1 Samuel 29

1 Now the Philistines gathered together all their army at Aphek; the Israelites camped by the spring that is in Jezreel.

Cependant, les Philistins concentrèrent toutes leurs forces vers Apha, et Israël campa à Endor en Jezraël.

2 The princes of the Philistines passed on by hundreds and by thousands; David and his men passed on in the rear guard with Achish.

Et les chefs des Philistins allaient en avant, par troupes de cent et de mille hommes; et David, suivi de ses gens, marchaient au dernier rang avec Achis.

3 Then the princes of the Philistines said, “What are these Hebrews doing here?” Achish said to the other princes of the Philistines, “Is not this David, the servant of Saul, the king of Israel, who has been with me these days, or rather these years, and I have found no fault with him since he came away to me to this day?”

Or, les chefs des Philistins dirent: Qui sont ceux-là qui nous suivent? Achis leur répondit: N'est-ce pas David le serviteur de Saül, roi d'Israël; voilà bien des jours qu'il est avec nous; la seconde année commence, et, depuis qu'il s'est attaché à moi, jusqu'à ce moment, je n'ai trouvé en lui rien à redire.

4 But the princes of the Philistines were angry with him and said, “Send the man back, that he may return to the place you assigned him. He will not go down with us into battle, for he will turn against us during the fighting. For how else could he make himself acceptable to his master than by taking the heads of our own men?

Les chefs des Philistins s'offensèrent de sa réponse, et ils lui dirent: Renvoie cet homme, qu'il s'en aille en la demeure où tu l'as établi; ne le laisse pas ici, et qu'il ne vienne point avec nous au combat; craignons qu'il ne nous trahisse. Comment se réconcilierait-il avec son maître, sinon avec les têtes de nos hommes?

5 Is this not David of whom they sang one to another in dances, saying, 'Saul has slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands'?”

N'est-ce pas ce David de qui l'on chantait, en dansant: Saül les a tués par milliers, David les a tués par myriades?

6 Then Achish called David and said to him, “As Yahweh lives, you have been good, and your going out and your coming in with me in the army is good in my view; for I have found nothing wrong with you since the day of your coming to me to this very day. Nevertheless, the princes are not favorable to you.

Achis fit donc appeler David, et il lui dit: Vive le Seigneur! tu es à mes yeux droit et bon; tu sors du camp et tu y rentres avec moi, et je n'ai découvert eu toi aucune méchanceté, depuis le jour où tu es venu me trouver, jusqu'à ce moment. Mais, aux yeux des chefs, tu n'es point bon.

7 So now return and go in peace, so that you do not displease the princes of the Philistines.”

Ainsi, retire-toi; pars en paix; c'est le moyen de ne rien faire qui semble mal aux chefs des Philistins.

8 David said to Achish, “But what have I done? What have you found in your servant as long as I have been before you to this day, that I may not go and fight against the enemies of my master the king?”

Et David dit à Achis: Que t'ai-je fait, et qu'as-tu à reprocher à ton serviteur, depuis le jour où je suis arrivé devant toi, jusqu'à ce moment, pour que l'on me défende de combattre les ennemis du roi mon maître?

9 Achish answered and said to David, “I know that you are as blameless in my sight as an angel of God; nevertheless, the princes of the Philistines have said, 'He must not go up with us to the battle.'

Achis répondit à David: A mes yeux, tu es bon; mais les chefs des Philistins ont dit: Il ne viendra pas au combat avec nous.

10 So now rise up early in the morning with the servants of your master who have come with you; as soon as you are up early in the morning and have light, go away.”

Lève-toi donc demain de grand matin, emmène tes serviteurs; retournez au lieu où je vous ai établis, et ne laisse point entrer en ton cœur de mauvaise pensée, parce que, selon moi, tu es bon. Levez-vous pour vous mettre en route avant qu'il fasse jours et partez.

11 So David rose up early, he and his men, to leave in the morning, to return into the land of the Philistines. But the Philistines went up to Jezreel.

Et David avec ses gens se leva de grand matin; ils partirent pour garder la terre des Philistins, et ceux-ci allèrent à Jezraël pour livrer bataille.
