< 2 Chronicles 17 >
1 Jehoshaphat son of Asa became king in his place. Jehoshaphat strengthened himself against Israel.
And Josaphat his son reigned in his stead, Josaphat strengthened himself against Israel.
2 He placed forces in all the fortified cities of Judah, and set garrisons in the land of Judah and in the cities of Ephraim, which Asa his father had captured.
And he put garrisons in all the strong cities of Juda, and appointed captains in all the cities of Juda, and in the cities of Ephraim, which Asa his father had taken.
3 Yahweh was with Jehoshaphat because he walked in the first ways of his father David, and did not seek the Baals.
And the Lord was with Josaphat, for he walked in the first ways of his father, and did not seek to idols;
4 Instead, he relied on the God of his father, and walked in his commandments, not after the behavior of Israel.
but he sought to the Lord God of his father, and walked in the commandments of his father, and not according to the works of Israel.
5 So Yahweh established the rule in his hand; all Judah brought tribute to Jehoshaphat. He had riches and honor in abundance.
And the Lord prospered the kingdom in his hand; and all Juda gave gifts to Josaphat; and he had great wealth and glory.
6 His heart was committed to Yahweh's ways. He also removed the high places and the Asherah poles from Judah.
And his heart was exalted in the way of the Lord; and he removed the high places and the groves from the land of Juda.
7 In the third year of his reign he sent his officials Ben-Hail, Obadiah, Zechariah, Nethanel, and Micaiah, to teach in the cities of Judah.
And in the third year of his reign, he sent his chief men, and his mighty men, Abdias and Zacharias, and Nathanael, and Michaias, to teach in the cities of Juda.
8 With them were Levites: Shemaiah, Nethaniah, Zebadiah, Asahel, Shemiramoth, Jehonathan, Adonijah, Tobijah, and Tob-Adonijah; and with them were the priests Elishama and Jehoram.
And with them [were] the Levites, Samaias, and Nathanias, and Zabdias, and Asiel, and Semiramoth, and Jonathan, and Adonias, and Tobias, and Tobadonias, Levites, and with them Elisama and Joram, the priests.
9 They taught in Judah, having the book of the law of Yahweh with them. They went about throughout all the cities of Judah and taught among the people.
And they taught in Juda, and [there was] with them the book of the law of the Lord, and they passed through the cities of Juda, and taught the people.
10 Terror of Yahweh fell on all the kingdoms of the lands that were around Judah, so that they made no war against Jehoshaphat.
And a terror of the Lord was upon all the kingdoms of the land round about Juda, and they made no war against Josaphat.
11 Some of the Philistines brought Jehoshaphat presents, and silver as tribute. Arabians also brought him flocks, 7,700 rams, and 7,700 goats.
And [some] of the Philistines brought to Josaphat gifts, and silver, and presents; and the Arabians brought him seven thousand seven hundred rams.
12 Jehoshaphat became very powerful. He built fortresses and store cities in Judah.
And Josaphat increased in greatness exceedingly, and built in Judea places of abode, and strong cities.
13 He had many supplies in the cities of Judah, and soldiers—strong, mighty men—in Jerusalem.
And he had many works in Judea: and the mighty men of war, [the men] of strength, [were] in Jerusalem.
14 These were their divisions listed by the name of their fathers' houses: From Judah, the commanders of thousands; Adnah the commander, and with him 300,000 fighting men;
And this [is] their number according to the houses of their fathers; even the captains of thousands in Juda [were], Ednas the chief, and with him mighty men of strength three hundred thousand.
15 next to him Jehohanan the commander, and with him 280,000 men;
And after him, Joanan the captain, and with him two hundred eighty thousand.
16 next to him Amasiah son of Zichri, who willingly offered to serve Yahweh; and with him 200,000 fighting men.
And after him Amasias the [son] of Zari, who was zealous for the Lord; and with him two hundred thousand mighty men of strength.
17 From Benjamin: Eliada a powerful man of courage, and with him 200,000 armed with bows and shields;
And out of Benjamin [there was] a mighty man of strength, even Eliada, and with him two hundred thousand archers and targeteers.
18 next to him Jehozabad, and with him 180,000 ready prepared for war.
And after him Jozabad, and with him a hundred and eighty thousand mighty men of war.
19 These were those who served the king, besides those whom the king put in the fortified cities throughout all Judah.
These were the king's servants besides those whom the king put in the strong cities in all Judea.
