de ces royaumes, le Dieu du ciel suscitera un royaume qui jamais ne sera détruit, et son royaume ne sera pas donné à un autre peuple; or il mettra en pièces et consumera tous ces royaumes; et il subsistera lui-même éternellement.
45 Just as you saw, a stone was cut out of the mountain, but not by human hands. It broke the iron, bronze, clay, silver, and gold into pieces. The great God has made known to you, king, what will happen after this. The dream is true and this interpretation is reliable.”
Selon que vous avez vu qu’une pierre fut détachée de la montagne sans les mains d’aucun homme, et qu’elle mit en pièces l’argile et le fer, et l’airain et l’argent, et l’or, le grand Dieu a montré au roi les choses qui doivent arriver dans la suite; et véritable est le songe, et fidèle son interprétation.
46 King Nebuchadnezzar fell on his face before Daniel and honored him; he commanded that an offering be made and that incense be offered up to him.
Alors le roi Nabuchodonosor tomba sur sa face, et adora Daniel; et il ordonna qu’on lui offrît des hosties et de l’encens.
47 The king said to Daniel, “Truly your God is the God of gods, the Lord of kings, and the one who reveals mysteries, for you have been able to reveal this mystery.”
Parlant donc, le roi dit à Daniel: Véritablement votre Dieu est le Dieu des dieux, et le Seigneur des rois; et il révèle les mystères, puisque toi, tu as pu découvrir ce secret.
48 Then the king made Daniel highly honored and gave him many wonderful gifts. He made him ruler over the whole province of Babylon. Daniel became chief governor over the wisest men of Babylon.
Alors le roi éleva Daniel en honneur et lui fit de nombreux et de grands présents, et il l’établit prince sur toutes les provinces de Babylone, et chef des magistrats au-dessus de tous les sages de Babylone.
49 Daniel made a request of the king, and the king appointed Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego to be administrators over the province of Babylon. But Daniel remained at the king's court.
Or Daniel demanda au roi, et le roi préposa aux affaires de la province de Babylone, Sidrach, Misach et Abdénago; mais lui-même Daniel était à la porte du roi.
