Acts 26
1 So Agrippa said to Paul, “You may speak for yourself.” Then Paul stretched out his hand and made his defense.
Agrippa dit à Paul: « Tu peux parler en ton nom. » Alors Paul étendit la main, et prit sa défense.
2 “I regard myself as happy, King Agrippa, to make my case before you today against all the accusations of the Jews;
« Je m'estime heureux, roi Agrippa, d'avoir à me défendre aujourd'hui devant toi sur toutes les choses dont je suis accusé par les Juifs,
3 especially, because you are an expert in all the Jewish customs and questions. So I ask you to hear me patiently.
d'autant plus que tu es expert dans toutes les coutumes et dans toutes les questions qui se posent chez les Juifs. Je te prie donc de m'écouter avec patience.
4 Truly, all the Jews know how I lived from my youth in my own nation and at Jerusalem.
« En effet, tous les Juifs connaissent ma manière de vivre depuis ma jeunesse, qui a été dès le début parmi ma propre nation et à Jérusalem;
5 They knew me from the beginning and they should admit that I lived as a Pharisee, the strictest party of our religion.
m'ayant connu dès le début, s'ils veulent bien en témoigner, que selon la secte la plus stricte de notre religion j'ai vécu en pharisien.
6 Now I stand here to be judged because of my certain hope in the promise made by God to our fathers.
Maintenant, je me tiens ici pour être jugé à cause de l'espérance de la promesse faite par Dieu à nos pères,
7 For this is the promise that our twelve tribes sought to receive as they earnestly worshiped God night and day. It is for this certain hope, King Agrippa, that the Jews accuse me.
que nos douze tribus, servant avec ardeur nuit et jour, espèrent atteindre. C'est au sujet de cette espérance que je suis accusé par les Juifs, roi Agrippa!
8 Why should any of you think it is unbelievable that God raises the dead?
Pourquoi jugez-vous incroyable que Dieu ressuscite les morts?
9 Now indeed, I myself thought that I should do many things against the name of Jesus of Nazareth.
« Moi-même, j'ai très certainement pensé que je devais faire beaucoup de choses contraires au nom de Jésus de Nazareth.
10 I did these in Jerusalem. I locked up many of the saints in prison by the authority I received from the chief priests, and when they were killed, I cast my vote against them.
C'est aussi ce que j'ai fait à Jérusalem. J'ai fait enfermer dans des prisons un grand nombre de saints, ayant reçu l'autorité des principaux sacrificateurs; et quand on les mettait à mort, je votais contre eux.
11 I punished them many times in all the synagogues and I tried to force them to blaspheme. I was furiously enraged against them and I persecuted them even to foreign cities.
Les punissant souvent dans toutes les synagogues, je m'efforçais de les faire blasphémer. Étant extrêmement furieux contre eux, je les persécutais jusque dans les villes étrangères.
12 While I was doing this, I went to Damascus with authority and orders from the chief priests;
« Alors que je me rendais à Damas avec l'autorisation et la mission des chefs des prêtres,
13 and on the way there, at midday, King, I saw a light from heaven that was brighter than the sun and it shone around both me and the men who were traveling with me.
à midi, ô roi, je vis en chemin une lumière venant du ciel, plus brillante que le soleil, qui m'entourait ainsi que ceux qui voyageaient avec moi.
14 When we all fell to the ground, I heard a voice speaking to me that said in the Hebrew language, 'Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me? It is hard for you to kick a goad.'
Lorsque nous fûmes tous tombés à terre, j'entendis une voix qui me disait en hébreu: « Saul, Saul, pourquoi me persécutes-tu? Il t'est difficile de frapper contre les aiguillons ».
15 Then I said, 'Who are you, Lord?' The Lord replied, 'I am Jesus whom you persecute.
« J'ai dit: « Qui es-tu, Seigneur? Il dit: « Je suis Jésus, que vous persécutez.
16 Now get up and stand on your feet; because for this purpose I appeared to you, to appoint you to be a servant and a witness concerning the things that you know about me now and the things that I will show to you later;
Mais lève-toi et tiens-toi sur tes pieds, car c'est dans ce but que je te suis apparu, pour t'établir serviteur et témoin des choses que tu as vues et de celles que je te révélerai,
17 and I will rescue you from the people and from the Gentiles to whom I am sending you,
pour te délivrer du peuple et des païens vers lesquels je t'envoie,
18 to open their eyes and to turn them from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God, so that they may receive from God the forgiveness of sins and the inheritance that I give to them who are sanctified by faith in me.'
pour leur ouvrir les yeux, afin qu'ils passent des ténèbres à la lumière et de la puissance de Satan à Dieu, pour qu'ils reçoivent la rémission des péchés et un héritage parmi ceux qui sont sanctifiés par la foi en moi.
19 Therefore, King Agrippa, I did not disobey the heavenly vision;
« C'est pourquoi, roi Agrippa, je n'ai pas désobéi à la vision céleste,
20 but, to those in Damascus first, and then at Jerusalem, and throughout all the country of Judea, and also to the Gentiles, I gave them the message that that they should repent and turn to God, doing deeds worthy of repentance.
mais j'ai annoncé d'abord à ceux de Damas, à Jérusalem, dans tout le pays de Judée, et aussi aux païens, qu'ils devaient se repentir et se tourner vers Dieu, en faisant des œuvres dignes de la repentance.
21 For this cause the Jews arrested me in the temple and tried to kill me.
C'est pourquoi les Juifs se sont emparés de moi dans le temple et ont voulu me faire mourir.
22 God has helped me until now, so I stand and testify to the common people and to the great ones about nothing more than what the prophets and Moses said would happen—
Ayant donc obtenu le secours qui vient de Dieu, je me tiens jusqu'à ce jour pour rendre témoignage aux petits et aux grands, ne disant rien d'autre que ce que les prophètes et Moïse ont annoncé,
23 that Christ must suffer and that by being the first to rise from the dead, he would proclaim light to our own people and to the Gentiles.”
comment le Christ doit souffrir et comment, par la résurrection des morts, il sera le premier à annoncer la lumière à ce peuple et aux païens. »
24 As Paul completed his defense, Festus said with a loud voice, “Paul, you are insane; your great learning makes you insane.”
Comme il prenait ainsi sa défense, Festus dit d'une voix forte: « Paul, tu es fou! Ton grand savoir te rend fou! »
25 But Paul said, “I am not insane, most excellent Festus, but what I am declaring is true and rational.
Mais il répondit: « Je ne suis pas fou, très excellent Festus, mais je dis hardiment des paroles de vérité et de raison.
26 For the king knows about these things; and so, I speak freely to him, for I am persuaded that none of this is hidden from him; for this has not been done in a corner.
Car le roi est au courant de ces choses, et c'est à lui aussi que je parle librement. Car je suis persuadé qu'aucune de ces choses ne lui est cachée, puisque cela ne s'est pas fait dans un coin.
27 Do you believe the prophets, King Agrippa? I know that you believe.”
Roi Agrippa, crois-tu les prophètes? Je sais que tu crois. »
28 Agrippa said to Paul, “In a short time would you persuade me and make me a Christian?”
Agrippa dit à Paul: « Avec un peu de persuasion, essaies-tu de faire de moi un chrétien? »
29 Paul said, “I pray to God, that whether in a short or long time, not you only, but also all that hear me today, would be like me, but without these prison chains.”
Paul dit: « Je prie Dieu, afin que, soit avec peu, soit avec beaucoup, non seulement vous, mais aussi tous ceux qui m'écoutent aujourd'hui, deviennent tels que je suis, à l'exception de ces liens. »
30 Then the king stood up, and the governor, and Bernice also, and those who were sitting with them;
Le roi se leva avec le gouverneur et Bérénice, et ceux qui étaient assis avec eux.
31 when they left the hall, they talked to one another and said, “This man does nothing worthy of death or of bonds.”
Quand ils se furent retirés, ils se parlèrent entre eux, disant: « Cet homme ne fait rien qui mérite la mort ou la prison. »
32 Agrippa said to Festus, “This man could have been freed if he had not appealed to Caesar.”
Agrippa dit à Festus: « Cet homme aurait pu être libéré s'il n'avait pas fait appel à César. »
