1 Samuel 11
1 Then Nahash the Ammonite went and laid seige to Jabesh Gilead. All the men of Jabesh said to Nahash, “Make a covenant with us, and we will serve you.”
Environ un mois plus tard, Naas l'Ammonite, s'étant mis en marche, campa vers Jabès-Galaad. Tous les hommes de Jabès-Galaad lui dirent alors: Fais avec nous alliance, et nous te servirons.
2 Nahash the Ammonite replied, “On this condition will I make a treaty with you, that I gouge out all of your right eyes, and in this way bring disgrace on all Israel.”
Mais Naas l'Ammonite leur dit: Je ferai alliance avec vous, à la condition de vous arracher à tous l'œil droit, et j'imposerai un opprobre à Israël.
3 Then the elders of Jabesh replied to him, “Leave us alone for seven days, so that we may send messengers to all the territory of Israel. Then, if there is no one to save us, we will surrender to you.”
Les hommes de Jabès lui dirent: Accorde-nous sept jours; nous dépêcherons des envoyés sur tout le territoire d'Israël, et, si personne ne vient nous sauver, nous nous rendrons à toi.
4 The messengers came to Gibeah, where Saul lived, and told the people what had happened. All the people wept loudly.
Et les messagers allèrent trouver Saül en Gabaa; ils répétèrent au peuple ces discours, et tout le peuple, élevant la voix, se prit à pleurer.
5 Now Saul was following the oxen out of the field. Saul said, “What is wrong with the people that they are weeping?” They told Saul what the men of Jabesh had said.
Or, Saül à ce moment revenait des champs, après le matin, et il dit: Pourquoi le peuple pleure-t-il? On lui rapporta les paroles des hommes de Jabès.
6 When Saul heard what they said, the Spirit of God rushed upon him, and he was very angry.
Lorsque Saül les eut entendues, l'Esprit du Seigneur s'élança sur lui, et, en son cœur, il se courrouça vivement contre l'Ammonite.
7 He took a yoke of oxen, cut them into pieces, and sent them throughout all the territory of Israel with the messengers. He said, “Whoever does not come out after Saul and after Samuel, this is what will be done to his oxen.” Then the terror of Yahweh fell on the people, and they came out together as one man.
Il prit deux vaches, et il les dépeça, et il envoya leurs membres sur tout le territoire d'Israël, par la main de messagers, disant: C'est ainsi que seront traités ceux qui ne marcheront pas avec Saül et avec Samuel. Un transport suscité par le Seigneur vint au peuple d'Israël, et il cria comme un seul homme.
8 When he mustered them at Bezek, the people of Israel were three hundred thousand, and the men of Judah thirty thousand.
Et Saül les passa en revue à Bésech en Bama; il y avait d'Israël six cent mille hommes, et de Juda soixante-dix mille.
9 They said to the messengers that came, “You will tell the men of Jabesh Gilead, 'Tomorrow, by the time the sun is hot, you will be rescued.'” So the messengers went and told the men of Jabesh, and they were glad.
Il dit alors aux messagers, qui étaient revenus: Portez ces paroles aux hommes de Jabès: A demain votre salut, au moment de la grande chaleur du soleil. Les messagers retournèrent à la ville, et racontèrent tout aux hommes de Jabès; ceux-ci en furent remplis de joie.
10 Then the men of Jabesh said to Nahash, “Tomorrow we will surrender to you, and you can do to us whatever seems good to you.”
Les hommes de Jabès dirent alors à Naas l'Ammonite: Demain, nous nous rendrons à vous, et vous nous traiterez comme bon vous semblera.
11 The next day Saul put the people in three groups. They came into the middle of the camp during the morning watch, and they attacked and defeated the Ammonites until the heat of the day. Those who survived were scattered, so that no two of them were left together.
Le lendemain, Saül divisa le peuple en trois corps; ils entrèrent dans le camp ennemi pendant la garde de l'aurore, et ils frappèrent les fils d'Ammon jusqu'à ce que le jour s'échauffât. Les survivants se dispersèrent, et il n'en resta pas deux ensemble.
12 Then the people said to Samuel, “Who was it who said, 'Will Saul reign over us?' Bring the men, so we can put them to death.”
Et le peuple dit à Samuel: Qui donc prétendait que Saül ne règnerait pas sur nous? Livre-nous-les ces hommes, et nous les mettrons à mort.
13 But Saul said, “No one must be put to death this day, because today Yahweh has rescued Israel.”
Mais Saül dit: Personne ne mourra en un jour où le Seigneur a sauvé Israël.
14 Then Samuel said to the people, “Come, let us go to Gilgal and renew the monarchy there.”
Et Samuel dit au peuple: Allons à Galgala; nous inaugurerons en cette ville la royauté nouvelle.
15 So all the people went to Gilgal and made Saul king before Yahweh in Gilgal. There they sacrificed peace offerings before Yahweh, and Saul and all the men of Israel rejoiced greatly.
Tout le peuple se rendit à Galgala, et là, devant le Seigneur, Samuel sacra Saül comme roi; il y fit au Seigneur des sacrifices, et il y offrit des hosties pacifiques. Et Samuel et le peuple se réjouirent extrêmement.
