1 Samuel 16

1 Yahweh said to Samuel, “How long will you mourn for Saul, since I have rejected him from being king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil and go. I will send you to Jesse of Bethlehem, for I have selected for myself a king among his sons.”

Da sprach der Herr zu Samuel: "Wie lange willst du um Saul trauern? Ich habe ihn verworfen, daß er nicht mehr König über Israel sei. Fülle dein Horn mit Öl und geh! Ich sende dich zu dem Bethlehemiten Isai. Denn unter seinen Söhnen habe ich mir einen zum König ersehen."

2 Samuel said, “How can I go? If Saul hears of it, he will kill me.” Yahweh said, “Take a heifer with you and say, 'I have come to sacrifice to Yahweh.'

Da sprach Samuel: "Wie kann ich gehen? Hört es Saul, dann bringt er mich um." Da sprach der Herr: "Nimm eine junge Kuh zur Hand und sprich: 'Dem Herrn zu opfern, komme ich.'

3 Call Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you will do. You will anoint for me the one whom I tell you.”

Lade zum Opfer Isai ein! Dann lasse ich dich wissen, was du ihm tun sollst. Salbe mir den, den ich dir nenne!"

4 Samuel did as Yahweh said and went to Bethlehem. The elders of the city were trembling as they came to meet him and said, “Are you coming in peace?”

Und Samuel tat, wie ihm der Herr gesagt, und kam nach Bethlehem. Da eilten ihm die Ältesten der Stadt entgegen und sprachen: "Bringt dein Kommen Heil?"

5 He said, “In peace; I have come to sacrifice to Yahweh. Prepare to set yourselves apart and come with me to the sacrifice.” Then he set apart Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice.

Er sprach: "Heil! Ich komme, dem Herrn zu opfern. Heiligt euch und kommt mit mir zum Opfer!" Dann hieß er auch Isai und seine Söhne sich heiligen und lud sie zum Opfer.

6 When they came, he looked at Eliab and said to himself that Yahweh's anointed was certainly standing before him.

Als sie kamen, sah er Eliab und sprach: "Wie der Herr, so sein Gesalbter."

7 But Yahweh said to Samuel, “Do not look at his outward appearance, or on the height of his stature; because I have rejected him. For Yahweh does not see as man sees; man looks on the outward appearance, but Yahweh looks on the heart.”

Da sprach der Herr zu Samuel: "Sieh nicht auf sein Aussehen und seinen hohen Wuchs! Denn ich verschmähe ihn, sieht doch kein Mensch auf den Grund. Der Mensch schaut auf das Äußere, der Herr aber schaut auf das Herz."

8 Then Jesse called Abinadab and made him pass before Samuel. Then Samuel said, “Neither has Yahweh chosen this one.”

Da rief Isai den Abinadab und führte ihn Samuel vor. Er aber sprach: "Auch diesen hat der Herr nicht erkoren."

9 Jesse then made Shammah pass by, but Samuel said, “Neither has Yahweh chosen this one.”

Dann führte Isai den Samma vor. Er aber sprach: "Auch diesen hat der Herr nicht erkoren."

10 Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel. Then Samuel said to Jesse, “Yahweh has not chosen any of these.”

So führte Isai seine sieben Söhne vor Samuel. Aber Samuel sprach zu Isai: "Der Herr hat diese nicht erkoren."

11 Then Samuel said to Jesse, “Are all of your sons here?” He replied, “There remains yet the youngest, but he is tending the sheep.” Samuel said to Jesse, “Send and get him; for we will not sit down until he comes here.”

Dann fragte Samuel den Isai: "Sind das die Jünglinge alle? Er sprach: "Noch ist der Jüngste übrig. Dieser hütet eben die Schafe." Da sprach Samuel zu Isai: "Schick hin und laß ihn holen! Denn wir setzen uns nicht zu Tisch, bis er herkommt."

12 Jesse sent and brought him in. Now this son was ruddy and had beautiful eyes and a handsome appearance. Yahweh said, “Arise, anoint him; for he is the one.”

Da schickte er hin und ließ ihn kommen. Er aber war blond; zugleich hatte er schöne Augen und war wohlgebildet. Da sprach der Herr: "Auf! Salbe ihn! Dieser ist es."

13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the middle of his brothers. The Spirit of Yahweh rushed on David from that day forward. Then Samuel rose up and went to Ramah.

Da nahm Samuel das Ölhorn und salbte ihn inmitten seiner Brüder. Da kam des Herrn Geist auf David von dem Tag an und weiterhin. Samuel aber brach auf und ging auf die Rama.

14 Now the Spirit of Yahweh left Saul, and a harmful spirit from Yahweh troubled him instead.

Des Herrn Geist aber wich von Saul. Ihn verstörte ein böser Geist vom Herrn.

15 Saul's servants said to him, “Look, a harmful spirit from God troubles you.

Da sprachen Sauls Diener zu ihm: "Dich verstört ein böser Gottesgeist.

16 Let our master now command your servants who are before you to look for a man who is a skillful player on the harp. Then when the harmful spirit from God is on you, he will play it and you will be well.”

Unser Herr spreche nur! Deine Diener sind dir zu Willen. Sie suchen einen Mann, der die Zither zu spielen versteht. Sooft ein böser Gottesgeist über dich kommt, spiele er, daß dir besser werde!"

17 Saul said to his servants, “Find me a man that can play well and bring him to me.”

Da sprach Saul zu seinen Dienern: "Erkundet für mich einen Mann, der gut zu spielen weiß, und bringt ihn mir!"

18 Then one of the young men answered, and said, “I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, who is skillful in playing, a strong, courageous man, a man of war, one prudent in speech, a handsome man; and Yahweh is with him.”

Da hob einer der Diener an und sprach: "Ich habe einen Sohn des Bethlehemiten Isai gesehen. Er ist des Saitenspiels kundig und ein tüchtiger Krieger, kampferprobt, dazu des Wortes mächtig und ein Mann von Wuchs. Dazu ist der Herr mit ihm."

19 So Saul sent messengers to Jesse, and said, “Send me your son David, who is with the sheep.”

Da sandte Saul Boten an Isai und ließ sagen: "Schick mir deinen Sohn David, der bei den Schafen weilt!"

20 Jesse took a donkey loaded with bread, a container of wine, and a young goat, and sent them with his son David to Saul.

Da nahm Isai einen Scheffel Brot, einen Schlauch Wein und ein Ziegenböckchen und sandte es durch seinen Sohn David an Saul.

21 Then David came to Saul and entered his service. Saul loved him greatly, and he became his armor bearer.

So kam David zu Saul und trat in seinen Dienst. Er gewann ihn sehr lieb, und so ward er sein Waffenträger.

22 Saul sent to Jesse, saying, “Let David stand before me, for he has found favor in my eyes.”

Da schickte Saul zu Isai und ließ sagen: "Laß David in meine Dienste treten! Denn er gefällt mir."

23 Whenever the harmful spirit from God was upon Saul, David took the harp and played it. So Saul would be refreshed and well, and the harmful spirit would depart from him.

Sooft nun der Gottesgeist über Saul kam, nahm David die Zither und spielte mit seiner Hand. Da ward es Saul leichter und besser, wich doch der böse Geist von ihm.
